Life at USF

The University of San Francisco campus sits in the heart of San Francisco in a hilly, residential neighborhood that is just 5 km from downtown San Francisco. Near by USF are neighborhoods filled with cafes, restaurants and shops, and Golden Gate Park (4.8 km x .8 km) with its museums, botanical gardens, windmills, forests, meadows and beach.

With over 100 clubs and organizations, ranging from community service to art exhibits, film series, professional organizations and graduate student associations, there are countless activities for students.

All students have access to the award-winning Koret Health and Recreation Center which has everything you need to keep fit — from cardio and weight equipment, to fitness classes, to volleyball, basketball and an Olympic-size pool. The Koret center also sponsors intramural and club sports, and organizes the Outdoor Adventures programs that offers everything from skiing to sea kayaking to deep sea fishing.

Founded in 1986, the MFA program is designed to instruct writers in creative techniques, to nurture their individual development and vision, and to help them thrive in the larger community of writers.The two-and-a-half year MFA program offers workshops and literature seminars in the genres of fiction, poetry, and nonfiction. The distinctive design of the program emphasizes the connection between reading and the students’ own writing and fosters collegial relationships among faculty and students in small classes. With more than 230 million global citizens living outside their home countries, international migration is one of the most critical issues facing the global community in the 21st century. The challenges that these global citizens face are the focus of this Master’s program, which prepares professionals to better the lives of migrants and refugees throughout the world. Students study topics of global migration with top researchers, professors, project practitioners, and policy makers in the field of migration studies. The program includes one semester of studies at Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City. Graduates are prepared for careers in local, state and national governmental agencies; policy think tanks and policy and planning consulting firms; community-based non profits and non-governmental organizations; international agencies; advocacy and public interest organizations; philanthropic organizations and foundations; and other private-sector entities. Located in the heart of San Francisco and close to Silicon Valley — one of the most vibrant and innovative regions in the world — MAPC students have access to collegial and professional networks at Bay Area organizations and companies. The program’s convenient schedule of evening courses appeals to full-time graduate students and enables professionals to work while completing their degree. The MAPC includes courses that meet both on-campus and online for flexibility and convenience, while providing engagement with cutting-edge technology. In the second year, some courses are offered entirely online. With three concentrations from which to choose, the program creates a community of professional communicators who have varied career interests.
