Introduction

Hamad bin Khalifa University (HBKU), a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community Development (QF), has been established to continue fulfilling QF’s vision of unlocking human potential. HBKU is an emerging research university building its foundation upon innovative and unique collaborations with local and international partners.

Located within Education City on the western edge of Doha, the capital city of Qatar, HBKU seeks to provide unparalleled opportunities where inquiry and discovery are integral to teaching and learning at all levels, combining the riches of Arab culture with international perspectives. Master's in Sustainable Energy The HBKU Sustainable Energy master’s and Ph.D. programs provide students with extensive knowledge in topics related to sustainable energy and the impact urbanization, transportation and manufacturing have on energy sustainability. The programs also looks at the implications and drivers of sustainable policymaking on society, the economy and the environment. A key component for both degrees is original, guided research in energy science and technologies that support sustainable development. The multidisciplinary approach to the curricula allows for engagement in cross-disciplinary science and builds fundamental knowledge that evolves with the developments within the energy field, equipping graduates with the tools needed to pursue a wide variety of career. Admissions requirements Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree relevant to this program, which typically includes science and engineering. Additionally, backgrounds in economic, business, policy, and social sciences will be considered. Applicants should demonstrate strong evidence supporting the prospect that they will become successful researchers and professionals. These include excellent performance in relevant coursework, past research results if any, and strong recommendation letters. Applicants with prior research experience are preferred. Applicants are required to take the IELTS or TOEFL exam in order to demonstrate their proficiency in English. Applicants who are fluent in English may be exempt from this requirement. While not required for the master’s programs the GRE exam is recommended and will strengthen an applicant’s submission. Applicants coming from an economics, policy and other social science background may submit results of the GMAT exam as an alternative to the GRE. The MS in Islamic Finance is a specialized program that teaches qualitative and quantitative methods in the analysis of both Islamic and conventional finance. The innovative new program has been developed in order to offer students a unique opportunity to enjoy a strong multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary graduate education across a range of core subjects, while also enabling them to pursue specialist study in one of a range of important areas within the field of Islamic Finance. The mixed philosophy of the program enables graduates to attain the skills needed to understand the global financial system and proposing viable alternatives to existing models by blending guidance from Shariah with the modern scientific knowledge and techniques of economics and finance. This popular master’s program is one of an extremely limited number of top-tier specialized Islamic Finance programs globally. Program Focus: Islamic banking in Qatar constitutes approximately 25% of the local banking activity. The MS in Islamic Finance program is focused on giving graduate students a greater understanding of the practical business applications of Shariah. By emphasising practical as well as theoretical aspects of Islamic finance, students learn to become better prepared to address the global opportunities of conducting business and finance. The acquisition of practical translation competence is complemented by advanced training in the use of translation technology and work placement experience. A theoretical component encourages sophisticated intellectual enquiry, thus equipping students with a sound foundation for professional work and doctoral study in the field of translation studies. The program is tailored to examine traditional Islamic knowledge and place such knowledge in the context of the challenges faced in modern society. Although Islamic Studies is a discipline that is widely taught in universities across the world, the blended combination of specialties and research offered at HBKU is unique. Program Focus: The MA in Islamic Studies program covers Islamic knowledge sources and addresses the role they play in understanding and addressing pressing issues in the contemporary world. The program uniquely focuses on teaching the skills required to produce graduates with exceptional knowledge of Islam in the modern context and significant critical ability. It develops graduates who can practice the values of moderation and understanding in order to respond positively to the modern challenges of pluralism and globalization.
