History and Mission

“Know, know how to be, know how to do”. It is on these three cornerstones that IULM University has based its teaching mission, taking inspiration from the principles of UNESCO. Taking strength from its vocation of integrating cultural knowledge and professional competences, the University has from its very inception over 40 years ago always presented itself as a meeting point between the academic world and labour markets.

The Istituto Universitario di Lingue Moderne (I.U.L.M.) was founded in 1968 by the Fondazione Scuola Superiore per Interpreti e Traduttori, under the inspiration of Senator Carlo Bo and Professor Silvio Baridon. From the very beginning the idea behind the project was to satisfy the demands of the labour markets based on analyses of current trends.

The 70's

I.U.L.M., as it was then known, concentrated its attention on the study of languages, an indispensable requirement for entering increasingly international markets and contexts focused on enhancing arts and culture markets.

The 80's

The University was the first in Italy to perceive how the world of communication and the consumer society was evolving, and consequently it saw the need to update its courses by providing a specific series of tools. It is in this period that it founds the Scuola Speciale di Relazioni Pubbliche.

The 90's

The decade that marks the definitive strengthening of the position of the University in the field of communication: the Faculty of Communication and Entertainment Studies is set up alongside the University's first Faculty of Foreign languages and Literature. In 1998 the University takes on its current name: Libera Università di Lingue e Comunicazione IULM.

From 2000 to the present day

While continuing to pay close attention to the dynamics of the world of work, IULM University is also determined in its aim to provide its students with cultural training through innovative courses of study. Founded as a point of reference for teaching in the sectors of languages and communication, it has now also become a centre of excellence in the fields of tourism and the exploitation of cultural heritage. With its 4 Faculties, First Cycle Degree Courses, Second Cycle Degree Courses, numerous Master's Courses and post-experience courses, the University offers a complete range of courses at all levels.

The mission of IULM University is to train and teach professionals capable of taking on the challenges and grasping the opportunities emerging from international markets and scenarios, while also shaping men and women aware of their own being and worth.

International Relations

Know the world to build the future. This is the internationalisation policy of IULM. The University encourages exchanges with foreign universities and companies for students, graduates and teachers.

IULM welcomes many foreign students as well as visiting professors and organises activities under the auspices of European Community projects or in collaboration with inter-university networks to develop educational and research-oriented projects.

This translates into increased possibilities for students to attend lessons and take exams abroad, encouraging them to try new and challenging experiences and pursue that enrichment that comes from a meeting with other cultures. It also gives graduates and undergraduates a chance to reap the benefits of precious and professionally qualifying work experiences. To this end, IULM has also taken part in several relevant projects and is granting scholarships for three- or six-month work experiences in different entrepreneurial fields across Europe.

To facilitate student mobility and the academic recognition of studies abroad, IULM has adopted the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Initially conceived for credit transfer, the ECTS has evolved into an accumulation system to be used at all levels: institutional, regional, national and European.

Another outcome of these activities is the consolidation of the University’s network of relationships with other leading universities in Europe and with many institutions and companies involved in offering work experiences.

