Introduction

Luleå University of Technology has an annual turnover of EUR 160 million. Today the University has 1,500 employees and 16,000 students. Research is carried out in close cooperation with companies such as Shell, Ericsson, Scania, LKAB, Airbus, Volvo Aero and IBM and with the University's international partners such as Monash University and Stanford University. This research has a turnover of more than EUR 90 million.

The University is the only one in Sweden with a cohesive campus environment according to the British model where everything is gathered nearby. Campus environment helps to make it easy to meet friends and to communicate with your teachers. Luleå University of Technology's four campuses: Lulea, which is our main campus, Piteå, Skellefteå and Kiruna.

Master Program in Earths Atmosphere and the Solar System

This two-year program is focused on the exciting research areas of the Earth Atmosphere and the Solar System. The course is given in Kiruna, located well north of the Arctic circle. Kiruna is known for its excellent space research infrastructure. [+]

This two-year program is focused on the exciting research areas of the Earth Atmosphere and the Solar System. The course is given in Kiruna, located well north of the Arctic circle. Kiruna is known for its research infrastructure and provides contact with the various institutions and service providers within atmospheric and space research.During the program's first year, you will gain knowledge of the Earth's atmosphere and the Solar System and observation of these. You will be introduced into the physical processes which are important to describe and understand the atmosphere and the Solar System. Additionally you will be introduced to the technical and mathematical methods used to observe and model these processes.During the second year you will strengthen your knowledge through courses and by participating in various space projects. A large part of the education and work is done as group work in project form. Your master thesis work will be performed at a space technology company, space organization, or an academic department in Kiruna or another part of the world. An unique environment for Atmospheric and Space research has been built up in Kiruna. The Swedish Institute of Space Physics, one of the world's premier space research centers, builds satellite instruments for distant voyages to other planets and celestial bodies. Many international research groups operate instruments for continuous atmospheric observations in Kiruna. Due to the infrastructure, Kiruna often is the base for major international measurement campaigns. From Esrange sounding rockets and giant stratospheric balloons are launched regularly. The experiments are, among other topics related to ozone research as well as studies of the universe's origin. The international organization EISCAT has one of its receiving stations in Kiruna, providing data for studies of meteors and Northern lights.The program utilizes these organizations giving you as a student an opportunity to evaluate satellite measurements, perform balloon flights to the stratosphere and meet active researchers in the field. Guest speakers from the aerospace industry and academia are also common in the education.The lectures are in English.Labour marketThe graduated students have wide and deep competence and are ready to  work within various areas, i.e. fundamental space research, atmospheric research, environmental monitoring,  space technology and engineering. This course provides the opportunity for an academic career in Atmospheric and Space Science with work opportunities in several Universities and research institutes and organizations all over Europe. Other employers are in the field of environmental monitoring. Some of the major European space players are ESA, EADS/Astrium, and RUAG   Space. During the first year of your studies important concepts within the area will be defined, for example information security, safety, critical systems, information classification, and risk analysis. Other important issues are techniques to transfer information between users in business and how transferring can be made in a secure way. Internet Secutity is a course during the first year where you learn more about this. You also gain knowledge of professions and roles from a security perspective and important standards used. The first year is completed by project work in a company or a public authority. The function of cooperation and collaboration and the system for decision making are important when working with security. Therefore, during the second year you learn about information security management. Research within the area of information security is one other issue during the second year. The master program in Computer Science and Engineering with specialization in Mobile Systems is for students who have completed a Bachelors degree in Computer Science or related disciplines. The program focuses on mobility enabling computer and communication technologies, applications for handheld and mobile devices as well as new services enabled by mobile systems and networks.This program is designed for students who wish to enhance and advance their knowledge in the areas of mobile computing systems, software engineering for applications and systems using mobile networks and devices, computer communications, distributed and web-based applications and services. The program has also strong focus on developing research skills, in particular, ability to identify and define the problem, propose a theoretical solution and support this proposal with implementation and validation.Coursework primarily consists of advanced courses related to research areas within the Department of Computer Science and Electrical engineering. The first year is based on course work and the second year is dominated by a development project as well as a larger thesis work that is often carried out in cooperation with hi-tech ICT industry which is strongly present in and around LTU. Such R&D companies as Ericsson Research, and others, including many SMEs, may offer industrial placement program and internships to outstanding students. Theses are usually supervised by academic staff members who are internationally recognized researchers and experts in the field. This two-year program is focused on one of the most exciting and prestigious areas there are: design of spacecraft. This includes integration of complex technical systems that must work in an extreme environment: space. The course is given in Kiruna, located well north of the arctic circle. This “space capital” of Sweden gives you close contact with organizations active in space engineering.A spacecraft, which also is called a satellite if its orbit is bound to a celestial body, is designed around the payload instruments it shall carry and the environment it shall work in. During the first year of the course you acquire knowledge about the space environment,   which the spacecraft shall operate in, and also how it travels and orients itself in space. You learn about the various subsystems which make up the spacecraft and how it communicates with the surrounding world. Further, you get an understanding for the specific space electronics that are required and learn how the on-board computers work. You also get an insight into typical payloads that a satellite may carry.The second year you are working with computer design of a spacecraft, fit to carry the instruments that are constructed by you and your colleagues. Here, a large part of the education and work is done in project form and as group work. Your master thesis work is performed at a space technology company, space organization, or academic department, in Kiruna or other part of the world.A space research environment, unique for Europe, has been established in Kiruna.
