Introduction

bbw University of Applied Sciences

In 2007, the Bildungswerk der Wirtschaft in Berlin und Brandenburg (bbw) founded a private university in response to the rise in the demand for well-qualified academic professionals. The school has grown quickly since then and has now established itself as the second-largest private institution of higher education in the region with currently over 900 students.

The bbw Akademie für Betriebswirtschaftliche Weiterbildung GmbH is the responsible body for the private, government-certified bbw University of Applied Sciences. It is also supported by strong regional business partners as well as its collaborative academic partner, the Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin (HTW). The bbw University of Applied Sciences offers both Bachelors and Masters courses. For a Bachelor's course, you can choose between three main subject groups with various specializations. For Masters` programs, there are three individual interdisciplinary courses to choose from. The courses may be attended as a part-time extra-occupational course (starting on March 1st or September 1st) or on a full-time basis (starting on April 1st and October 1st).This fills a gap in the German educational system at long last through a greater penetrability. The growing complexity facing companies today can only be tackled with well trained employees. The bbw University of Applied Sciences takes this into account in its course curriculums.

The Culture and Creative Industries (CCI) have helped turn Berlin into one of Europe‘s most attractive metropoles for creative professionals and young talent. The lively and dynamic artistic and cultural scene has led Berlin to become a Creative City, with new spaces regularly opening up and increasing revenues being generated as a result. Start-ups from the worlds of fashion, design, architecture and marketing as well as larger and more established companies operating in the realms of music, IT, gaming and media all use Berlin as the hub to reach new customers in their respective markets. Adding to Berlin‘s appeal is its affordable locational factors, its low cost of living, and of course the allure of being a hip, international and tolerant city. The city‘s growth is set to continue, and the key driver will be the Digital Shift a trend that will also bring about some major upheavals in certain areas like the print media. Only highly trained professionals can provide the innovation required to positively shape that development. Such individuals need to be able to understand and manage complex processes that span several industries. bbw University of Applied Sciences, the business school for business, decided to respond to this trend by training industry experts just for the creative economy. It has initiated a Master‘s Program that specifically focuses on developing industry-spanning management skills. Starting in the fall semester of 2015/16, and for the first time in Germany, students may enroll in the ‚Management of Creative Industries‘ Master‘s Program, which has been specifically designed to span several sectors of the creative industry. It‘s the first study program to employ a holistic approach to proactively address the dramatic changes soon to affect the industry. For this reason the curriculum includes overarching Management concepts associated with the planning, management and financial controlling of creative teams, while simultaneously developing an understanding of the challenges those teams face. Specific themes examined include the cross-functional analysis of companies in the CCI. This may involve Innovation Development, which focuses on Design Thinking, Idea Development, Intellectual Property Management, Branding, Advanced Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). Also examined are issues such as “The Power of Sharing”, which investigates Community Driven Marketing, Methods and Strategies of CCI Management, Strategic Financial Planning and Control, as well as the business models associated with Digital Entrepreneurship. The course structure is accommodating for those already working in the industry, in that both extra-occupational and full-time enrollment is possible. Seminars and lectures are held in English the working language of most companies active in the CCI. [-]
