University of Borås

Introduction

About University of Borås

The University of Borås is a modern university with three Academies. We manage educations in Library and Information Studies, Business and Informatics, Fashion and Textile Studies, Behavioural and Education Sciences, Engineering and Health Sciences. The campus is located in the centre of the city and we have approx. 14 000 students and 650 employees. Several of our educations can only be found here with us and this attracts students from all over Sweden.

The University of Borås has the front edge on several exciting research projects. The two most important ones are "Resource Recovery" from waste and "Smart textiles", both of which build on regional sucess-factors and close co-operation with regional companies and research organizations. How about maiking ethanol from used jeans or fabrics that can change colour when with thermocromic inks, garments which measure muscular frequency and knitted stents.

Furthermore, our students have really no problems finding jobs or are being found by employers. The fact is that the University of Borås year after year is placed in the top when the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education investigates the employment situation. We keep what we promise. Science for Profession.

University of Borås is a member of the European University Association (EUA). EUA represents and supports higher education institutions in 46 countries, providing them with a unique forum to cooperate and keep abreast of the latest trends in higher education and research policies.

Goals & Visions

The University of Borås's concept is being an innovative professions seat of learning which, in cooperation with the business sphere and the public sector, conducts education and research of high international quality with social relevance. On the basis of a direction focusing on qualified professions, settled upon when the University was founded in 1977, the University of Borås has formulated the goal of becoming the first professions seat of learning. Such a university is characterised by systematic cooperation with the companies and authorities of the surrounding society, what we call partnership. Education and research is not a one-sided commitment for the University of Borås, but is planned, carried out and evaluated in cooperation with our partners. The professions' competence needs, their development and problems take center stage.

An important part of the idea of a university of professions is the development of new forms of examination. The University of Borås wants to create educational programmes with the degree of master of professions and doctor of professions in the Swedish system of examination. We see the realisation of the university of professsions as not only a question of a government decision, but primarily as a gradual quality and profiling process. An important stop on that path is the establishment of a new area of professions, a seventh department, at the seat of learning. The University is working hard at establishing educational programmes focusing on risk, security and safety aspects, for example an academic police training programme.

Master in Fashion and Textile Design

Campus Full time 2 years August 2017 Sweden Borås

The Master’s Programme in Textile and Fashion Design aims to further develop and deepen your artistic, technical, theoretical and reflective skills and abilities as textile/fashion designers. [+]

Master Programme in Fashion and Textile Design with Spec. in Fashion Design or Textile Design The Master’s Programme in Textile and Fashion Design aims to further develop and deepen your artistic, technical, theoretical and reflective skills and abilities as textile/fashion designers. The programme offers in-depth practice-based studies in work developed by the students in a progressing system that starts with the application project and ends with degree work. Critical reflection is embedded in courses that relate historical art and design analysis and theory to a diverse range of practises; from projects that focus on your individual abilities to collaborative artistic projects in cooperation with organisations, institutes and companies. Thus, the programme enhances individual artistic and technical skills, ultimately aiming at training professional designers with high artistic proficiency that are excellent practitioners of design, or able to go into practice-based design research, or both. Depending on your BA degree in design, you choose area of specialisation: textile design or fashion design, with sub-divisionary applications. Specific challenges and discourses are intrinsically linked to each area of specialisation, but also open up for work where these intersect. The programme aims at nurturing your ability to identify, strategically handle, and propose solutions to a range of differing problems. Critical reflection is an important tool in this, developed through discussions and by presenting problems and solutions to both peers and to representatives of the design community. From having acquired familiarity of the design field at large, you are trained to evaluate, contextualize and criticise your own work as well as the works of others. As the fundament for artistic expression, the programme puts strong emphasis on further developing your understanding and working knowledge of techniques and design materials specific to textile and fashion design. To further reflection, issues of sustainability are an important part of this. Works developed within the programme range from critical artistic work that suggests alternative designs to prototypes introducing new advanced techniques and materials. A general goal for the programme is providing a holistic and critical view of the profession in relation to both specific challenges and a global industry. The programme aims to prepare you for a practise in constant change by providing tools that allow you to become an actuator of beneficial and sustainable change. A holistic and artistic starting point thus becomes a question of uniting aesthetics, ethics, and economy in an applicable form that can function as a basis for critical reflection on products and production. The master’s programme is directed towards deepening with regards to design development and artistic reflection. This is grounded in the shifting of your focus from the individual design project to a design programme that is exemplified and deepened in various projects, i.e. a thematic, overriding programme declaration that supports focusing on design decisions central in how general design intentions can be manifested in individual design projects. A design programme can, very broadly, point out an ideological direction or, more concretely, introduce new possibilities in concepts, materials and/or techniques. Entry Requirements Bachelor’s degree in Design or equivalent. Knowledge of English language on par with Swedish Upper Secondary School B. An application to the Master Programme should, besides verified merits, contain an application project and a application portfolio. In the application project, specialisation (textile design or fashion design) should be noted, together with a description of the issues the student wishes to focus on during his/her work within the frame of the design project courses of the programme. A number of applicants will be called to interviews, where the application is discussed with regard to artistic qualities in the portfolio and the direction of the application project. For programmes leading to an artistic degree at University of Borås, a general assessment takes place of qualifications for basic entry requirements, special entry requirements and selection. Applications to any study programme leading to an artistic degree must include an application portfolio as well as confirmed formal qualifications. Following review of application portfolios and other documentation, a number of applicants will be called to interview. Here, the applications will be discussed with regard to artistic ability demonstrated and the other qualifications of applicants. An overall assessment of applicants’ application portfolios, other qualifications and interviews will take place. Assessment of general entry requirements (with reference to HF, section 7 § 5) will take place within the framework of the overall assessment of application portfolios and other qualifications. If the general entry requirements for studies on advanced level (master degree) is based on Swedish or international education, practical experience or based on any other circumstance has the condition to assimilate the education (with reference to HF 7, section 28 § 2), decision shall be written registered. Examination Degree of Master of Fine Arts (120 credits) in Fashion and Textile Design - Fashion Design Degree of Master of Fine Arts (120 credits) in Fashion and Textile Design - Textile Design The exam is based on evaluation of design work, oral and visual presentation, and written reflection in accordance with learning outcomes for each course.
