Introduction

MICO UNIVERSITY COLLEGE

is registered by the University Council of Jamaica ( UCJ ) to provide teacher education at the graduate degree level. It should be noted that this programme is approved by the University Council of Jamaica ( UCJ ).

Graduate Degrees

The Mico School of Graduate Studies has a mandate to make dynamic contributions to the academic landscape by producing highly skilled educators, leadership personnel, policy makers and problem solvers.

Collaborating with the Institute of Technological and Educational Research (ITER), the School of Graduate Studies seeks to promote and coordinate a quality enterprise that offers graduate, advanced graduate and professional programmes of study, conduct research and provide service to the public in accordance with our mission.

Currently the School offers four (4) Graduate Programmes:

  • The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)
  • The Executive Masters in Educational Management (EMEM) (some courses are taught by The Mona School of Business)
  • Master in Special Education
  • M.Sc Counselling & Social Work

Tuition & Fees

Tuition is charged per credit with rates subject to change annually. Compulsory University fees are added for miscellaneous items. Students are required to make payments in full, but a payment plan is usually available from the Accounts Department. The current fee per credit is $16,000.00 and students are expected to pursue a minimum of 9 credits per semester.

Entry Requirements

  1. Must have at least a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and may be a: -Trained graduate – degree with teacher training or -Pre-trained graduate- degree without teacher training
  2. Official Transcripts from all previously attended Colleges and Universities.
  3. Two letters of recommendation: one from an administrator or other personnel who can attest to the applicant’s performance and attitude to work.
  4. Any other qualifications that may be considered appropriate by the University College Admissions Board.
  5. Current Employment record.
  6. Written one page paper of intent and statement on ‘What it means to be a Leader in an Organization, in this Era.’

The application is an important part of the University’s record and should be completed carefully and accurately. Incomplete application forms may result in refusal.

