Umeå University, Faculty of Science and Technology

Introduction

Umeå University was founded in 1965 and is Sweden's fifth oldest university. Today, we have a strong international and multicultural presence with students, teachers and researchers from all over the world. As one of the leading comprehensive universities in the nation, we are alive with enthusiasm, creativity and fresh ideas.

We constantly strive towards being one of Scandinavia and Europe's best environments for education, research and community engagement that meets the challenges of an ever-increasing global society.

Our Campuses

Umeå University's Campus Umeå is the main campus and is patterned after the American Campus model. Consequently, almost all of the courses and programmes that are taught in English take place on Campus Umeå or at the adjacent University Hospital.

Campus Umeå

There are actually two campuses in Umeå, the largest city in northern Sweden. Campus Umeå is the main campus and focal centre of Umeå University, and the vast majority of the courses and programmes are held in its many buildings and facilities. The University Library with its 1.2 million volumes, and Universum, the campus' hub, with its pubs, cafés, restaurants, bookstore, student study rooms and so on are also situated on Campus Umeå

Umeå Arts Campus

Umeå Arts Campus (konstnärligt campus) - currrently in development - is situated on the east side of town by the scenic banks of the Umeå River and is within short walking distance of Campus Umeå. It hosts the Umeå Institute of Design, Umeå Academy of Fine Arts and new Umeå School of Architecture. HUMlab-X also has been given a place at this new "artistic campus," along with Bildmuseet, Umeå University's museum of contemporary art and visual culture.

Campus Skellefteå and Campus Örnskoldvik

Our campuses in the Skellefteå and Örnsköldvik mainly offer programmes and courses with regional ties, both full-time and part-time courses at a slower study tempo. The educational programs are developed and designed according to an inventory of needs with local or regional connection.

Other Study Locations

Umeå University also has a presence in many other towns and municipalities in northern Sweden, including Lyksele and Kiruna. In addition, thousands of people who are enrolled in our wide selection of distance education courses and programmes have the flexibility of primarily studying in their home environments.

Master's Programme in Computational Science and Engineering

Computational Science & Engineering (CS&E) is a field of knowledge which aims at the development of methods that rely on computers and mathematics to model, simulate, and visualize various kinds of systems. CS&E combines several different disciplines such as computer science including numerical analysis, applied mathematics, physics, and technology. The applications are literally found everywhere. They often deal with complicated and/or complex systems, and often require the management and analysis of large data sets. Applications include analysis of pictures, optimization of industrial processes, web-based search for information, risk analysis, the mechanism behind aurora borealis, pricing of financial derivates, computer games, and special effects in movies.... Master's Programme in Geoecology

The Department of Ecology and Environmental Science at Umeå University offers a 2-year Master of Science Programme for students that would like to specialize in Geoecology. Geoecology integrates the fields of Geosciences and Ecology. With an emphasis on the Nordic landscape, you will study natural earth processes, climate change and the effects of anthropogenic impact, such as resource utilization and pollution. These processes result in a more dynamic environment than what is generally recognized, and you will develop an awareness of environmental changes on timescales from years to millennia.

InstructionThe Study Programme starts with a field course, Field Methods in Geoecology. After that, you will have opportunities to take theoretical courses and applied courses directed towards field studies, as well as courses directed towards Geographic Information Systems. The programme is very flexible, as the only compulsory courses are the first course, Field methods in Geoecology, 15 ETCS, and the final Degree thesis, 30 ECTS. Courses can otherwise be chosen freely, as long as the requirements for the M.Sc. degree are met.... [-]

Master's Programme in Human-Computer Interaction

In addition to the continued development of increasingly powerful and portable personal computers, a range of new artefacts is appearing, including car navigation devices and electronic books, adding to a large number of traditional artefacts, such as cameras, phones, washing machines, and fitness equipment, all of which are IT-artefacts which include advanced information processing components.

The trend towards the widespread use of IT-artefacts is one of the key aspects of the so-called "digital transformation", a revolutionary transformation of our culture and society that places a heavy emphasis on information and knowledge. This trend gives rise to new phenomena of human interaction with technology and world. Computational capabilities of the interactive things we use every day, combined with powerful new communication, input, and output capabilities, provide great possibilities for human action but also create numerous problems. Realising this potential effectively and efficiently requires that the interaction between people and IT-artefacts becomes an object of study dealing with both people and technology.... [-]
