Hertie School of Governance

Introduction

The Hertie School of Governance is an international teaching and research centre of excellence that prepares students for leadership positions in government, business, and civil society.

An internationally-recruited faculty, interdisciplinary in outlook, research, and teaching, offers analytically-challenging and practice-oriented courses on governance, policy analysis, management, and leadership and helps students grow intellectually in a professional, research-intensive environment, characterised by public debate and engagement.

A unique research agenda

An interdisciplinary focus and policy orientation distinguish the Hertie School's research agenda. Internationally recognised academics make up the core faculty. Together with extended faculty, visiting faculty, postdoctoral researchers, research associates and PhD students they cover a broad spectrum of public policy issues in their teaching and research. First-rate publications and numerous international research projects with partner institutions are further highlights of research at the Hertie School.

The Hertie School Approach
The Hertie School of Governance prepares exceptional students for leadership positions in government, business, and civil society. The School also offers experienced professionals the opportunity to deepen their skills in the field of public management. A renowned international faculty with expertise in economics, business, law, political and social science take an interdisciplinary, policy-oriented approach to the School´s teaching and research agenda. The Hertie School is an international centre, with a variety of first-rate academic projects and a diverse student body. The School actively engages in public debate with its wide range of events bringing together experts from theory and practice. The School was founded in 2003 as a project of the Hertie Foundation, which remains the major partner.


Objectives

For furthering its vision and for adding value to its mission, the main objectives of the Hertie School of Governance are to become:

  • A leading institution of higher learning for the international, interdisciplinary, and inter-sectoral study of governance and policy, with a shared emphasis on acquiring conceptual knowledge, analytic methods, and practical skills;
  • A centre of excellence in research on governance and policy issues that invites inter-disciplinary, cross-sectoral approaches informed by comparative, international perspectives;
  • A recognised platform for vibrant public debate and engaged intellectual discourse among academic experts and policy-makers for presenting and discussing policy issues and their implications; and
  • A sought-after, reliable, and highly-valued resource of top-quality expertise and state-of-the-art knowledge to governments, businesses, and civil society.

Master of Public Policy

 

The Master of Public Policy (MPP) is a fulltime study programme for graduates and young professionals who hold at least a bachelor's degree (or its international equivalent). The MPP is taught in English and brings together students from 40 countries. The programme is accredited by ACQUIN.

 

The Master of Public Policy prepares students for future leadership positions in government, business, and civil society.It offers analytically-challenging and practice-oriented courses in the areas of governance, policy analysis, management, and leadership. The MPP fosters intellectual growth in a professional, research-intensive environment characterised by public debate and engagement.