GAME/PLAY: Design, direction & production is a brand new Master's program for aspiring designers who believe in a game culture that values diversity, creativity and innovation. Within the context of game design, IULM now offers a groundbreaking one-year, full-time, English-only, studio-based Master Program located in the center of Milan, Italy. The program is designed for students who are interested in creating fresh, inventive, and experimental video games & interactive experiences. A rigorous - and yet playful - concentration on professional practices will lead graduates to advanced work in game design and new media production. Directed by Matteo Bittanti and coordinated by Pietro Righi Riva, GAME/PLAY features some of the most innovative and renowned designers, scholars, and authors working today and who are highly committed to their research, practice, and teaching. GAME/PLAY Design, Direction, and Production provides all the tools and skills needed for the development, distribution, and exhibition of cutting edge video games and interactive experiences. The program’s instructional model is focused on hands-on sessions with accomplished faculty, guest artists, game developers from all over the world, and group critiques with instructors and peers. Students will also take courses in game studies and Game Art that address eclectic critical and aesthetic practices. A truly interdisciplinary program, GAME/PLAY supports collaboration and meaningful exchange between the school's different departments. Completion of the program will earn graduates a Master's Degree from IULM University Over the course of the year (October 2016 - July 2017), students will work individually or in teams to brainstorm, research, design, and develop a digital game which will become their final project to be submitted at international competitions such as the Independent Games Festival, Indiecade, Fantastic Arcade (United States), A MAZE. (Germany), Game On! (Argentina), Gamerz (France), and many more. Moreover, in February 2017, all the enrolled students will travel to San Francisco to visit the annual Game Developers Conference with the Program Coordinator and attend events, workshops, and panels. In addition to their participation in departmental and campus wide events, students will take full advantage of Milan’s rich cultural and artistic offerings: during the academic year, the class will visit several Museums, Foundations, and Galleries, attend workshops, conferences, and talks. Students are also encouraged to participate in game-related events such as jams, exhibitions, competitions, festivals, and workshops taking place in Milan. Let the games begin! Courses The GAME/PLAY Master's consists of nine courses taught by an outstanding faculty. In addition, it features a series of unmissable talks and workshops. GAME SCENES investigates the relationship between art and games, especially digital games. It examines a variety of artistic interventions inspired by video games or explicitly employing game-based digital technology, including the use of patched or modified video games or the re-purposing of existing games and/or game mechanics. GameScenes also examines the influence of gaming - both digital and traditional on painting, sculpture, street and graffiti art, performance, visual culture, and sampling/remix culture. During the course of the semester students will experience and discuss art games, machinima, in-game interventions, and performances, site-specific installations, site-relative mods, but also board games, simulations, and toys. Course topics include sexual and political representation, ideology and politics in game-based artworks, Game Art criticism and the interplay between games and Contemporary Art. Through GAME PRODUCTION students will learn the craft of game development through a series of practical exercises. The class explores the elements common to all games that are fundamental for a game designer working in any format, from sports to board games to computer and video games. Students will invest their time in actual design and production, which will be structured and guided by the instructor. This production time will be supplemented by in-class exercises, readings, and discussion, and talks from visiting artists and game developers. Students will create and tune gaming experiences, introducing students to production roles, play-testing, considerations of audience and platform, and other practical concerns in building games. At the end of the academic year each student or group will have produced a playable digital game. Among the topics covered by GAME PRODUCTION are research, pre-production, production, collaboration, and distribution. Choosing the most appropriate language to express a game design idea is just as important as selecting the most effective technology, or the right marketplace. GAME AESTHETICS provides an introduction to aesthetics in contemporary game development, from interaction dynamics to visual style. It explores all aspects of representation in games - from simulation to abstract play, from photo-realism to low-poly art, from digital expressionism to radical punk aesthetics - providing students valuable experience using various languages, strategies, and methods that can be applied to their projects. The instructor will provide useful reference and will assists students in identifying and achieving their unique style. For evaluating the students’ work-in-progress during the year, the Program adopts the art school format of weekly critiques: both a faculty member and students will participate in constructive, direct, and open discussions about the state of their project. A GAME CRITIQUE is meant to promote both the creative environment and the intellectual context for experimentation. Students are encouraged to thoughtfully challenge the prevailing conventions of digital gaming (both in terms of form and content), develop new forms, and become innovators in playable design. GAME CONTEXTS examines the historical and cultural relevance of play, discusses key characteristics of games, surveys the emergent and interdisciplinary approaches to game design. Particular attention is paid to integrating knowledge and design approaches from other creative fields, such as architecture, fashion design, service design, and contemporary art. Pivotal to the module is the process of helping students develop strategies to explore these approaches for the development and production of their own work. Special attention will be devoted to the evolution of game design as a discipline, and how it interacts with constant changes in design and culture altogether. Each week during the semester, the instructor will introduce and discuss a specific game. Students will be required to play the game and contribute to the discussion. The themes explored in class will subsequently be used for development goals. Game creation and production are multidisciplinary endeavours that benefit from experimentation and the application of innovative techniques and