University of Massachusetts Dartmouth - Charlton College of Business

Introduction

The Charlton College of Business strives to create future business leaders and good citizens for the region and beyond, through providing business education that emphasizes an excellent general education, the application of business concepts to practice, integrity and work ethic, and creates an understanding of the global business environment, diversity and the changing workplace culture.

Earle Perry Charlton, the man for whom the college was named established himself as one of the giants in the annals of chain-retailing industry. He built his company the E.P. Charlton & Co. 5 & 10 Cent Stores from one store in Fall River, Massachusetts opened in 1890 to 53 stores spread across the United States and Canada. By the time of his death in 1930 he had amassed a personal fortune valued at $32 million. He was a visionary, a problem solver, a philanthropist, and above all an honest merchant. He wrote in an article entitled "Mass Selling, an Important Influence," published in the Boston Transcript in 1929, "That mercantile business would be impossible without...public confidence."

In today's business environment where public confidence in our business leaders has been shaken by a variety of scandals, the Charlton College of Business (CCB) is proud of its tradition of developing solid and ethical business leaders. Our faculty rely on their passion for teaching, draw inspiration from their research, and translate experiences gained from working in the real world to prepare our students for global and ethical leadership. Our alumni do indeed span the globe!

On October 1, 2004 the College of Business moved into a new ultramodern building built with a $3 million grant from the Earle P. Charlton Family Trust. When I accepted the Dean's position in August of 2004, I was excited about the move to the new building and mindful of the unrealized potential that exists in south coast Massachusetts. We are the only public university in the entire region and the only AACSB International accredited public business college in south coast Massachusetts. It is my hope that the Charlton College of Business can, in the years to come, continue to emulate the principled leadership of Earle P. Charlton and can educate students to have similar characteristics.

Our programs include award-winning Center for Marketing Research, AACSB International accredited management, marketing, business information systems, accounting, and finance undergraduate and MBA programs. Our International Business Certificate program provides a unique opportunity for our students to travel overseas to learn the best global business practices.

With the combination of a beautiful new facility, new leadership and a cadre of engaged and seasoned faculty and staff the Charlton College of Business is poised to advance business education in this region. Our best days are truly ahead of us!