Master of Science: Counselling and Social Work M.S.c Counselling and Social Work Credits Required: 51 The Master of Science in Counselling and Social Work is designed to equip society with skills to respond to the needs of the school community and society as a whole. In response to social changes that impact the lives of students, this programme prepares professionals who will focus on a broad range of services to an increasingly diverse group of stakeholders. The programme targets persons with a Bachelor’s Degree in social and behavioral studies and covers two (2) years, including summer sessions. RATIONALE In order to prepare students, parents and the society to meet and effectively deal with the existing societal challenges, The Mico University College has undertaken to train change agents. This programme intends to prepare individuals to be school counselors and social agents who will be well informed and motivated. OBJECTIVES Upon completion of the Master of Science in School Counselling and Social Work, graduates will be able to: Effectively engage in counseling children, their families and other individuals and groups. Use knowledge and skills gained through research, lectures, seminars and practical experiences to implement counselling programmes in schools and communities. Model and display a high level of professionalism through effective communication, team work, confidentiality, empathy and personal development. Assess, interpret and treat students, recognize and respect differences in culture, values, and backgrounds. Explore contemporary issues in child therapy and be equipped with a sound under-standing of child and adolescent development. Provide leadership to schools and community agencies in the areas of child development through: Professional development, workshops, Seminars , Conferences, etc. Implement programmes to address the emotional, physical, social and financial needs of children, parents and others . OVERVIEW The Master of Science Degree in School Counselling and Social Work is designed to equip school counsellors with the skills and knowledge which are relevant locally, regionally and globally. Participants will be equipped with the necessary strategies and competencies to effectively impact children and adults holistically, bringing about meaningful changes to their lives. Candidates will be exposed to the diversity and uniqueness of students, clients, their families and communities to foster their empowerment. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS A completed admission application form. Official transcripts from all previously attended colleges and universities. Proof of valid bachelor's degree (Certificate) Two letters of recommendation: One should be from School Administrator, who can attest to the applicants' performance and attitude to work. A Personal Statement of Purpose/ Development Goals (250 words) typed doublespaced,font size 12. Prospective students will be invited to participate in an interview. All successful applicants will be expected to attend mandatory counseling sessions with a certified counsellor. Report from the session will form a part of the candidates' record and profile. Executive Master in Educational Management (EMEM) EMEM Credits Required: 42 The Executive Master of Arts Degree in Educational Management will dynamically change the educational management leadership landscape. It provides human, technical, administrative and organizational values and skills necessary for first rate performance. The curriculum is structured to provide incremental exposure to foundation and advanced courses integrated around core themes of Management, Leadership, Creativity and Innovation. Participants must first complete Foundational courses before core courses are pursued. OVERVIEW The Executive Masters Degree in Educational Management offered, will dynamically change the educational management leadership landscape of Jamaica, the Caribbean and international communities. It provides human, technical administrative and organizational skills and values necessary for first rate performance. The curriculum is structured to provide incremental exposure to foundation and advanced courses integrated around core themes of Management, Leadership Creativity and Innovation. A wide variety of learning methods is used for EMEM from formal lectures, case study analysis, seminars and class presentations. The programme requires extensive private study and research enquiry on the part of the students. Study and learning in the EMEM are broadly interactive processes with emphasis on the value student participation brings to the classroom. The strategy is to encourage and facilitate both effective self-reflection and the sharing of ideas among participants. The programme commences with Summer Foundational courses, and covers 42 credits over twenty (20) months period. TARGET GROUPS The EMEM is dedicated to meeting the needs of school administrators and other leadership personnel such as: Principals; Vice Principals; Senior Personnel in schools, colleges, universities and other government and corporate agencies; Classroom Teachers with aspiration for leadership. DURATION The programme is scheduled for a period of twenty (20) months, part-time. Students shall normally register for a mini-mum of six credits per semester. DELIVERY MODALITY The programme is delivered through the blended learning mode on both The Mico University College Campus and the Mona School of Business University of the West Indies Campus. PHILOSOPHY The Master of Arts in teaching programme seeks to empower educators for professional practice and responsible leadership through a rich, varied and dynamic curriculum and provides a higher degree pro-gramme that will enable the clientele to engage in continued research activities that contribute to sustain-able development. RATIONALE The present realities of education as a vehicle for sustainable development require a new approach in educating professionals who are reflective, articulate, resourceful, creative and goal-oriented. This view is based on the premise that the education of the twenty first century and beyond must be functional and relevant to the needs, challenges and changes around us. The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) programme is a graduate degree programme for all qualified persons who provide training in the fields of education, business, health and other private/public sectors. The MAT is designed to certify candidates in one of three-programme areas; Primary, Secondary and Adult Education. The course work integrates content and pedagogy with strong emphasis on essential teaching competencies. OBJECTIVES The programme: Provides the participants with an understanding of the current trends of creating and using tech-nology for sustainable education. Facilitates critical thinking for the growth and development of education. Exposes participants to a dynamic and integrated curriculum that will empower them to be good education practitioners. Enables the clientele to engage in worthwhile research that will result in increasing educational benefits. Empowers the participants to be involved in the integration of knowledge across fields of study. Provides the kind of environment that will inspire the clientele to become responsible leaders and entrepreneurs in the field of education. Master of Education: Special Education M.Ed. Special Education Credits Required: 42/43 The programme is designed to equip educators and other professionals with core knowledge and specialized skills for addressing the needs of students with exceptionalities. It will also empower educators for professional practice and responsible leadership. The programme addresses a wide range of learning needs, including severe disabilities. It targets persons with a Bachelor’s degree and offers training in general special education that allows the selection of an elective from: Specific Learning Disabilities, Severe Disabilities, School Counselling, and Social Work, Family and Human Development, Educational Evaluation and Interventions and Administration and Supervision. Objectives As a result of training the teacher will be able to: Identify the specific learning problems of learners Demonstrate knowledge and skills in content areas of spe-cial education Develop specific lessons to focus on the learning needs of children with diverse abilities Create learner-centred teaching strategies in specific con-tent areas Describe the role of special education and the special edu-cation teacher in maximizing potentials to the highest level that is possible Show appreciation for team effort and collaboration, and work to foster these with related and resource personnel to ensure student achievement Demonstrate knowledge and skills in counselling ap-proaches and strategies for working with parents and fami-lies Engage in disciplined inquiry with the exploration of five broad models for research in special education, namely: literature review, case study, programme evaluation, experi-mental study and classroom-based action research. Advocate for and on behalf of individuals with exceptional-ities to enable social, educational and personal benefits comparable to that of their peers without exceptionalities.
