In 1994 the Sabancı Group of Turkey decided to establish a "world university" led by the Sabancı Foundation. In the end, instead of choosing one university as a template or replicating existing examples and institutions,a new and unique university was designed. The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences has made a substantial investment to develop a Conflict Analysis and Resolution Program that is designed to provide graduate level education for Turkish and foreign students. Consistent with the philosophy and mission of the University, the Program aims to take a regional lead in providing support for peacemaking and conflict prevention schemes on the ground. Initiated in Fall 2000, the master's program in Conflict Analysis and Resolution has the following goals and objectives: Presenting students with an analytical perspective that will enable them to define objective parameters as well as the perceptual and psychological context of conflicts Equipping students with theoretical understanding and practical skills in conflict resolution so as to assist them in managing conflict situations creatively and constructively. Various approaches to conflict resolution and conflict management techniques are introduced, such as negotiation, mediation, problem solving techniques, and track two diplomacy Encouraging students to apply their conflict resolution background to policy issues related to disputes in or among governments, organizations, civil societies, or corporations. The international dimension of the program considers the changing nature of diplomacy in the post-Cold War era. In this context, the Program treats different frameworks of conflict resolution as a tool to study and generate alternative foreign policy options. The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is determined to pursue these objectives in an effective way through building international institutional networks as well as strategic alliances with universities and NGOs. Admission The M.A. Program in Conflict Analysis and Resolution (CONF) is an interdisciplinary program dedicated to improve the understanding and resolution of current, often violent social conflicts. The program combines both micro and macro level analyses that link theory with practice. For this purpose, the program encourages and promotes: Analyses of current and persistent conflict situations with an emphasis on perceptual and cultural aspects of social conflicts. Research in negotiation, third-party intervention, cooperative decision making, interactive conflict resolution, and track-two diplomacy applied to various social contexts. Creative design and implementation of conflict resolution process to policy issues related to disputes in or among identity groups, governments, organizations, civil society or corporations. International organizations, NGO's, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, consulting firms, are potential employers of our graduates. The Masters in Finance Program (MiF) is a rigorous, 10-month professional degree program specializing in applied finance. In addition to theoretical foundations, students enrolling in MiF acquire practical knowledge in finance, as well as hands-on training in our state-of the-art Center for Applied Finance Education (CAFE) facility. This unique center in the region is equipped with cutting edge technology and software, creating an up-to-date learning environment for students. Guided by an Advisory Board composed of accomplished finance professionals, our program aims to furnish students with the essential skills of a modern finance specialist. The curriculum consists of a variety of courses in corporate finance and investments, as well as “tools” courses such as financial econometrics and programming. The internship requirement in the later stages of the program helps students apply their acquired knowledge to everyday operations in the finance industry. Practicum seminars provide students continuous contact with the industry and help them plan their careers. These distinguishing aspects of the program serve to fulfill our shared vision, which is to develop the future leaders of the finance industry. Curriculum The Masters in Finance program is designed with a goal of furnishing our students with all of the essential skills for a career in finance. The program delivers a strong theoretical basis, without losing focus on practical applications, and a financial toolbox that provides our students an edge in their careers. The program is enriched with seminars and workshops, offering a contextual knowledge of the financial environment. The MiF curriculum can best be described in four components. 1. Proficiency in Financial Theory and Applications Courses in rigorous graduate-level finance programs provide students with sound theoretical foundations of finance. MiF is committed to presenting the same level of theory with a practical perspective. Our courses in corporate finance deal with the financial management of companies, as well as valuation of real assets and firms, studied through a series of case studies. On the other hand, investments courses are concerned with security pricing and portfolio management. The investments courses make heavy use of the Center for Applied Finance Education (CAFE) imparting practical knowledge of trading and handling information flow. 2. Building a Financial Toolbox Following the suggestions of our Advisory Board, the program is designed to equip students with financial tools in two major areas. The first area is the analysis of financial data, which is an essential skill in the finance industry today. To that end, ‘Financial Econometrics’ courses cover analysis of time series data and forecasting techniques from an applied perspective. ‘Financial Statement Analysis’ course teaches students the techniques used in investigating and interpreting financial statements, such as balance sheets and income statements of companies. The second tool set is related to programming and financial modeling skills, such as coding using VBA in Excel. 