University of Eastern Finland Philosophical Faculty

Introduction

The Philosophical Faculty is one of the four Faculties at the University of Eastern Finland. The Faculty emphasises internationality and multidisciplinarity and works for the advancement of education for the public good according to the principles of the University of Eastern Finland. Its special mission is to conduct scientific research and offer research based academic education in the fields of educational sciences and psychology, home economics and craft science, linguistics and cultural studies.

The Faculty serves not only Eastern Finland but the whole country and the international scientific community as well. In certain areas of education, theology, languages and culture the Faculty has an expressly defined national mission. The Faculty also strives to provide its services to the society as a whole by providing expertise and education in the fields it represents for the advancement of the social, economic and cultural well-being of Eastern Finland in particular.

International Master in Early Language Education for Intercultural Communication

 

The two-year International Master's Degree Programme in Early Language Education for Intercultural Communication (120 ECTS) is offered jointly by the University of Eastern Finland (Joensuu campus, Finland) and the Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia (St Petersburg, Russia). The programme prepares students to teach foreign languages to children. Special emphasis is laid on early age intercultural communication competence. The overall maximum number of available study places is 20 (10 per each university).

 

The general strength of the programme is generated by its didactics and methodology relying upon a balanced combination of theory and practice to be used in a future work as a teacher or educator. The programme facilitates gaining a multicultural view on educational issues and sharing personal/collective experience in intercultural settings. The programme prepares its students to effectively tackle challenges and possibilities arising from the globalisation, as well as cultural and linguistic diversity. The curriculum is composed of the following three study modules: ORIENTATION STUDIES (5 ECTS) This section includes introductory courses that provide students with skills needed for starting his/her studies in the University of Eastern Finland and this particular programme. MAJOR STUDIES (95 ECTS) Major Studies include methodological studies, as well as research planning seminars. This module includes as well courses focusing on international professional communication. The content studies are oriented towards theory and practice of teaching foreign languages to young learners, current pedagogical and educational issues, innovative pedagogical solutions, as well as teaching and professional practice. OTHER STUDIES (20 ECTS) The content of Other Studies include an obligatory course "Intercultural Communication Competence" (5 ECTS) and at least 15 ECTS of Elective Studies. MDP in English Language and Culture

 

This programme, taught entirely in English and aimed at international applicants, seeks to provide an opportunity to study English from a variety of literary and linguistic perspectives. The degree consists of coursework and a research thesis. The objectives of the programme include in-depth understanding of the multifacetedness of contemporary English studies; increased awareness of key debates in contemporary linguistics and literary studies; and an ability to carry out independent research. The enrolment for this programme is limited to the maximum of four (4) international students per year.During their studies, students will specialize on linguistics or literary and cultural studies. The Department has internationally recognized areas of strength in both linguistics and literary studies. In linguistics, these include dialectology, language contact, language variation and change, pragmatics, and bilingualism. In literary and cultural studies, the Department's areas of strength include postcolonial and ethnic literatures, American literature, popular fiction, and contemporary fiction.... [-]
