Introduction

This Faculty's courses are grouped into three, nationally determined, subject areas: Accounting; Business and Management; and Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure. The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) has awarded the Faculty an 'excellent' rating (with a perfect score of 24 out of 24) in Business and Management, the subject area covering the majority of the Faculty's course provision. Similarly, the Faculty received an 'excellent' rating for Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure. In November 2003, the QAA's Developmental Engagement confirmed an equivalent rating for the subject area of Accounting.

Consequently, in terms of teaching, the Faculty can confidently assert, on an objective basis, that it is the leading quality benchmarked centre for business education in Ireland, placing it amongst the very best in the wider British Isles context. In terms of objective, quality-benchmarked research criteria, the 2001 Business and Management Research Assessment Exercise ranks the University of Ulster's contribution in this area at a 3A, indicating that over 75% of its research is of national excellence.

Such thinking will be developed at conceptual and practical levels for both recent marketing graduates and graduates from other disciplines that can demonstrate an appropriate interest and/or competence in agri-food business. The programme is especially relevant for those managers already working in the agri-food industry at home and abroad who have a specific interest in marketing, innovation and entrepreneurship. The development of knowledge, intellectual qualities, professional and transferable skills, coupled with a pervasive international perspective on strategic marketing and innovation issues, will equip participants for middle management and senior appointments throughout the agri-food supply chain at home and abroad. The programme has been developed in conjunction with senior managers and key policy decision-makers from Northern Ireland (NI) and the United States (USA) agri-food business sectors, as well as leading marketing and entrepreneurship academics from around the world. The Programme     Entrepreneurship is concerned with creating economic or social value in the context of any type of organisation. Value is created through identifying opportunities and exploiting those opportunities through systematic innovation.     The Innovation and Entrepreneurship programme has been designed for managers who are driven to be champions of change and need a creative learning experience to realise their potential. It draws on the expertise of leading exponents of management development from the University of Ulster and Babson College- judged the number one university for entrepreneurship education in the USA.     The course may be available at other locations on the basis of demand.     Duration and Mode of Attendance   The Postgraduate Diploma begins in January each year and comprises eight core modules delivered over an eighteen-month period. One module is delivered in Babson College.     The Masters degree comprises the Diploma and an additional dissertation project completed over a six-month period.     Overall the full programme can be completed in two years.       Entry Conditions     Managers should normally have a degree in any discipline or an equivalent accounting/professional qualification, and have at least three years work experience. They should also be in a position to influence business development through organisational change, market opportunities or technological exploitation.     Managers who do not meet these requirements but have exceptional determination, experience and/or alternative qualifications are welcome to discuss their needs with the programme director.       Structure and Content     The programme consists of eight modules in the following fields: strategy, creativity, innovation, entrepreneurship, organisations, competitiveness, enterprise and marketing.
