University of Minho - Institute of Social Sciences

Introduction

Since the founding of the University, ICS actively participated in the launch of bachelor courses, undergraduate and master's degree in the fields of History, Archaeology, Sociology, Communication Sciences, Anthropology and Geography. It currently has a student population of about 800 students spread over five degrees - Archaeology; Computer Science; Geography and Planning; History and Sociology. It also has under its responsibility 644 students graduate, 415 Masters and 229 PhD.

The Institute is organized into Departments and Research Centers, integrating the Departments of Communication Science, History, Geography and Sociology. Research and other specialized services within the social sciences developed in under three research units: Study Center of Communication and Society (CECS); Centre for Research in Social Sciences (CICS) and Transdisciplinary Research Centre Culture, Space and Memory (CITCEM).

Present in both campuses of the University of Minho, the Institute works in the Campus of Gualtar, in Braga, which is based on the Presidency and the Departments of Communication Science, History and Sociology, as well as the corresponding educational projects and research units. On Campus Azurém does the Department of Geography.

This program intends to continue the training received in Communication Sciences graduation and, at the same time, to deepen and promote new knowledge and skills in the most significant areas of Communication Sciences. [+]

Academic degree: Master ECTS: 120 Duration: 4 curricular semesters Regime: After Working Hours Place: Gualtar Campus, Braga Main Scientific area: Communication Sciences This program intends to continue the training received in Communication Sciences graduation and, at the same time, to deepen and promote new knowledge and skills in the most significant areas of Communication Sciences. Teaching and learning are structured to encourage a progressive empowerment of students, creating conditions for closer contact with the professional contexts. It also seeks to develop the theoretical and methodological framework suitable to the development of research activities on the field. Special attention is given to the ethical dimensions of communication, which should characterize not only the content but also the work processes, becoming the main culture in the relationship between all the actors. The course is organized in three areas of specialization: Audiovisual and Multimedia; Information and Journalism; Advertising and Public Relations. The program’s 2nd year consists of a single curricular unit corresponding to Internship and Final Report. Students can choose to do the internship and report on a company from the business area of the respective specialization or an internship and Report on a research project, by choosing one of the research projects which integrate the Professors of the Communication and Society Research Centre. The course focuses on flexibility, on scientific interdisciplinarity and on the enhancement of Sociologist skills as an adequate response to the challenges and contemporary problems, especially those arising from the economic and social changes promoted by globalization. It is in pursuit of this line of objectives that the Master is divided into three areas of specialization: (1) Culture, Leisure and Tourism; (2) Social Policies; (3) and Organizations and Labor.
