Università Iuav di Venezia

Introduction

Università Iuav di Venezia

One of the first Architecture Schools in Italy (established in 1926), the Università Iuav di Venezia is a ‘themed’ university totally focusing on design. It is a dedicated place for teaching, specialisation and field research in design of living space and environments such as buildings, cities, landscapes, regions as well as design of every-day use objects, cultural, theatrical, multimedia events, fashion and graphics.

The Università Iuav di Venezia is organised into three departments: “Architecture, Construction and Conservation”, "Design and Planning in Complex Environments”, "Architecture and Arts".

Educational programmes, courses and activities are divided into 5 undergraduate degree programmes and 8 graduate degree programmes that are project-driven in fields of architecture, design, fashion, visual arts, urban and regional planning, theatre, in addition to a number of postgraduate specialisation programmes, advanced specialisation courses and 9 research doctorates.

Iuav has successfully devised a unique learning mode that is especially suitable to transmitting project knowledge: workshops are in fact a real workshop for experiencing and learning under the direct guidance of high-calibre professionals and professors in the practice and design teaching fields.

The University has entered into agreements with a number of institutions and cultural subjects in Venice, in the region and abroad (La Biennale di Venezia, Teatro La Fenice, Palazzo Grassi, Musei Civici Veneziani, teatro Due di Parma, theatres in Rome and Turin, Triennale di Torino, Philadelphia Museum, New York University, MIT of Boston) that involved and still involve students in artistic, design and theatrical productions.

Iuav invests a lot in research concerning issues related to the city, region and environment, landscape, infrastructure and mobility, protection and conservation, sustainable design, history of architecture, the new frontiers of design, arts and theatre.

The University boasts a system of studios equipped with high specialist equipment and expertise, also made available to external clients, along with a library heritage within the architecture and urban planning fields that is a crucial point of reference on a national basis.

About 6,000 students attend this University (admission to the various degree programmes is limited, which is an essential requirement needed to guarantee teaching quality). International Exchange Programmes are currently being offered in cooperation with 130 European Universities for the promotion of students’, researchers’ and faculty’s mobility, with a view to developing a common European citizenship, exchange of good practices and sharing of researches. Furthermore, the Università Iuav di Venezia has also established cooperation and exchange relationships with non-EU institutions and universities with which has entered into over 60 agreements aiming at students’ mobility.

Studying at the Iuav means living in an environment that is open to what is happening throughout the world. It means coming face-to-face with authoritative voices in the fields of architecture, regional planning, arts and design: Le Corbusier, Louis Kahn, Frank Lloyd Wright, Carlo Scarpa, Carlo Aymonino, Manfredo Tafuri, Vittorio Gregotti, Gino Valle, Aldo Rossi, Giovanni Astengo, Giancarlo De Carlo, Tadao Ando, and Richard Serra have all been part of our school’s history.

Erasmus Mundus Master Course on Maritime Spatial Planning (EMMCMSP)Erasmus Mundus Master Course on Maritime Spatial Planning (EMMCMSP) is a two-years advanced professional master program, in which three high-rated European universities participate: Università Iuav di Venezia as coordinator, University of Sevilla, University of Azores. Students will familiarize themselves with key issues involved in policies formulation and planning strategies for maritime space, to improve the management of resources from an environmental, economic, social and legal perspective within the framework of Maritime policies.Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) is an innovative instrument based on up-to-date knowledge and technologies to study the planet’s surface, striving to improve the management of global resources. Today planners, who traditionally dealt with the transformation of cities, territories, environments and related issues must face new marine challenges, and therefore play a fundamental role. Though for years the planning system has ‘turned its back to the sea’ it is pivotal in organizing and developing coastal areas beyond the CZM approach. The sea is affected by economic, social and environmental changes and, in order to cope with the continuing social and economic evolution, it needs to be included in planning and land management strategies. The aim of the EMMCMSP is to prepare students to become specialists – providing a multi-disciplinary background – to enable them to operate both in public institutions as well as independent professionals or researchers. As specialists they will have the know-how in planning, in designing and evaluating projects and policies, which consider terrestrial, coastal and marine dimensions. In addition, the course will provide the ability to manage decision processes towards an adaptive and integrated approach. The two-years master course provides a broad study perspective  through a crossed-thematical analysis and discussion on several marine contexts (Mediterranean Sea, Baltic and North Sea, Black Sea, Atlantic Ocean). The added value consists in the comparative analysis and the methodological interaction among the institutions involved, together with knowledge transfer to the South of the World.Structure of the MasterWith respect to the structure of the master, two terms (6+6 months) will be held in Seville (Spain) and in Azores (Portugal). Students can choose to develop their six-months Internships (third term) among the consortium affiliated members. The last term (6 months in Venice, Italy) consists in the elaboration of group projects in specific case study areas. Classes will be given in English and local languages. At the successful completion of the EMMCMSP program students will be awarded a jointly conferred master’s degree of “Erasmus Mundus Master in Maritime Spatial Planning” (120 ECTS) automatically recognized in the countries of all consortium partners.... Educational objectives and didactic structure

The European Postgraduate Masters in Urbanism (EMU) is a joint program that aims to produce highly qualified, university trained urban designers, physical planners and researchers. The EMU program brings together the strengths and richness of different design approaches and methods, and the long traditions and experiences in urban planning and design of each of the participating universities. The master course is design oriented and affirms the role of design in the knowledge process, while integrating different levels of scale. Learning by doing, research by design, and the project as knowledge producer constitute the key concerns and standpoints of this European postgraduate master’s degree.   The programme relies upon a series of steps in the design process common design approaches – the main operations through which research/design can be configured as knowledge producer. - Research/design through Description
 - Research/design through Conceptualization
 - Research/design through Technical Interventions
 - Research/design through Strategies and Scenarios... [-]
