NIT Northern Institute of Technology Management

Introduction

The NIT was founded in 1998 by 40 Professors of the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) driven by an initiative of Professor Dr. Hauke Trinks, President of TUHH at that time. His idea was as simple as convincing: to set up a totally postgraduate institution in order to offer an all-English double degree program that is unique to Europe and attracted top students, faculty and companies – the Northern Institute of Technology Management (NIT) was born and combines in close cooperation with TUHH an MSc in Engineering and an MBA in Technology Management in 24 months. Alternatively, a Master of Arts in Technology Management is offered for students with less than two years of work experience.

The NIT’s own building was constructed with generous support by the Körber Foundation in the year 1999 and is located right on the TUHH campus. It offers modern seminar rooms and office facilities as well as comfortable student apartments, a sports studio and a coffee shop in the light flooded foyer.

Fifteen years of running this program with the Hamburg University of Technology made the NIT a recognized premium private institution of higher education. In addition to excellence in managerial disciplines, NIT program is inspired by a vision of globally responsible and entrepreneurial leadership rooted in broad qualification, comprising intercultural skills, ethics, communication, and languages. Seminars and workshops follow modern teaching and learning approaches and are provided by highly acclaimed academics and practitioners of international repute, coming from a variety of renowned institutions worldwide.

With a real-world multi-disciplinary focus, NIT courses are designed to attract high potentials from all continents. More than 300 talented students apply each year and up to 35 are admitted, including a rather high percentage of female students. So far, students from 61 countries have been admitted to NIT and approximately 450 have completed their double degree at NIT.

The sponsors and supporters in NIT’s network are technology-driven as well as non-engineering enterprises and foundations. Sponsoring companies and institutions appreciate the active contact and exchange with young, ambitious international students, the excellent recruitment opportunity, and the impressive quota of female engineers who successfully complete the program. Many graduates do, indeed, start their career with their sponsors.

Across many regions, functions, and industries, NIT alumni wield their skills to help companies successfully venture into new markets and manage international business. Graduates remain closely connected within the international NIT Alumni Network, which offers a trusted bond between NIT students, alumni and partners.

As a private, non-profit higher education institution, Northern Institute of Technology Management has continued to shape its international reputation for a unique academic combination, for inspirational teaching in an intercultural environment, and for excellent links with industry.
