Stockholm Business School belongs to Stockholm University.

The University, which dates back to 1878, is a regional centre for research and education, set in a wonderful cultural and natural environment in the world's first national city park.

SBS is responsible for educating business leaders and managers of the future in both the private and public sector. The school aims to develop the learning process in such a way that creative thinking and critical reasoning are the guiding principles for the entire study programme. Our courses are based on the latest research. Close contacts with the worlds of business and research, both at a national and international level, allow us to offer a transnational education. We have more than 3,500 students, around seventy lecturers/researchers, some forty doctoral students and about thirty administrative staff. We collaborate closely with universities in Sweden and abroad.

SBS is located in restored buildings dating back to 1912 in the traditional Kräftriket campus area, beautifully located near the picturesque Brunnsviken lake. The area is within walking distance of Stockholm city centre, is easily accessible by public transportation.

Utilising the School’s long-standing expertise in management and organisation research, this master’s programme integrates advanced social science perspectives and methods to address managerial and organisational practices and to understand the social and political context they are embedded in. Why management studies? The programme deals with key issues facing people in contemporary organisations, including strategic management, organisational change, leadership, knowledge work, and power. Furthermore, the programme relates these management and organisation issues to broader societal issues such as globalization, developments in the political economy, the financial crisis, and so on. The programme is firmly rooted in the belief that contemporary as well as future corporations need individual employees who understand how business is both affected by and affects society - politically, economically and culturally. It is through this approach, which focuses both on the practice and issues of organisations and on how these relate to broader societal concerns, that the programme aims to provide students with knowledge and skills to critically analyse and deal with the forces and practices that shape and change the future of management and organisations. What you will learn During the programme you will develop an advanced understanding of core management and organisation theories through courses such as Human Resource Management; Leadership; Power, Change and Resistance in organisations, and Management across cultures. You will also study cutting edge research pursued by faculty members in the School's Management section, such as entrepreneurship, business ethics, health and business, leaders and elites, etc. Furthermore, throughout the programmes you will relate the specific course themes to the societal context of management and organisations. Your future career The programme provides a solid background for students pursuing a career within management-, recruitment- and outplacement consulting, a management or consultant position within human resources, a political career within governmental departments dealing with the economy and the labour market, etc. The programme also provides an excellent platform for students pursuing an academic career in research and teaching. Programme outline Semester 1 & 2 : During the first two semesters you take a series of mandatory courses that concern: general organisation and management theory, business and society, entrepreneurship, management in a globalized world, human resource management, leadership , power and change in organisations, and research methodology. Semester 3: During the third semester you may broaden or specialise your expertise by choosing from a number of electives offered at the School or at other departments within the Faculty of Social Sciences, or do an exchange semester abroad. You can also arrange an internship, in which case you are appointed a supervisor who will help you relate your practical experiences in to themes, issues and theories within the field of organisation and management studies. Semester 4: The fourth semester is devoted to social science methods and to the master’s dissertation. The dissertation enables you to further advance the skills and knowledge you have developed through the taught courses by applying relevant theoretical perspectives and social science methods in an empirical setting. The master's programme in Consumer & Business Marketing gives you the necessary knowledge and skills to critically analyze the forces and practices that shape and change the future of markets, organizations and communities and to address the social and political context wherein they are embedded. The programme provides a solid background for students pursuing a career in marketing, communication, consulting and government. The programme also provides a solid background for students pursuing an academic career in research and teaching.

Courses

Students take four courses per term during the first two semesters. Courses on the programme include marketing theory, consumer culture theory, expressive communication strategies, and strategic management. In the third semester you may broaden or specialize your interests by choosing between a number of select electives offered by the School or by other departments in the Social Sciences Faculty. Nordic and EU citizens also have the option of international exchange. During the last semester of the programme you will write a 15,000 words master’s dissertation. The dissertation enables you to further advance the skills and knowledge you have developed during the taught courses by applying relevant theoretical perspectives and social science methods in an empirical setting. The dissertation is a scholarly piece of work where you are expected to make a contribution to both research and practice.... [-]
