POLI.design is a Consortium of the Politecnico di Milano operating in the field of design acting as an interface between universities, companies, and professional organizations, institutions and bodies.

It develops training programmes for young graduates and professionals, as well as training programmes for companies that are closely focussed on innovation. It operates from the perspective of internationalisation, establishing partnerships of purpose with universities, schools, bodies, institutions, enterprises, and companies on a case by case basis.

The cornerstone of POLI.design lies in the disciplines of design and of the related professions. This dimension of design is broader and more systematic than ever; it takes on strategic importance and contrasts not just with the product dimension, but also the dimension of communication, services, spaces, fashion, and events.

It is a flexible structure that draws on the deep reservoir of internal skills at the Politecnico di Milano. It puts advanced teaching and research methods to the test, consolidates and anticipates the professional skills needed to adapt to the new demands of a society undergoing a radical transformation, and brings the supply of training and research developed in a university context into line with the demand for innovation present in the world of production and in society. POLI.design is a Consortium with many years of experience behind it is part of Milan Polytechnic, through which it has access to the deep reservoir of multidisciplinary skills in the first and most important technical university in Italy.

Together with the Milan Polytechnic School of Design and the Design Department, it forms the Polytechnic Design System, which is a pool of resources, skills, facilities, and laboratories that is among the most important in the world.

