Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University
As the largest higher education institution in the Eastern and Southern Cape, South Africa, the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) currently has 21 848 undergraduate and 3661 postgraduate students enrolled on six different campuses.
The NMMU is based in Port Elizabeth which is situated approximately 700km east of Cape Town, on the south coast of South Africa.
Port Elizabeth is the perfect place to experience South African hospitality. Although big enough to offer many city attractions, it is not overwhelming and you can easily get to know your surroundings, enjoying the blue skies and beaches during the summer months, or the many top quality restaurants and shopping centres in the cooler months.
Approximately 10% of the student body registered at the NMMU consists of international students from diverse backgrounds outside of South Africa. The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University is truly living up to its name as the most culturally diverse university in the country.
The current list of registered students at the NMMU features a unique blend of international students with the highest numbers being from countries such as Botswana, Burundi, Cameroon, China, Countries in Europe, United States of America, Korea, Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Ireland, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Uganda, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Malawi, Namibia, Uganda, Kenya, USA, Zambia, Cameroon, Seychelles, Somalia, Sudan, Swaziland and Zimbabwe to name a few! Adding to this melting pot of diversity, in January 2014 and January 2015, the NMMU welcomed students from Mexico, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Cuba, India, Brazil, Czech Republic, Iran, Italy, Portugal, Malaysia and Yemen.
Nelson Mandela Bay is home to some one million people who work in manufacturing industries, agricultural processing, tourism and the services sector. Part of the NMMU’s mandate is to provide highly skilled people to work in the local economy. The aim is to meet the demand for quality education that is responsive to the region and South Africa’s needs, and which is also in tune with the global village.
