University of Ghana

Introduction

About UG

The vision of the University of Ghana is to develop world-class human resources and capabilities to meet national development needs and global challenges through quality teaching, learning, research and knowledge dissemination. Founded in 1948 as the University College of the Gold Coast, the institution was mandated to provide and promote University learning, education and research. It became the University College of Ghana on the attainment of Ghana’s independence in March 1957. However, by an Act of Parliament on 1st October 1961, the University College of Ghana attained sovereign university status with authority to award its own degrees. It is the oldest and largest of the six public universities in Ghana. With a current student population of over 36,000 of which about 1,100 are international students, the University of Ghana’s operations are governed by the highest level of integrity, ethical standards, openness and fairness, and are underpinned by a performance-driven reward recognition system. It is a centre of academic excellence recognized worldwide for the excellence of its faculty and student body and for the professional success of its alumni. It has trained more than 50,000 graduates who are making contributions towards the development of Ghana as well as at the international level.

Campuses The University’s distinctive specialized teaching and impactful research is carried across three campus communities – Legon Campus, Korle Bu Campus and Accra City Campus.

Legon Campus: The Legon Campus lies about 13 kilometers north-east of Accra, the capital of Ghana. This is where most of the University’s teaching and research are carried out. The Legon Campus also houses the central administration of the University.

There are 16 on-campus residential facilities for students. Admitted postgraduate students are traditionally offered accommodation at the co-ed VALCO Trust Fund Hostel. However, students have the option to reside in any other hostel on campus, or off-campus if they so desire.

From the 2014/2015 academic year the University will be implementing a collegiate system, which among other things, will improve the efficiency in administration and running of the University. Four colleges will be established; College of Health Sciences, College of Humanities, College of Basic and Applied Sciences and the College of Education. Three out of these four colleges will be situated on the Legon Campus. The University of Ghana offers as many as 90 undergraduate and 150 graduate programmes in various fields in the arts, social science, business, physical and biological sciences, medicine, dentistry, allied health sciences, agriculture, engineering sciences and law. Special programmes are offered in Performing Arts, African Studies and International Affairs.

Korle-Bu Campus: The Korle-Bu Campus, headed by a Provost, houses the College of Health Sciences which is made up of the Medical School, Dental School, the School of Public Health, and Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, the School of Allied Health Sciences and the School of Nursing.

Accra City Campus: The Accra City Campus is the new name for the restructured External Degree Center of the University of Ghana which operated at the Accra Workers College. It is situated in the heart of Accra, Ghana’s capital.
