HKU University of the Arts Utrecht is at the heart of Utrecht’s cultural and student life. With over 4000 students, HKU is one of the largest schools of art in Europe. We offer preparatory courses, bachelor and master programmes and research degrees in fine art, design, media, games and interaction, music, theatre and arts management.

Programmes

HKU University of the Arts Utrechts is internationally oriented and involved in numerous international programmes and projects. The HKU maintains contact with almost 200 educational institutions abroad for the purpose of exchanging lecturers, students and projects. Almost 20% of the students come from outside the Netherlands. Foreign students can attend the HKU as a regular student, an exchange student in programmes such as Socrates/Erasmus, a bilateral exchange programme or as an MA, MPhil or PhD student.

Master of MusicWithin the Master of Music at HKU University of the Arts Utrecht, you have the opportunity to develop further as an instrumentalist, vocalist or composer. You do this by drawing up and following your own personal study plan. In this study plan, you choose a pathway and describe what you want to focus on. Fixed components of the course are practice-oriented research and an internship.

 

The Master of Music is a two-year full-time course. It is also possible to follow the Master of Music part-time. The part-time programme takes 4 years. The Master of Music has 2 pathways: Performance and Music Design.

MA Fine Art

The one-year Fine Arts programme at maHKU consists of three parallel courses: Discipline, critical studies and your individual research project, creating an optimal mix of fine art and theoretical research. [+]

This is MaHKU

MaHKU is the working title of the one-year Master programme of the Utrecht Graduate School of Visual Art and Design. MaHKU comprises five disciplines, i.e. Editorial Design, Fashion Design, Fine Art, Interior Design, and Public Space Design.

We offer an MA curriculum both discipline specific and interdisciplinary entailing a mixture of provocative seminars and workshops.

 

MaHKU is accredited by the Open University in London. Upon successful completion of the Master programme you earn the internationally acknowledged title of Master of Arts (MA).

 

Master programmes in art and design focus on a research-based process of creation. As a Master student, you critically reflect on the boundaries of your discipline through research methodologies, a variety of theoretical discourses, and interdisciplinary activities. Are you a visual artist, a theatre designer, a theatre maker or director, a performance designer, a visual dramaturg, a multimedia artist, an architect or spatial designer, a curator of events, involved in scenographic art practice in any other way or ambitious to be so? Are you eager to develop your work through practice and research?On the Master of Fine Arts in Scenography programme at HKU Theatre, you WORK, THINK and SHARE.Master Scenography students at HKU Theatre are trained to transform any environment into a theatrical surrounding, through supervising and stimulating the development of their creative and intellectual capabilities. The course is suitable for students who have just completed their Bachelor’s degree and are capable of conducting research independently and in a broad context, as well as for artists who have already been working as professionals at Bachelor’s level for several years.
