Latvia University of Agriculture is the only higher agricultural education establishment in Latvia and it aims to: promote intellectual potential for rural development in agriculture; encourage young people to acquire higher academic and professional education; develop research; contribute to the cultural development; study, maintain and perfect the gained experience from the Latvian people and pass it over to the future generations.

The university is multi-profiled. Besides the traditional study fields, LLU also provides multiform unique study programmes related with advanced agriculture, veterinary medicine, food production, forestry and landscape architecture.

The university is located in Jelgava - an old cultural city which is only 40 km from the capital of Latvia - Riga. Jelgava is recognized as a true student city.

Mission & Vision

The Latvia University of Agriculture (LLU) Strategic Development Plan 2015-2020, was developed during 2015 and approved by the LLU Senate on December 9, 2015.

In order to perform its functions and implement its goals and objectives, the Latvia University of Agriculture has developed three activity programs:

  1. Studies
  2. Science
  3. Administrative and financial support for studies and research work

The goal of the Latvia University of Agriculture is to provide the possibility to obtain higher academic and higher professional education in agriculture, veterinary medicine, food technology, engineering, forestry science, social science, information technologies and environment management sectors as well as to develop science and to maintain and develop the Latvian intellectual potential and culture.

The objectives of the LLU:

1.To ensure the study quality corresponding with the standards of a national university what would allow to educate competitive specialists for the Latvian and international labor markets.

2.To develop the scientific potential to participate in international research, to integrate the academic education and research what would ensure introduction of innovative, knowledge - based technologies into the Latvian national economy, specially, in the Zemgale region.

3.To ensure sustainable development for the university as a national education, science and culture institution:

  • to strengthen the legal basis;
  • to improve the organizational structure in accordance
  • to the LLU objectives;to develop cooperation with institutions, academic education and science institutions in Latvia and abroad, enterprises and professional organizations and regional institutions of Zemgale;
  • to manage the LLU material and technical basis effectively.

  • Latvia University of Agriculture (LLU) was founded in 1939 and its oldest faculty is the Faculty of Agriculture, founded in 1863, which has close cooperation with many universities abroad. LLU has been a rapidly growing institution in the time period since Latvia regained its independence.
  • There are 8 faculties in the university: Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine, Engineering, Food Technology, Environment and Civil Engineering, Forest, Information Technologies, Economics and Social Development.

