Introduction

The Accademia Costume & Moda offers courses legally recognised by the Italian Ministry of Education, Universitied and Research under the body that rules Artistic Higher Education. Culture, Design and Craftmanship linked to a laboratorial approach are the key points of the School’s educational mission; the objective is to help the students start their careers, supporting them in the process of recognising and consolidating their creative identity.

The Accademia Costume & Moda releases Academic titles equal to Undergraduate Programs (180 credits) and Master’s Degrees Programs (60 credits), and attendance certificates for its Post Graduate, Intensive and Summer School Programs.

Culture and Experimentation merged with Design and Craftmanship, are our drive in offering to the Fashion System and to the Entertainment Industry, young designers able to respond to their needs.

In its 50 years, Accademia has developed many talents in all its fields of reference. We cannot possibly list them all but we can give you a slight taste of some of their most outstanding achievements.

Among our ALUMNI Creatives and Professionals such as Frida Giannini, Alessandro Michele for Gucci, Aldo Maria Camillo for Cerruti, Sergio Ciucci for Didier Parakian ….

Others instead, have decided to run an independent career creating their own brands Maurizio Galante (Maurizio Galante Haute Couture), Tommaso Aquilano (AQUILANO RIMONDI and Creative Director together with Roberto Rimondi for FAY), Albino D’Amato (Maison Albino), Marella Ferrera (MARELLA FERRERA), Bruno Simeone (Rossorame).

While some have become Head Designers or Line Managers for fashion companies like Valentino, Armani, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Didier Parakian, Alexander Mc Queen.

And to make the list even more complete many are the Senior Designers working for the fashion industry both in Italy and abroad for companies like Max Mara, Givenchy, Dolce e Gabbana etc.

As for the show business/entertainment industry, we are the proud starting point for Academy Award winners like Manlio Rocchetti (“Driving Miss Daisy”) also nominated for the BAFTA Awards for “Gangs of New York“, and top level costume tailors like Francesca Sartori and Gianna Gissi, both winners of several David di Donatello (Italian Oscar Awards), Stefano Canulli (Costume Designer for Cirque du Soleil, Illustrator and close collaborator of Thierry Mugler on various projets) or professionals who have worked for celebrities like Beyoncé and Jennifer Lopez (Vrettos Vrettakos) and many more…

The costume designer is a contemporary creative talent, a master of craftsmanship, dexterity and design. The I Level Masters Degree The Art and Craft of the Costume Designer for Opera and Ballet is meant to be an intensive theoretical and practical path of studies, with scientific research and hands-on laboratories offering tools for the design, modelling and application of costume-making: tailoring techniques focusing on costumes and their accessories, wigs, make-up, masks and jewellery, footwear, headgear. This is all offered in laboratories using practical techniques and applications, seeking to achieve organizational, design and operational skills. Professional Opportunities This Master’s Course trains professionals as assistant costume designers, consultant costume designers, professional costumiers able to work at both national and international levels in Opera and Ballet since graduates are able to analyse and creatively interpret the theme, perform in-depth historical research; realize the sketches of costumes, sample fabrics, follow the manufacturing, design accessories, makeup and wigs needed for a production. To Whom This Master is aimed at those who have successfully completed a recognised first degree, in a subject area relevant to this course, and wish to study with the aim to seriously focus on a career towards costume design. Students who have successfully completed an undergraduate degree in Artistic / Design or a subject area linked to the Master’s Course: YES Humanistic and Liberal Art degree students who have successfully completed an undergraduate course not linked to the specialist area of the Master’s: YES, if accepted by the Course Committee Industry Professionals of the sector and students who have not completed a recognised undergraduate degree but private courses within the subject area of the course: YES, if accepted by the Course Committee and will only be eligible to receive a certificate of participation. Duration The course duration is one academic years and attendance is mandatory however to be accepted at the final assessments students must have at least 80% proven attendance. Educational approach Theoretical classes, seminars with field experts, set designers, dancers, actors, directors, laboratorial workshops and exercises, individual guided studies, visits to theatres, costume shops, museums, art collections and galleries. Due to demand and a closed number of places available (to maintain the quality at this high level of study) to gain access to the course it is required the successful completion of an admission assessment, interview and presentation of a Portfolio. At the end of the Master the students will receive the I Level Academic Master Diploma given by the Accademia Costume & Moda and recognized by the Italian Ministry of Education. [-]
