Student Information

Students are issued a student handbook on enrollment. Students are issued module information at the first taught session for each module concerned to include module learning outcomes, teaching schedule, reading lists and assessment requirements (tasks, assessment length, hand in arrangements) The coordinator is maintaining regular contact with module leaders to ensure the smooth administration of the course.

With the rich experiences gained through the past decade of excellence and counsel from hundreds of alumni and friends, SLIIT Computing steps into a new frontier with a Master’s degree in Project Management in collaboration with the prestigious University of Keele (UK). ENTRY REQUIREMENT Bachelor’s Degree or appropriate professional qualifications Applicants with substantial years of experience will also be considered. AIMS OF THE COURSE The MSc in Project Management Course brings together components from both the School of Computing & Mathematics and the Keele Management School. This programme is intended to provide the student with the technical and process skills to undertake the role of a project manager in the modern business environment. The course will cover all the basic project management areas as defined in the Project Management Book of Knowledge and in addition will provide the soft skills required in team building and people management. COURSE STRUCTURE The MSc in Project Management course is a 12 month programme starting in September, comprising six 15-credit taught modules and one 30 credit distributed team project module (120 credits) plus a dissertation or internship (60 credits). During semester 1 (September to January) students take four core modules. During semester 2 (January to May) students take three core modules. From the end of May to September, students undertake either a dissertation or internship, which is often industrially based. Students gaining 120 credits from taught modules and successfully completing the dissertation will be awarded an MSc. Students gaining 120 credits from taught modules and successfully completing a dissertation or internship will be awarded an MSc. Students gaining 120 credits but not proceeding to the dissertation or internship will be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma. Students who do not gain 120 credits but pass taught modules equalling 60 credits will be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate. ASSESSMENT The taught modules are mainly assessed by coursework, with examinations in some of the modules. Dissertation and internship assessment is based largely on a substantial final report. CORE MODULES (15 credits each – unless otherwise stated) Accounting and Finance -This module aims to develop an understanding of financial accounting, management accounting and financial management, and the financial aspects of managerial decision making. On completion of the module, students should have an understanding of the organisational role of accounting and finance and the theory underlying financial accounting, management accounting and financial management. In addition, students should have developed technical and analytical skills with regard to accounting, finance and decision making. Marketing & Operations Management -This module aims to introduce students to key concepts and aspects pertaining to marketing and the management of design and operations in business organisations. It explores, in depth, marketing and operations concepts issues and provides an understanding of the marketing mix, strategies for new products and branding, and the strategic aspects of marketing. The module seeks to define and understand the purpose and functions of marketing concepts and tools for business organisation success. People and Organisations - This module encourages independent and critical thought on how the terms people and organization are understood, related and managed. Throughout the course, students are advised to relate the material to their own work experience. Aims: To develop a critical understanding of the historical and contemporary context of organizing To explore issues of organization and control as a ‘top-down’ account concerned with structure, through both in classical and contemporary theories of organizations. To relate all the above to contemporary technologies of managing people – such as human resource management – in terms of notions of diversity, culture and commitment, organizational participation and issues of selection and assessment. Learning objectives: Introduce students to key concepts and issues associated with behavior in work organizations. Examine the relationships between aspects of behavior and issues of organizational structure and management. Explore the historical and social contexts of contemporary organizing. Familiarize students with some of the methods and processes of research in and about organizations. Problem Solving Skills for Consultants -In a business environment, professional skills are just as vital as technical abilities and knowledge. This module provides such skills including project management, team working and building, and communication skills. It also provides knowledge of ethical, legal and social issues related to the development and deployment of Information Technology. Some of the lectures are given by invited speakers from industry. Metrics, Estimation, Analysis and Teams -A modern project manager must be comfortable with a number of underpinning technologies and skills if they are to be effective at both a project and an organisational level. In particular, the majority of techniques involve the collection and use of metrics and their subsequent analysis for either project monitoring or process improvement. This module aims to provide the student with the requisite skills and knowledge in these areas. The student will also understand the construction of teams and be able to function as both a team member and a team leader. Dissertation or Internship (60 credits) -Students will undertake either a dissertation or an internship based in an industrial organisation. Company Internship -The aim of this is to give masters students the opportunity to undertake a company internship, plus produce an accompanying 7,000 word management report. Should students opt to select the company internship module, it is only available to them after a comprehensive selection process. Masters students who meet the company internship criteria will be attached to an organisation/company for a period of between 8-12 weeks. During this time they will need to undertake, in conjunction with the School and organisation, a discreet management project on behalf of the organisation/company. The company internship will be available for masters students during the period June-September for students enrolling during the preceding October on the full-time course. At the end of this the students will be able to: Identify, evaluate and propose possible solutions to an identified managerial issue (this will be subject to an agreed project proposal). Comprehensively develop a personal skills set enabling them to work successfully in any comparable organisation after completing the course. Present and prepare a management report jointly to the employer and faculty. Work independently and within the guidelines and parameters ofthe sponsoring organisation. Demonstrate competence in a wide range of transferable skills to the satisfaction of the employer in a way agreed in a learning contract. Reflect on their working practice from a managerial perspective. Dissertation -This involves the student undertaking an independent research dissertation that will involve both research and the development of a defined project management-related topic, either drawn from a list of such proposed topics or defined by the student in conjunction with either faculty staff or a sponsoring organisation. Apart from the topic, the aims and process are identical to those currently used on existing MSc’s run from either the School of Computing and Mathematics or Keele Management School.