These are highly qualified specialists who apply their knowledge and skills in inventing various devices and mechanisms for the improvement of production technologies as well as build houses, connect the banks of rivers, solve specific engineering communication issues making the environment more comfortable and functional. The higher education has a significant role in providing the necessary knowledge, educating knowledgeable and capable engineers in various spheres of economy, integrating modern production technologies in the study process, promoting competitiveness of engineers in the local and international market. Technical Faculty welcomes students who are keen on technologies and innovations. Master in Food Science The masters program "Food Science" is offered by the Faculty of Food Technology, that, since the establishment in 1948, has trained more than 5,000 food and hospitality industry specialists for professional career and life; they are now successfully working in food manufacturing companies, government institutions, scientific research and vocational education institutions, as well as running their own businesses. The faculty offers dynamic studies in a modern environment, as well as possibilities to improve knowledge and skills in companies and in partner universities as Latvia, as abroad. Academic profile The programme is aimed to educate academically educated specialists and new scientists with creative thought and competence to make decisions for promoting future development of food science and food production in Europe, competitiveness in foreign markets. The Master study programme covers food product structure-mechanical properties, food sensory evaluation, sensory and consumer science, regulation of biochemical processes in human body, functional properties of food, natural substances in food system, food shelf-life analysis, development tendencies in nutrition science, genetically modified food, physical-and-chemical properties and metrology, food additive application, in food safety and identification of microorganisms, quality systems in food circulation, food system innovative development, entrepreneurship and marketing, perspective solutions in food packaging. Master in Forest Ecology and Silviculture The use and further processing of forest and timber resources play the main role in the economics of Latvia. Forestry is the third biggest branch of the Latvian national economy, and is the second biggest producing branch, which continuously develops. As evidence for this development could be mentioned the increasing number of timber export, which in 2011 comprised 18% of the total state export and 6% of gross domestic product. Moreover forestry is the only branch which has a positive export balance. The use of forest resources is regulated in a way to observe sustainable and non-impoverishing forest management principles. It is supervised by the forestry branch specialists – graduates of the Forestry Faculty. The Forest Faculty is the only higher education establishment in Latvia, which offers education in the forestry – knowledge about forest management and wood products, their production and sale. Distance probing laboratory has been established within the Faculty, and it is a modern forest evaluation laboratory in Latvia. The Forest and Wood Products Research and Development Institute has been established in cooperation with the Faculty; it implements the integration of education, science and industry, thus fostering the growth of forestry branch in Latvia. Master in Information Technology Nowadays, development of all the branches dealing with economic and scientific activities is tightly connected with the use of information technologies, which set additional requirements to the employees. Besides the basic skills of computer literacy, the necessity to carry out complicated research and modeling of business processes, to solve tasks of systemic analysis, as well as to work out an unconventional use of information technologies in the production computer management, biotechnology, medicine, ecology and other fields, become of vital importance. To fulfill these tasks, well prepared specialists – experts of computer networks, programmers, system analysts and other professionals, who are able to adjust to rapid changes in the branch of information technologies, are needed more and more. Faculty of Information Technologies is the newest and one of the most modern faculties of the University, which trains specialists for practical and scientific work in the field of information technologies. The Faculty prepares specialists of computer management and computer sciences, programmers and scientific researchers in the field of information technologies. Up-to-date computer rooms with the latest equipment are used for the studies. The first doctoral students here were admitted in 2006, and the first doctoral thesis in the area of information technologies was defended in 2012. Faculty of Rural Engineering is the second biggest faculty of the University, where new engineers - construction, environment and water management specialists, land surveyors, as well as landscape designers and planners, are prepared. At the faculty there are four scientific laboratories and two of them are located in advanced two storey premises, which allows the use of all the functional possibilities. Students at the Faculty work with up-to-date equipment, thus having an opportunity to comprehend causalities existing in the nature and to apply them in a particular task in their future work.

Land surveying

The Faculty of Rural Engineering has good reason to be proud both of its students and graduates - land surveyors, whose work is familiar to almost every inhabitant of the Latvian countryside, when solving questions regarding property, borders and inheritance. The growth in the demand for land surveying, cadastre and territorial planning specialists, results in an increase in the number of land surveying profession students who acquire knowledge of land surveying, cartography, photogrammetry, geographical information systems, real estate cadastre and evaluation, land law, territorial planning and land surveying design. Students strengthen their theoretical knowledge in the field and professional practices. Students are provided with geodesic instruments necessary for the practice, which give an opportunity to acquire skills of using the latest land surveying instruments and technologies. Graduates of the land surveying profession are employed by the State Land Service and other governmental institutions, land surveying and real estate appraisal companies, as well as town and regional municipalities.... Master in Sociology of Organizations and Public Administration The current economic trends in Latvia and Europe highlight the necessity of highly qualified specialists and researchers in economics, management and sociological research who could work in innovative enterprises and institutions promoting competitiveness of Latvia in the global and local market. The skills obtained at the faculty are particularly necessary for entrepreneurs since, in addition to organizing the production or providing services and managing employees of the company, they have to be well aware of accounting and taxation requirements, financing and crediting issues, funding conditions at the national or the EU level, as well as project management. All this knowledge is provided by the study programmes of economics, management and sociology. The Faculty of Economics and Social Development was formed in 2013 uniting the pedagogical and scientific potential of two faculties – the Faculty of Economics with its 45 years long history and the Faculty of Social Sciences with its 12 years long history, becoming currently the largest faculty of the university and providing studies at all levels – the undergraduate (including the branches of Sigulda and Laidze), master and doctoral level.