approaches borrowed from science and art. In GAME LAB, students will be introduced to a selection of non-traditional techniques that artists have been using to create games: camera-assisted 3D sculpting, DIY motion capture experiments, visual scripting,the integration of real world captures into computer generated worlds, and more. The instructor will introduce the students to these tools to rapidly prototype experimental ideas and to integrate these techniques into their projects. GAME STUDIO provides students with a set of materials, tools, libraries, frameworks, engines, interfaces, and instruments to create games, both analog and digital. Among the digital tools that will be explored are Processing (a great tool for learning the fundamentals of programming, free and open source) and Unity 3D, the most popular engine for game making. This course also involves a ‘rapid prototyping’ phase, wherein developers work feverishly to implement a large number of small ideas to test their potential before embarking on the more rigid and costly processes involved in full production. Several famous games in history began with a minimalistic prototype created in less than a week. is an intensive course which aims to build up a student’s repertoire of fast-prototyping skills and provide the student with invaluable experience in starting and finishing games. Each prototype will be confined within a conceptual theme and/or within unique technical constraints. Beyond simply learning to program, students in this class will explore models and algorithms useful for developing games. Students acquire practical skills by building gameplay experiences through a series of short-cycle exercises. GAME BUSINESS provides students seeking to get a job in the video game industry with a basic understanding of its economic components and drivers, so that they may better understand their role within it, whether as an employee of a larger company, a partner in an independent studio, an individual developer, or a freelance contractor. The goal of the class is to provide the practical knowledge and conceptual understanding students need to achieve the greatest degree of success and creative freedom throughout their career. The course also address issues related to marketing, networking, and promotion. The creation of novel storytelling strategies for digital games is one of the key issues in game development. Narrative games build bridges between dramatic writing for theatre and film, television, and game design, and opens new avenues for new types of writing for digital media. GAME WRITING is a hands-on course that focuses on games that include a strong storytelling component, providing the opportunity to do interdisciplinary work. This course introduces students to the design of narrative games, including conceptualization, foundational narrative design strategies, and writing. Throughout the course of the year, students will learn how to use different tools and engines to develop narrative games; they will work individually and in teams. GAME WRITING uses the adventure game genre as a gateway to the general strategies used to incorporate narrative in games. The Master’s degree in Communication for international relations (MICRI) trains communications professionals with specific training leading to work opportunities in the international field, in public or private organisations. 1st level University Master’s degree in Communication for international relations (MICRI) The MICRI Master’s degree is a 1st level postgraduate master’s degree aimed at young graduates and communications professionals, and offers high quality training for work opportunities in the international field. The study path, with a very high profile teaching body both academically and professionally, takes place over 12 months (annually) and features a combination of theoretical training and practical experience: six months of in-week formal lessons with compulsory attendance, in Italian and English, laboratory activities and individual study sessions. Study tour to Washington D.C. and New York The 11th Edition of the Master degree course in “Communication for International Relations” includes a Study Tour to Washington DC and New York. The Study Tour to U.S. is the ideal place to get in touch with current international affairs: nowadays Washington and New York are the main centers for politics and international affairs as location of International Organizations (as Monetary Fund, The World Bank, UN Palace), lobbying firms and International Universities. The Master will provide flights and accommodation. Lessons The Master in Italy MICRI’s academic program is divided into 5 teaching modules, held by IULM University professors as well as experts and professionals from the International Relations field (administrative and executive officials working for ministry and government circles). The academic program will include class sessions, workshops, simulations and a Study Tour in Washington DC and New York. Our Master Degree Courses in International Relations are 60% in English and 40% in Italian. They take place from Monday to Friday and require compulsory attendance. The student is required to attend at least 80% of the total hours of each individual module. V Simulation lab Stage: At the end of this training there will be an internship in national or foreign offices and organizations, in the field of international communication and relations. Project work: At the end of the Master, students will need to draft a final project work about a topic previously agreed upon with professors, followed by a presentation and discussion in the presence of a representative committee of the Master’s faculty Internship The internship can take place in corporate offices, international and national public administrative institutions, either abroad or in Italy. The internship is assigned by the Course Director as part of the academic program, on the base of each student’s attitudes and skills. Internships are to last at least 300 hours given that they are one of the main parts of the didactic course and are to be undertaken between June and December. Candidates will be evaluated strictly focusing on inclinations and personal attitudes, ability to work in groups and to communicate actively, in order to create a strongly motivated team. A basic requirement for all international students, in order to be admitted to an Italian University Master Course, is that they hold a college or university degree equivalent to a three-year first level University Italian degree and that have successfully completed the equivalent number of years of education as an Italian graduate: at least 15 years of study (from primary school to university graduation). Compulsory: very good knowledge of Italian and English language. Application process The application process is made up of 4 stages: On line applications (see below) Pre-enrolment fee: a payment of a € 100,00 admission fee is required (pre-enrolment fee), this amount will be deductible from the