Introduction

The Eastern Mediterranean University is the largest university on the island of Cyprus. The university has its roots in the Higher Technological Institute, a vocational training college established in 1979. EMU was founded in 1986 and during the same year the Faculty of Business and Economics opened its doors to students enrolling in the two undergraduate programs of Business Administration and Economics. In 25 years, our student numbers have grown from 40 to more than 2000 with 16 Undergraduate, 6 Masters and 4 Doctoral programs offered directly by our Faculty or by the School of Applied Disciplines division of our Faculty. Our students are approximately 10% local, 45% from the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia, and the Balkans and another 45% from Turkey. We employ 45 full-time faculty members, 14 part time faculty and 22 Research Assistants.

The Faculty of Business and Economics is the leading academic center in social sciences in North Cyprus. We take pride in the high academic standards we uphold while sustaining a student-friendly environment. Our graduates mostly pursue careers in reputable firms, whilst some proceed to further academic studies. Faculty members are well qualified with doctoral degrees from reputable universities. They remain current in their teaching fields through research and publications in top scholarly journals. Our faculty members are regularly consulted in the media and by public and private organizations as authorities in their fields. We also run several collaborative projects with the Chambers of Commerce and Industry and other stakeholders.

In addition to our membership in AACSB International, our Faculty is also a member of the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD), and of the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR). We have been named as one of the best 1000 business schools in the world by Eduniversal, an educational consulting firm based in France. The Webometrics Ranking produced by the Cybermetrics Lab, a unit of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), the main public research body in Spain has announced that our faculty ranks 3rd among Turkish business schools, 14th among schools in the Middle east, 155th among schools in Asia and 329th among schools in Europe.

Located in the port city of Gazimagusa, near some breathtaking natural and historical sites, EMU reaches out to the global community through international conferences and research centers. We recently hosted a number of very successful international conferences in Entrepreneurship, Banking and Finance and Economics which attracted large numbers of participants from various universities around the world. We have also signed an agreement with the Warwick Manufacturing Group of Warwick University offers the Master of Engineering Management and the Master of Supply Chain Management on our campus in collaboration with us.

Our courses are supported by an online Course Management System which is very widely used by faculty and students and handles over 7,000 uploads and downloads per day. We have joined the SAP University Alliance program and we are planning to integrate various modules of the software into our curriculum.

The Master of Science (M.S.) program in Banking and Finance is designed to equip graduate students with specialized analytical skills applicable to their professional interests in corporate finance, investment appraisal/cost-benefit analysis, project finance, financial risk management, commercial and investment banking, international finance, and financial economics. The Master of Science (M.S.) program in Banking and Finance is designed to equip graduate students with specialized analytical skills applicable to their professional interests in corporate finance, investment appraisal/cost-benefit analysis, project finance, financial risk management, commercial and investment banking, international finance, and financial economics. The graduate students may earn their M.S. degree in Banking and Finance in two ways: With thesis or non-thesis option. With thesis option, students take four core courses plus three elective courses and a master’s thesis. With the non-thesis option, students take five core courses plus the completion of a further five elective courses and a term paper. In addition to the MS degree, the program has strong and established international collaborations. Graduate students can take their elective courses on-line from the Canadian Securities Institute (CSI) obtain the professional designation called Associate of the Institute of Canadian Bankers (AICB). Additionally, through our established cooperation with CSI, students can also take Canadian Securities Course (CSC) which is recognized as the industry benchmark and delivers the training employers demand particularly for securities dealership/agent positions. Lastly, students can also enroll in the CSI’s Personal Financial Planner (PFP) program, a leading industry standard, ensuring that graduates gain the knowledge, skills and tools to evaluate and manage various wealth forms to optimize their clients’ financial situations. Completing the PFP program will qualify you to write the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) examination offered by the Financial Planners Standards Council (FPSC) of Canada. Through the elective courses, the MS in Banking and Finance Program students can take the required courses at EMU on-line and prepare themselves to write the CFP examination by successfully completing the Canadian Securities Course (CSC), Financial Planning I and II courses. Furthermore, the Department of Banking and Finance has an agreement with the John Deutsch International Executive Programs of Queen’s University (Canada) that enable graduate students to earn the Queen’s University Certificate in Investment Appraisal and Risk Analysis while studying at EMU. This is a renowned professional certificate in the area of investment appraisal that graduate students can obtain while studying at Eastern Mediterranean University. By taking three courses from the discipline of investment appraisal at EMU, students qualify to take the Queen’s University comprehensive examination in this field at EMU, and if successful, then are awarded this professional certification. Admission Requirements Applicants are expected to satisfy general admission requirements of the Institute. The objective of the Master's program in economics is to provide advanced training in the application of economic theory and quantitative methods for the analysis of economic problems and the design of economic policies. Candidates for the Master of Science degree in economics are required to complete eight courses (24 credit-hours) and a thesis. The program consists of three required core courses ECON 501 Microeconomic Theory, ECON 502 Macroeconomic Theory and Policy, and ECON 503 Econometrics I. In addition, the students must complete five elective courses in economics or a closely related field. Students who wish to complete the master’s program in economics who have completed an undergraduate degree in another field may be admitted to the program, subject to successfully completing selected prerequisite undergraduate economics courses. Admission Requirements Applications to the Master program at Department of Economics are accepted twice a year, prior to the beginning of each semester. All applicants for whom English is a second language may be required to pass an English proficiency examination, or present a recent TOEFL score above 525 for Masters Candidates. Those students whose 4-year university education is in English medium are not required to sit for the English proficiency examination. Bachelor's degree requirements for Master's level program are as specified in the program descriptions below. Prospective applicants are required to fill out an application form available at the Registrar's Office, and submit the completed form, together with a letter of reference and an official transcript of all graduate and undergraduate coursework completed up to the time of application. Candidates, who are not citizens of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus or the Republic of Turkey, are required in addition to submit a document of financial guarantee showing that sufficient funds are available for tuition and living expenses. The Master of Arts in International Relations is offered either as a terminal program or in preparation for PhD level studies. Candidates should have obtained a B.A. degree in related fields. It is also a productive degree to be undertaken by mid-career officials from public and private organizations. Furthermore, the M.A. program provides the foundations for a Ph.D. Program. The program is designed to be interdisciplinary, a design which reflects the complexity of the field of international relations, the growing interdependence of social sciences, and the diversity of occupations that graduates are expected to confront in the public and private sectors. Instruction is heavily oriented towards interdependent study and research, entailing critical thinking, debate, and peer feedback.