The Specializing Master in Color Design and Technology aims to provide advanced training to professionals, so as to enable them to understand and manage the many technological and design issues, often across many disciplinary areas, typical of all those professional and research sectors in which the use and management of color are essential. The Specializing Master in Color Design and Technology aims to provide advanced training to professionals, so as to enable them to understand and manage the many technological and design issues, often across many disciplinary areas, typical of all those professional and research sectors in which the use and management of color are essential. Examples of such production areas include industrial product design, interior architecture, communication, fashion, entertainment and urban planning. Particular attention will be paid to analyzing and summarizing utilization, control, ideation, organization and planning through the use of color. Consequently, color is not treated as a simple attribute of objects or surfaces, but as a means of expression and design underlying perception and interaction with reality. The Specializing Master consists of two phases. The theory and technique based phase aims to train students in the technical aspects of measurement, control, digital reproduction and comparison relating to disciplines such as physics, optics, colorimetry, chemistry, psychology and perception. The second phase focuses on the methods learned, which will be contextualized and experimented with in different color application and design areas such as interior design, urban spaces, industrial products, fashion and communication. Professional Outcomes The Specializing Master aims to produce an innovative professional figure, widely in demand by the market, with advanced technical and design skills concerning color use and control and color design in research and in several sectors such as interior design, urban planning, industrial product design, fashion design and communication. At the end of the course, students will be able to professionally manage multidisciplinary aspects relating to the study and management of color and will be able to work in a variety of firms and companies in the fields of interior design, urban planning, industrial products, fashion, communication, paints and dyes. Degree Awarded After completing the course and on passing the final exam, the 1st level Specializing Master "Color Design & Technology" certification will be issued. The Specializing Master grants 60 CFU, equivalent to 60 ECTS. Didactics Ten didactic units and the internship compose the didactic plan. The first four are dedicated to provide insight into historical, technical, cultural and theoretical knowledge related to the use, measurement and history, to the perception and management of color. The next five have practical nature, aiming to develop the student abilities in designing and using the color in interior, urban space, product design, communication, fashion. Empowerment supports the student's process of personal and professional growth by developing the ability to form relationships and to work successfully in a variety of dynamics. At the end is scheduled an internship in a company in order to transform the skills acquired during the course into practical experience in the field. For foreign applicants, the Specializing Master is open to students holding equivalent qualifications. The number of students admitted is 30. The selection will be made by the Commission. Candidates will be selected after an interview where application form, curriculum vitae and experience will be evaluated. The program was founded to meet the strong demand for training in the pleasure-cratf segment. The yacht's market requires professionals with specialist post-university training. The Master is completely in English. Goals The Specializing Master provides the tools for managing the design and construction of sailing and motor boats, from project brief to definition of general plans, hydrostatic and hydrodynamic calculations, fitting-out of interiors, deck and board equipment, boat systems, production in the yard and control of executive stages. Participation in the Specialising Master allows students to achieve the following training goals: development of planning skills, in particular problem setting and problem solving skills in the leisure boat market; development of specialised technical skills; acquisition of principles and procedures of construction methods and techniques; development of skills related to production organisation and shipyard management; development of the ability to work in a group and to present oneself with authority in the professional world; ability to manage conflicts in the team and to encourage creativity. Professional Outcomes Upon completion of the Specializing Master, students are ready to enter the workforce as specialized professionals, including building on the training prior to entering the program. Over the years, professional outcomes have included assistant designer in specialist design studios, production assistant at shipbuilders, shipyard production manager, and quality-control supervisor. Degree Awarded Upon completion of the Specializing Master, students earn a first-level Politecnico di Milano Specializing Master Degree. Market The need to train people to work in the yachting sector is based on the rapid and exponential growth recorded by this sector in recent years. This growth has been further encouraged by the issuing of provisions to encourage the development of this market (from simplifying procedures for port construction, to reducing the tax burden on recreational boats over 10 m. etc.). For this reason, the sector shows today a strong professional vocation, with regard both to the skills necessary to the design of recreational boats, their components, and accessories, and to the management of the different stages of the production process. In particular, the sector is going through a stage of strong growth and development in quantitative and economic terms, although full maturity has not yet been reached. This lag is explained partly by the current lack of executives able to manage and direct this phase of change. Course Program A ship, whether sailing boat or motoryacht, is a complex product that integrates several systems for propulsion, living quarters, and various accessory functions. Every decision about one of the technical systems (hull, appendages, interior layout, propulsion, onboard equipment) also affects all the others. A yacht, whether made series or as one-off, calls for many different construction techniques and a variety of materials. Its interior will reflect design language and fashion, while market competition tends to imbue every ship with a certain amount of innovation. The Specializing Master takes this complexity into account and intersperses classroom experience – nine learning modules that outline different disciplinary fields – with design exercises and visits to shipyards and companies active in the industry, as well as to applied research institutes. The principles of each field are explained and students acquire the skills to apply what they have learned in their designs. Their various special abilities are brought together in workgroups that are called upon to develop a series of work projects. Duration The Specializing Master lasts one year and is scheduled to start in February 2017. Classroom training represents a commitment of three to four days per week. The internship at a company in the shipbuilding industry or a design studio runs for 392 hours and is performed full time at the end of the classroom training. Learning Modules The course program consists of eight learning modules, plus a design workshop and the internship: Yacht Design: principles, methods, tools and rules, principles, methods, tools and rules of boat design; Design and representation, acquisition of manual and computer tools representing the project; acquisition of specific skills on dedicated software; Naval Architecture, acquisition of the skills needed to manage, during the design stage, know-how relating to: hull geometry, boat statics, resistance to motion, hydrodynamics, hydraulic modelling, fluid dynamics and aero dynamics, turbulence modelling; Shipbuilding, knowledge of the main construction methods, of the properties and characteristics of the materials used in the boats. Understanding and ability to identify innovations with regard to: material technologies and sciences, construction technique; On-board Systems and Propulsion Equipment, ability to understand the issues related to environmental management and acquisition of criteria for the choice of: motor and sail propulsion equipment, steering and monitoring equipment, equipment and fittings for deck, systems and on-board instruments; Interior Design, acquisition of design skills with strong focus on expressiveness with regard to: distribution of space and functional organisation, historic evolution of interior design methods, quality of finishing materials, methods of mock-up for monitoring choices; Production process and corporate organisation, methods and technologies of production of different boat elements and components: organization of production process; Empowerment, during the structuring of the educational programme an empowerment module will be developed, to train participants on the rationale and dynamics of change at the organisational and personal level, teamwork, relational dynamics and entry in the job market; Design workshop, integrated design exercise on topics identified during class. Exercises The Specializing Master integrates a variety of learning modules: metaproject analysis, defining the concept, and design exercises carried out in small groups as prerequisites to the planning workshops. The workshops offer a chance to try out the skills acquired during the learning modules, classroom exercises, and trips outside the classroom. The workshops are an essential part of the training process, which also includes visits to research organizations, production facilities, and professional studios. Internship The internship is required, lasts three months, and is carried out at leading design studios and shipyards. It enables students to transfer skills acquired during the course to a real-life design or production context and to deal with the world of shipbuilding. The training project to be carried out during the internship is agreed upon by the Politecnico di Milano tutor and the company mentor. The Board shall admit applicants who have qualifications in disciplines other than those specified above, if the Master may complete the training of the applicant or the professional skills and experience shown by same. The Master is completely in English: preference will be given to candidates with a good knowledge of English. Admission procedure Admission to the Specializing Master in Yacht Design will depend on a selection process made by the Specializing Master's Board.