3. Understanding the Practice of Finance This innovative component truly distinguishes the MiF program from other finance programs. The details of the local and global finance practice are conveyed through a series of seminars, called Finance Practicum, given by experts from industry. Over two semesters, many topics of practical interest, such as tax law, security market law, company law, regulations, mergers and acquisitions, IPO processes and valuation are covered in these seminars. To give our students the opportunity to learn by doing, the MiF program is complemented by an internship requirement during the second semester of our program. 4. Developing Managerial Skills The Advisory Board is in consensus that communication skills is the most important for advancing in a professional career. Employees who can communicate ideas efficiently, in writing or verbally, definitely hold an edge in climbing the career ladder quickly. Our students participate in the Managerial Skills workshops, where, students are able to develop their writing, presentation, and interviewing skills. Program Learning Objectives MiF graduates are expected to be able to: Demonstrate knowledge of financial theory as well as practice and display critical evaluation of the knowledge. Access, interpret and analyze data and information by using current technologies; and use the results of such analyses to make financial decisions. Reflect on social and ethical responsibilities linked to the application of their finance knowledge, judgments and decision making. Communicate effectively in both written and oral form using appropriate technology where necessary, and discuss finance-related issues with both finance and non-finance professionals. Understand the international financial markets, practices, and accounting standards. Application Process The MiF Program at Sabancı University welcomes applicants with university degrees in economics, engineering, business administration or any other technical based discipline, and a strong interest and motivation for a finance career. The application process starts with filling out the online application form under the “Apply Now” link on the left, and then submitting the required documents to our program coordinator (see below for a list of required documents). Qualified candidates are invited for formal interviews couple of days after the application deadlines. Admission decisions are made right after interviews and results are conveyed to the applicants. The early application deadline is for students in need of an early response from us. We keep selected early applications in our files and reevaluate them at our regular application deadline in June. Depending on the applicant pool, early applicants could be granted admission or scholarships even if they did not receive favorable responses in early application period. The admission committee evaluates applicants with respect to their academic backgrounds and achievements, test scores, and motivations to study finance. Students should be aware of the fact that admissions committee does not disqualify students based on a single criteria. For example, low GPAs could be compensated by excellent test scores, or interview performance. [-]

Originating from problems in number theory (Euler, Gauss), the theory was first developed purely out of mathematical curiosity. For a long time, this theory was used exclusively in pure mathematics, in areas such as number theory, algebraic geometry, group theory, and so on, without any relevance to applications. The situation changed dramatically with the development of modern information technologies. Finite fields were recognized to provide a natural framework for a wide variety of applications, particularly in information transmission and data security. The research areas of the Number Theory/Algebra Group at Sabancı University include several aspects of the theory of finite fields, in particular, curves over finite fields and their applications to coding theory, the generation and analysis of pseudorandom numbers, as well as integer partitions and q-series. There has been tremendous research activity in the last decades focusing on curves over finite fields, or equivalently algebraic function fields over finite fields. Interesting results were obtained, such as the construction (by A. Garcia and H. Stichtenoth) of explicit towers of function fields meeting the Drinfeld-Vladut bound. The active, international collaboration of the Number Theory/Algebra Group is reflected by recent events such as "September Research on Curves over Finite Fields", the "SU Lecture Series on Coding Theory" and "Semester on Curves, Codes and Cryptography". Analysis The research interests of the Analysis Group lie mainly in Functional Analysis and Complex Analysis with emphasis on the structure theory of locally convex spaces; in particular, spaces of analytic, harmonic, and infinitely differentiable functions of several variables. The following areas are of particular interest: linear topological