Programme profile The international Master of ArtsMIREES is a Second cycle Joint Degree (120 ECTS), jointly awarded by the School ofPolitical Sciences of the University of Bologna - Forlì Campus, Vytautas Magnus University at Kaunas; Corvinus University of Budapest; Saint-Petersburg State University. MIREES is an innovative graduate program, taught entirely in English, unique in Italy and Europe, devoted to students that have a BA background in Economics, Politics, International Relations, History, Agricultural or Cultural studies at large. MIREES main characteristics are based on (1) an international Faculty(provided by partnership); (2) an international students' environment (provided by an internationally wide students' enrollment); (3) a compulsory students'mobility within the partnership; (4) a strong research component; (5) language skills; (6) interdisciplinarity; (7) a wide and intensive methodology aimed to encourage active participation and to provide organizational, analytical, multifunctional,cross-cultural mindset skills and empathy towards the geopolitical Area of specialization. Indeed, the main educational goals of MIREES Program are inspired by a comprehensive rationale, marked by the following: Providing a specialized, in-depth regional knowledge of the Post-socialist Countries intransition, the new EU member States after the Enlargements of 2004 and 2007, as well as the New East-European Neighbor Countries; Encouraging an interdisciplinary approach, able to encompass economic, social, political and cultural studies and understand their interaction and interdependency; Invigorating analytical skills with language expertise and transnational mobility,in order to get access to primary sources, strengthen the empathic approach to the area of studies and diversities on the basis of the 1996 UNESCO report “Learning the Treasure Within” and its four pillars of education applied to MIREES peculiarities (i.e. Learning to know: the Area studies; Learning to do: analytical, research, organizational and other skills as reported in the above boxes; Learning to Live Together: thanks to mobility, international environment and cross-cultural communication; Learning to Be: building a strong sense of social responsibility to public and common goals in terms of trust, knowledge and cooperation). Equipping the students with multifunctional abilities through an educational 2-years program, whose disciplinary learning goals are expended by a set of proficiencies in terms of work organization, respect of deadlines, multiple obligations to fulfill, dynamic life experiences, transnational and cross-cultural commitments and challenges. Thanks to these comprehensive learning goals, MIREES combines an academic approach with professional training, forging potential insightful consultants, analysts, and managers as Area Experts for international agencies, public administrations, Ministries and EU institutions, private and public companies, NGOs, and Research and Study Centers, while also offering a solid basis for further academic studies at the PhD level. Students are expected to attend the first semester of the second year in one of the following partner Universities for at least 5-6months: Vytautas Magnus University at Kaunas, Corvinus University of Budapest, Saint Petersburg State University. The student mobility can be carried out also at an associated partner University, on the basis of separate specific agreements, including the Universities of Ljubljana, Belgrade, Marmara and NewBulgarian. The mobility is an integral part of the student teaching program and is aimed at carrying out educational activities in order to fulfill the required number of University credits as well as the research activities related to the master's thesis. Living and studying for a semester in a MIREES PartnerUniversity allow students to combine knowledge, fieldwork, and concrete experience on the ground. In addition, they will become aware of the importance of learning different languages (even less used or taught languages) and perspectives in order to get access to local primary sources, to become more open-minded and tolerant in the context of multilingual and multicultural Europe, to acquire an insightful empathy towards the Area for his/her own interest. As a result, they will be better prepared in managing differences, cross-cultural communication, transnational interaction as well as in rooting a sense of co-ownership of the process of European integration. Therefore, as soon as the 1st and 2nd term are spent in Italy, where in any case the Faculty is international and provided by the partner Universities, MIREES students can experience their mobility and attend courses in the 3rd semester in another academic institutions after the period of study in Italy. The selection of the University partner for the mobility period is to be negotiated with the MIREES International AcademicBoard (IAB) on the basis of the following: The teaching plan and the thesis project The student's skills developed during the first year of study in Forlì and motivation (including language skills) The number of available exchange places offered by the hosting University. MIREES mobility is provided by theLLP/Erasmus, by the Erasmus Mundus External Cooperation Window and by theMIREES Mobility Scheme (MMS, for European countries or students who are not eligible to the LLP/Erasmus scholarships) or by any other bilateral agreement with the University of Bologna. Exceptions might be considered by the IAB and involve the Associate partners' Universities. One of the main peculiarities of MIREES program is its research component.Particularly, students are strongly encouraged to improve their research and data processing skills by collecting essential sources for their thesis work in the geo-political field as well as in the selected disciplinary field through fieldworks. This is one of the main task of their mobility experience in one of the Partner Universities during the 3rd semester. In other words, students are expected to take benefit from their mobility by deepening their knowledge while visiting their geopolitical area of specialization, and by doing fieldwork research. Moreover, in order to strengthen the research dimension, a compulsory methodological seminar is foreseen during the second year (between February andMarch), when students are expected to present a work-in-progress of their thesis research, including research questions, bibliography, and one chapter to an international Commission of Mirees professors. These work-in-progress seminars take place in the Universities were students spend their mobility and in Forlì, for those who are spending the mobility in Associated Universities.Furthermore, during the second year, students are warmly invited to apply to apply and submit paper proposals to international convention: if included in panels they can compete for a MIREES grant. The 4th semester, when no teaching activity is scheduled, is completely devoted to the thesis writing and implementation. Finally, during the whole academic year and for the purpose of expanding its range of cultural activities, MIREES organizes or promotes together with other subjects, many extra-curricular activities (in particular conferences, seminars, workshops, book presentations, cinema events, summer schools) on topics relating to the challenges of modern society in political, historical, economic and sociological thought concerning the Eastwardenlargement of EU, relationships with new neighbors and the changes taking place in Central, Eastern Europe and the Balkans.
