Heilbronn University ranks amongst the major institutions of Higher Education in the state of Baden-Württemberg where it caters for almost 8,000 degree-seeking students on four campuses, namely Heilbronn – Sontheim, Heilbronn – Am Europaplatz, Künzelsau and Schwäbisch Hall.

Consequently, software engineers need to move beyond the boundaries of their job-specific expertise and enhance their professional profiles by acquiring managerial and interpersonal competences. Software engineers who aim to be future business leaders should not only possess such multiple skills, but should be able to translate theoretical knowledge into business practices, engender interdisciplinary dialogues and communicate successfully in an international and intercultural environment. The M.Sc. Software Engineering and Management has been tailored to the needs of students who are interested in interdisciplinary approaches and seek a good foundation for their future careers. CAREER PROSPECTS The global world is characterised by steadily expanding world-wide networks, on the one hand, and a global shortage of IT experts, on the other. As a result, there is a growing demand for software engineers who can look forward to well-paid positions in industry. Thus, the job prospects for Master students in this field are highly promising. Prospective employers of our graduates are internationally operating companies which require a broad range of skills as well as specific expertise in software development. Alternatively, job openings may be provided by small and medium-sized enterprises which develop software solutions for larger companies. Finally, by successfully completing this Master programme, our graduates will be well equipped to set up their own business or to develop and perform software projects all over the world. OBJECTIVES Job prosperity in software engineering not only depends on subject knowledge but also on project and change management experience. Moreover, intercultural and interpersonal competences are crucial for software engineers who seek to take appropriate management decisions and to act confidently and responsibly in a challenging business environment. For this reason, the Faculty of Informatics has designed this postgraduate programme to qualify first-degree graduates for management and leadership positions in international IT organisations. This course has been created in close consultation with business, industry and the engineering professions to ensure the employability of the prospective graduates. Cooperating companies are, inter alia, AUDI AG, Daimler AG, Bosch Engineering GmbH, Würth GmbH and SAP AG. FACULTY Heilbronn University has appointed a body of notable academics who possess unique competences that derive from their qualifications and professional experience. They have all worked in industry or commerce and understand, at first hand, the challenges presented by a global business world. Moreover, most tenured lecturers are involved in (inter)national research projects. Academic partnerships and exchange programmes with a number of universities all over the world allow our students to gain experience in an international software engineering context. Such partner institutions are Edinburgh Napier University in Scotland, Dundalk Institute of Technology in Ireland and the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia in Spain. These partnerships may include projects with virtual international student teams as well as video conferences and other form of on-line collaboration. Programme Structure The Master of Software Engineering and Management can be obtained in 3 semesters. The first two semesters cover the following four major areas providing a sound theoretical basis in each field and preparing students for a number organisational and leadership tasks in international software engineering organisations. Computer Science Applied Software Engineering Information Systems in Business Leadership, Intercultural and Interpersonal Competences The final semester is dedicated to the Master Thesis which is accompanied by a colloquium. The thesis may deal with a topic of interest motivated by contemporary research or be commissioned by a cooperating organisation. Each thesis is supervised by two examiners one of whom may be an external professional. SPECIFIC PROGRAMME FEATURES The M.Sc. Software Engineering and Management offers a number of specific benefits and assets such as lectures delivered exclusively in English, a favourable student-lecturer ratio, an interdisciplinary curriculum, integration of management and engineering practices, a clearly structured and timeefficient schedule, sustained teaching quality by systematic student appraisal, state-of-the-art facilities, innovative forms of teaching, creative forms of learning, e.g. problem-based and blended learning. Using case studies and working in teams not only improves analytical and problem solving capacities but familiarizes them students with methodological and creative problem solving techniques and the relational skills which are vital for future business leaders. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Successful applicants fulfil the following entry requirements: An excellent or good German(average grade of 2.5 or less) or European Bachelor degree (minimum 210 ECTS) or an equivalent international qualification (attested by an ASK certificate) in Computer Science or a closely-related field. Candidates who have obtained 180 ECTS for their first degree can acquire an extra 30 ECTS in appropriate Bachelor programmes at Heilbronn University. An excellent or good German, European or International Bachelor degree in any other field if applicants can provide proof of additional course-related educational or vocational experience acquired in the previous three years. A high level of proficiency in English attested by the following scores: TOEFL pbt: 550; cbt: 213; ibt: 79; IELTS: 6.0 or CAE: minimum C; Results must not be older than 2 years.