invariants, isomorphisms and bases in locally convex spaces; complex potential theory, approximation and interpolation of analytic and harmonic functions, composition operators on analytic function spaces; probability measures in infinite dimensional spaces, nonlinear theory of distributions; as well as operator theory, pseudo-differential operators and partial differential equations. In this mathematical landscape, geometry, functional analysis, complex and real analysis work together to create a rich set of phenomena, many of which still have to be understood. The Analysis Group initiated the Istanbul Analysis Seminars, which takes place every Friday. Furthermore, the Group is part of an international network for Functional and Complex Analysis comprising other groups from Wuppertal, Trier, Valencia, Ann Arbor, Poznan, Duesseldorf, Krakow, Rostov-on-Don, Uppsala, Tel Aviv, Toulouse. In the frame of this network, the conference on Real Analytic and Complex Analytic Methods in Functional Analysis was hosted by Sabancı University (September 20-24, 2004). This Conference was preceded by three others, Linear Topological Spaces and Complex Analysis (Edirne, 1994, 1996, 1999), as well as the summer semester in Complex Potential Theory (Feza Gursey Institute, 1999). Research Areas Condensed Matter Physics High Energy Astrophysics Mathematical Physics Statistical physics Theoretical Molecular Biophysics High Energy Astrophysics: High Energy Astrophysics research at Sabanci University concentrates on the structure, dynamics, and evolution of neutron stars, black holes, white dwarfs, matter in their environments, as well as the radiation emitted by these compact objects. Instrumentation research with room temperature semiconductors is also pursued. This research particularly aims at understanding the structure of matter at the highest densities, up to and beyond 10^15 g/cm^3, under extreme magnetic fields of up to10^15 G and the most rapid possible rotation rates, with rotation periods as short as milliseconds. Theoretical research, as well as observations with international X-ray and gamma ray observatory satellites, in addition to optical observations at the TÜBİTAK National Observatory are pursued. Experimental Condensed Matter Physics: The Experimental Condensed Matter Physics Group mainly focuses on the electronic and magnetic properties of nanostructures and low dimensional electronic systems under extreme physical conditions (temperatures near absolute zero and very high magnetic fields). Specimens are patterned by electron beam lithography and have features down to a few tens of nanometers. The behavior of charge carriers under these conditions represents transport regimes not only interesting for basic research but also adaptable for novel electronic device applications. Transport experiments are mostly done on graphene and GaAs based materials. Another field of study is nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS). The research in this field is focused on development of ultrasensitive displacement sensors and their applications on the problem of detecting the mechanical quantum. These experiments involve nanofabrication and high frequency measurements at low temperatures and magnetic field. The experimental research groups also develop scientific instruments for their research. A scanning tunneling microscope (STM) that will operate at ultra high vacuum, cryogenic temperatures and magnetic field is now being built. STM is to be used as a surface science tool. It is also used to create structures with dimensions down to the atomic level and to probe their properties. A non-contact Atomic Force Microscope(nc-AFM) operating in Ultra High Vacuum(UHV) is developed to study lateral force interactions at atomic scale. This microscope is being used to study atomic scale friction and molecular scale manipulation on Si(111) surface. A general purpose Atomic Force Microscope is also used for characterization of nanostructures. Scanning Hall Probe Microscopes(SHPM) operating at low and room temperatures are developed and used to study magnetic properties of superconductors and magnetic nanostructures. The first graphene materials have successfully been produced in the group using mechanical exfoliation. Graphene Hall sensors are being developed for SHPM applications. Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics: The theoretical nanophysics group focuses on fundamental physics problems that arise in nanometer scale objects. Recent research interests of the group were on quantum transport in nanostructures, mesosopic physics, graphene physics, spintronics, spin Hall effect and topological insulators. The quantum information group is working on quantum entanglement and decoherence - not only fundamental concepts of quantum mechanics but also important challenges in the construction of quantum computers. Mathematical Physics: String theory is considered to be the best candidate for a quantum theory of gravity. In mathematics, bosonic string states and vertex operators offer the most direct representation of the Monster, the biggest simple finite group. The structure constants of the Fake Monster Lie algebra can be shown to be identical with 3-string amplitudes. Other sporadic finite groups and hyperbolic Lie algebras are also of interest due to the insights they may provide into string theory. Furthermore, string theory can still be useful in hadron phenomenology, where it originated. Although string theories require 10 or 11 or 26 dimensions, our perceived spacetime is four