first installment applied upon enrolment. No refund will be due if candidates should not proceed to enrolment or should they not pass the selection. After having proceeded with the application, the applicant will be contacted to be informed of his/her eligibility to continue the selection process to the final phase (last stage of evaluation), which will consist of an interview with the master scientific board. The application is confirmed only after: The on-line registration of the student has been completed (http://servizionline.iulm.it/). The Application form, printable after having completed the on line pre-enrolment registration, is called “dichiarazione sostitutiva di certificazione”. It certifies the bachelor degree achieved and the given exams and it has status of legal declaration in Italy (called self-certification); Pre- enrolment fee payment has been credited on University account (this usually takes at least 4 week days). The Master’s degree in International Communication is an international Master’s degree provided by IULM University in partnership with three prestigious European universities specialised in public relations and communication. The MIC offers the opportunity to study in different universities and to acquire a specialisation targeted at global communication. The Master’s degree in International Communication (MIC) is a postgraduate programme entirely in English lasting 18 months and aimed at graduates in the communication disciplines or related subjects. By attending the MIC Master’s degree course you will be able to study in different universities all over Europe and thus obtain dual recognition. The MIC is a full-time programme lasting 3 semesters. The first semester (Professionalising Communication) has a core curriculum in which you will get training on the basic tools of communication, and takes place in one of the three partner universities. The second semester (Communication Professional in Context) is oriented towards specialisation and is held in another of the partner universities. The specialisation depends on the programme offered by the university chosen for the second semester. The third semester involves writing a thesis, under the joint supervision of the two partner universities. The certificate awarded on completion of the study path consists in a double recognition: a Master’s degree from each of the two partner universities and an overall certificate from the consortium. The three European universities which, with IULM, take part in the Hofstede Geert Consortium are: Metropolitan University (Leeds); Universitas Vilnensis (Vilnius); Hanze University Groningen. This course provides the opportunity to research and plan a major project and make a public presentation and a defence to a client in a consultancy role. The trusted advisor: Knowing how to conduct evidence-based research makes one a trusted advisor. This project focusses on applied communication research, specifically the empiric and analytical phase of research, in solving grand societal issues. This course provides the opportunity to perform as a researcher and to apply modern (online) research tools and learn to develop simple and concrete metaphors that help people to organise information on issues in new ways. The engager: An organisation working internationally needs its employees to be interculturally competent. In this course you will learn how to train others and how to manage international projects within the context of a development cooperation. For this course, we work together with the Hanze Centre for Development Cooperation. Leeds Beckett University Public relations skills: This specialisation helps you become more employable in public relations by developing their competence and confidence. With a focus on writing and professional skills, you will develop writing tactics necessary for crafting and delivering communication messages via traditional and social media. You will develop PR consultancy and managerial skills, including crisis management and the role of creativity in communication management. Communication audits: A thorough and effective communication audit ensures an organisation is using the best possible communication channels available. While gaining invaluable insight into the process, you will be challenged to offer creative proposals for improving communication processes and to critically evaluate the recommendations for the client. Digital communication management: New media is rapidly re-shaping the communication industry. The aim of this specialisation is to develop a deeper understanding of new media, in theory and practice, and to critically analyse the implications for corporate communications. IULM University Development and communication: What does it take to become a communication professional in the field of development cooperation? You will develop a critical understanding of communication theory and the practical application of media in development contexts for international organisations and/or NGOs working together with developing nations. Public affairs and advocacy: Explore the art and craft of the lobbying profession. You will be immersed in the strategies, tactics, methods, techniques, regulations, and ethics of those who advocate public policy options to public officials. Social responsibility and communication: Social responsibility is one of the major focus areas of today. What is the role of the communication professional in relation to social responsibility? How can an organisation implement a socially responsible philosophy with the support of its stakeholders? Vilnius University Crisis Management and Communication: An organisation must prepare for the unexpected. The way in which an organisation responds to the unforeseen can save or even damage its reputation. You will focus on how to plan for a crisis and develop the skills needed to handle a crisis effectively. International Communication Campaigns: This specialisation provides you with theoretical knowledge about communication campaigns, implemented in the international arena. You will get a clear understanding of Intercultural communication aspects that are important in planning, organising and implementing communication campaigns. Scientific Research: This specialisation aims to expand and deepen students’ knowledge and skills in scientific research. This includes developing the capacity to assess scientific work to address both theoretical and practical scientific problems, to develop the ability to find reliable sources and the capacity to analyse scientific literature, as well as articulate findings, scientific reasoning and discussion. Public Diplomacy: The course gives the overview of the public diplomacy as means for foreign policy implementation. It also aims to develop students‘ understanding and ability to analyse how current means of communication influence the traditional diplomacy and determines foreign policy methods; whether and how the public diplomacy is employed by governments to achieve their foreign policy goals.
