Introduction

Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), founded in 1898, was the first institution in the world dedicated to research and teaching in the field of tropical medicine.

As a registered charity, we work across the world, often in very difficult circumstances, to fulfil our mission of reducing the burden of sickness and mortality in disease endemic countries. We do that through the delivery of effective interventions which improve human health and are relevant to the poorest communities.

Our work in combating diseases such as TB, HIV/AIDS, malaria, dengue and lymphatic filariasis is supported by a research order book of well over £210 million.

Our worldwide reputation and the calibre of our research outputs has secured funding to lead over 10 international consortia and product development partnerships aimed at reducing or eliminating the impact of diseases upon the world's poorest people.

Our state-of-the-art facilities continue to develop new drugs, vaccines and pesticides which put us at the forefront of infectious disease research.

As a teaching institution, we attract more than 600 students from 68 countries, from PhD research and Masters programmes to a range of professional courses, and work in partnership with health ministries, universities and research institutions worldwide to train the next generation of doctors, scientists, researchers and health professionals.

The provision of technical assistance is a major component of LSTM's mission of promoting the improved health of the poor and disadvantaged peoples. LSTM consultancy improves health systems in developing countries whilst helping to inform our teaching and research agendas.

We also provide pre- and post travel clinical services through our subsidiary Well Travelled Clinics Ltd (link is external), with centres in Liverpool and Chester.

Master Biology and Control of Parasites and Disease Vectors

This programme provides advanced contemporary training in parasitology and the study of disease vectors. The broad scope of the programme ranges from the biology, immunology, ecology and population biology of the organisms to public health and disease epidemiology. In addition to providing a solid foundation in parasite and vector biology, the programme provides practical experience of essential techniques, as well as significant theoretical and practical knowledge in all important and topical areas of the field, all taught within an active and exciting scientific environment. This programme provides advanced contemporary training in parasitology and the study of disease vectors. The broad scope of the programme ranges from the biology, immunology, ecology and population biology of the organisms to public health and disease epidemiology. In addition to providing a solid foundation in parasite and vector biology, the programme provides practical experience of essential techniques, as well as significant theoretical and practical knowledge in all important and topical areas of the field, all taught within an active and exciting scientific environment. Home fee: £8,100 (for 2015/16) Overseas fee: £18,000 (for 2015/16) Academic requirements: Open to graduates with an Honours degree (2.ii or equivalent) in the biological sciences or a medical/veterinary degree. Medical or Veterinary students who have completed at least three years of study and wish to intercalate are also accepted onto the programme. Overseas candidates with other qualifications may be accepted, particularly if they have the relevant experience through working in an appropriate field for a number of years. Recognition of prior learning: All programmes of study will permit entry with credit attributed to previous certificated study up to a total of one third of the credits required to be awarded a MSc Degree, Postgraduate Diploma, Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Award Work experience: Candidates with HND and substantial relevant experience may also be considered. English language requirements: The programme is taught in English. Students whose first language is not English must provide evidence of an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of at least 6.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in all learning components, or a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of at least 88 for the Internet-based Test (iBT), with minimum scores of 21 for Listening and Writing, 22 for Reading and 23 for Speaking. Tests should be within their validity period of 2 years. Master Humanitarian Studies

The programme reviews historical and current policies and practice in humanitarian assistance, analyses the effect of war, natural disasters and the international economy on social dislocation, health and wellbeing, investigates the evidence base for current operational guidelines and explores novel approaches in responding to the challenges of today’s humanitarian problems. It is responding to the need for a professional, integrated, accountable and ethical approach to humanitarian interventions in which humanitarian workers are often called upon to operate in environments where demands extend beyond conventional professional boundaries. Opportunities for in-depth study include regional and country case studies and a choice of modules addressing specific aspects of humanitarian interventions. In addition, the programme offers participants an opportunity to develop and undertake a research project, usually overseas, in an area of special interest indicated by client Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), International Organisations (IOs) or National Ministries.
