Introduction

Gdańsk University of Technology (Polish: Politechnika Gdańska) is a technical university in Gdańsk-Wrzeszcz, and one of the oldest universities in Poland. It has nine faculties and with 41 fields of study and more than 26 thousand undergraduate, as well as about 400 doctoral students. It currently employs 2500 people, including 1200 academic teachers. The rector of the university is professor Henryk Krawczyk. Gdańsk University of Technology is also one of the most popular universities among young people. The fifth time in a row it came in the second place in the ministerial ranking measuring the popularity of the university among candidates to study. GUT graduates easily find a job after graduation, often successfully create and run their own businesses. It is important to stress the fact that, according to a nationwide survey, earnings of Gdańsk University of Technology graduates are in the third place among graduates in the country. During the recent years, Gdańsk University of Technology has made many changes, both preserving the tradition of a technical university and being open for economic and social demands. University is now facing transformation: from a digital university into a SMART university, realizing new international projects and innovative incentives. Great emphasis is placed on maintaining high education quality standards. GUT is the first and only Polish university to be a member of the CDIO Initiative, founded by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden. CDIO aims to provide an education for engineers that enables them to “Conceive, Design, Implement and Operate” pro-industrial technological systems. GUT is an active member of a number of university networks and associations, e.g. Baltic Science Research (coordination of nanotechnology research and education), Baltic University Network (Uppsala Protocol) and the Baltic Sea Region University Network. Gdańsk University of Technology is a university with a long tradition of research, and in the current year it has been celebrating its 111th anniversary. In its development strategy the university focuses on broad cooperation on a global scale, because it is an important factor of progress.
