Introduction

Christ University, formerly Christ College (Autonomous) affiliated to Bangalore University was established in July 1969. It became the most preferred educational institution in the city of Bangaloru within the first three decades. From 1990 onwards it has scaled greater heights. Due to the introduction of innovative and modern curricula, insistence on academic discipline, imparting of Holistic Education, a team of creative and dedicated staff, the institution has been continually rated amongst the top 10 educational institutions of the country. It has the rare distinction of being the first institution in Karnataka to be accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) UGC for quality education. In 2004, UGC conferred Autonomy on the Institution.

In 2005, it became the first College in South India to be reaccredited with A+ by NAAC. UGC identified it as an Institution with Potential for Excellence in 2006.

On July 22, 2008, a glorious day in the history of the Institution, the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Union Government of India, under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, vide Notification No. F. 9-34/2007-U.3(A), declared it a Deemed to be University, in the name and style of Christ University.

Master of Social Work in Human Resource Development and Management (MSW) MSW- Human Resource Development and Management (MSWHRDM) is a new programme that is offered by the Dept. of Social Work. An optimal mix of theory and practice orientations is provided in this course. The onus of the curriculum besides knowledge sharing and knowledge creation is on creativity, critical thinking and skills development. Master of Arts in International Studies (MA) Today’s global environment demands expertise in international affairs to comprehend the contemporary world shaped by global processes – from the inter-connectedness of business and finance to ethnic violence, terrorism and to the struggles for self-determination. Moreover, in a world characterized by increased international cooperation and the need to be knowledgeable about the other areas of the globe is necessary in most spheres of work. To that extent, globalization of economic, political, social and cultural developments has created new opportunities and challenges for tomorrows citizens. Accordingly Christ University has designed an inter-disciplinary post graduate program that focuses on development and the environment, political and economic aspects of globalization, human rights, peace and conflict, and international law and organizations. It covers a spectrum of areas that include the study of globalization, development, democracies, processes of state formation, international organizations, theories of International Relations, international political economy, international security, global environmental politics, Asia-Pacific and Northeast Asian Politics. Therefore the program offers a range of papers that makes one knowledgeable about the forces and institutions that shape the relations between states and the governance of societies across the globe. Students would have the potential to develop a strong educational base to successfully attempt the civil services exam which opens avenues to careers in administration, diplomacy, intelligence; besides compete for jobs in the corporate sector, related to exports which would require knowledge of other countries. Master of Arts in Media and Communication Studies (MA) Today, channels of communications are faster, ubiquitous and varied. Media Studies is about appreciating the skill and creativity which goes into the production of texts for communicating, be it face to face or through media. This is a discipline that successfully weds traditional forms of communication and other allied social sciences with contemporary critical and cultural studies theory to analyze and assess the role and impact of communications and media in contemporary society.Just as analyzing different techniques used in the creation of a literary work helps the student to appreciate the talent of the writer, similarly learning about communication and media techniques helps the student appreciate the values, the skill with words and pictures that the creators of a text must possess. Students learn to analyze the communicative techniques and media, to consider the impact of these on publics and policies, as well as the impact of publics and policies on the media. The Department of Media Studies at Christ University lays stress on an extensive practical agenda in an effort to help students align themselves with the demands and relatives of the industry. The course also intends to help students acquire an all round perspective and clarity of understanding in the discriminative and effective use and design of audio – visual, film and journalistic media for communication for several purposes like Advertising, Education, Development etc. The MS in Communication is a two year course spread over four semesters - two each in the first and final year - with written papers, practical work, viva-voce and internal assessment of sessional work.