dimensional. This may be a consequence of some very special properties of 4-manifolds such as the existence of uncountably many distinct R4's. Four-manifolds are also unique in harboring selfdual gauge fields and Weyl spinors for Euclidean signature. Statistical Physics: Major research topics in statistical physics at Sabancı University include phase transitions and critical phenomena, renormalization-group theory, high-temperature superconductivity, quantum particles and spins, scale-free and small-world networks, water in nanotubes and its viscosity, and order in the presence of frozen disorder and spin glasses. Theoretical Molecular Biophysics: Concepts from physics are applied to problems in molecular biology in two complementary ways. On the one hand, because the biological function of life's molecules is constrained by their physical and chemical properties, it is important to describe the functional transformations these molecules undergo using the language of chemical physics. On the other, the most successful experimental techniques for probing the structure and dynamics of biomolecules at atomic resolution exploit the fundamental physical properties of these molecules, like their interaction with mechanical and electromagnetic forces. Research in theoretical molecular biophysics at Sabancı University touches on both of these aspects. Employing the toolboxes of equilibrium and nonequilibrium statistical mechanics we develop efficient computational approaches for identifying and characterizing large-scale conformational transitions of biomolecules using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. In addition, we develop a methodogy for utilizing the detailed dynamical information contained in the MD trajectories to simulate electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of the studied biomolecules. With a highly flexible curriculum that capitalizes on the intellectual and scholarly resources available at one of Turkey's leading private universities, MATS offers students a broad range of courses in History, Political Science, Economics, Cultural Studies, Conflict Resolution, and Visual Arts. In addition, the curriculum also seeks to meet the needs of those international students who wish to learn or improve their command of the Turkish language. Also available are a number of other language courses, including, for example, Ottoman Turkish, Arabic, Persian or Kurdish. The program offers several advancement possibilities. Graduates will be competitive candidates for PhD programs in various fields of the Humanities and the Social Sciences, including especially History and Political Science (as already borne out by our still very young alumni placement record). The MA degree in Turkish Studies is also likely to enhance the career prospects of students for positions in the public sector (diplomacy and various bureaucratic careers), the private sector (international business, media, tourism), and international ngo’s. The normal duration of the program is a year and a half (three semesters), while students can be enrolled for a maximum of four semesters. This does not include our seven-week Summer Terms; nor does it cover term-leaves of absence. We have thesis and non-thesis tracks. In the thesis track, students have to take and pass a minimum of 8 credit courses, plus a non-credit Pro-Seminar, as well as an also non-credit MA Thesis course. Within the framework of the said MA Thesis course, they are expected to research and write an MA thesis of around 70 pages on a previously submitted and approved topic. In the non-thesis track, a minimum of 10 credit courses plus an MA Project are required. For further details, see MATS degree requirements (non-thesis). (Program Requirements may vary according to the year of first enrollment. Scholarships usually cover the normal program duration (of three semesters). In the thesis track, any student who has successfully completed his/her coursework within three semesters, but who needs additional thesis completion time, may, upon applying to the Social Sciences Institute, be granted a fourth semester without any scholarship, but subject to the payment of a smaller retainer’s fee instead of normal tuition. Admission Requirements for Social Sciences Institute Applications for graduate programs are evaluated by the Admissions Committee of the relevant program. Admission is finalized by the approval of the related Graduate School Board upon the recommendation of the Admissions Committee and announced to the applicant. Obtaining the MA degree of the Visual Art and Visual Communication Design graduate program involves a 4 semester long period of rigorous study which combines studio work in art, design or theoretical study related to these fields, and which form the three main tracks of the program. Over the past century, and acceleratedly so during recent decades, visuality has become pervasive in all aspects of life due to the proliferation of media based communication devices which can be observed to have a strong basis in visuality. Thus the mission of the VACD program is to provide the student with an in-depth understanding of visuality and its applications to the domains of Visual Art and Visual Communication Design. However, our efforts go beyond a sole understanding / application of the visual fields themselves in that we also seek to bring about their integration with other creative output such as sound design, new media output and temporally based works implemented through the diversified building blocks of our curriculum.
