The Royal Academy of Music - Det Jyske Musikkonservatorium

Introduction

The Royal Academy of Music as it is shaped today was brought about in 2010 by the merger between The Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus, founded in 1927, and The Academy of Music, Aalborg, founded in 1930.

But if you dive into the annals of history, you will find that it is not so much a merger as a returning to the institution's original form. The Academy in Aalborg was founded as a northern department of the Academy in Aarhus three years later, and both were founded by Johan Nilsson and his wife Magda.

This means that after 80 years of separation the two institutions were reunited in 2010 to become two departments of the same Academy.

The Royal Academy of Music, Aarhus/Aalborg is a state institution under the auspices of the Danish Ministry of Culture, charged with responsibility for the further education courses in music, and for otherwise contributing to the promotion of musical culture in Denmark.


Programmes


The programmes have been given the highest status, both nationally and internationally. This means that they measure up to the best comparable courses on offer abroad. We train students for careers as professional musicians, and, depending on the course taken, students graduate either as solo performers or as music teachers.


Teaching


The emphasis of the teaching is on solo work with an instrument or the voice, but there is also ensemble playing and a number of supplementary subjects. For those studying to become music teachers, particular importance is attached to music pedagogy and communicative subjects. Our corps of teachers is active and committed, and we expect our students to exhibit the same qualities. We are flexible, but we attach importance to discipline and cooperation as important elements in the training of professional musicians and music teachers.

The Master of Global Music (GLOMAS) is a new, innovative and specialized graduate degree programme offered in collaboration between higher education institutions in three Nordic nations. Students will primarily be affiliated with one of the three Glomus founding partner institutions in Denmark, Sweden, or Finland but will also participate in joint courses held at each institution, for which travel and lodging expenses will normally be covered. In most cases, the Master degree programme will take 2 years to complete. In addition to coursework, all students will also conduct fieldwork on a foreign or minority musical culture. Students will be offered opportunities for fieldwork via partner institutions in the Southern hemisphere, particularly Africa and the Middle East.The programme emphasizes development of “bimusical” performance skills, typically within at least two traditions from different parts of the world, as well as studies of topics relevant to the career of a professional musician, including such areas as musical leadership and instructional skills, project management, and applied research. Master of Music Electronic Composition

 

Through The Danish Institute for Electronic Music (DIEM), the Academy is the only place in Denmark that offers several study programmes within electronic music. Study programmes function in concert with other music academy study programmes and the demands on students in e-music are high. The genre of electronic music includes both classical and rhythmic traditions allowing an endless space for creativity when composing music. At the same time, it builds a bridge between two latter genres at the Academy. The MMus (Electronic Composition) degree course at The Royal Academy of Music, Aarhus, is a course during which students acquire specialist knowledge, skills, and qualifications to become electronic composers at the highest level and driving forces in music business. The master's degree also prepares students for postgraduate studies at soloist or PhD level.The course structure has a constant focus on the Composition/Production subject. A successful completion of the bachelor’s degree programme qualifies the student for admission at master’s programmes at the Academy. The aim of the master’s programme is to develop the student’s skills in the creation and practicing of music.Within classical programme, students continue to study their principal subject, but may also supplement the studies with one theoretic or management subject, turning the studies into a double-subject program and thus choosing whether to become a practicing musician or music teacher. The MMus (Orchestral Musician) degree course at The Royal Academy of Music, Aarhus, is a 2-year course during which students acquire specialist knowledge, skills, and qualifications to become musicians at the highest level and distinctive music business entrepreneurs.The course structure has a constant focus on main instrument tuition, and the main study area also comprises Chamber Music which is concluded after the second semester and teaches the student to use his/her instrumental skills in cooperation and communication between musicians. At the Academy, master’s students follow a 2-year university program in an artistic and research-based study environment. Master’s students compared to bachelor’s students develop their knowledge, skills and competences that make them able to initiate and execute music projects and educational training independently. The master’s education allows students to fulfil highly professional roles in the labour market. Additionally, this master’s degree program provides a foundation for further studies at Soloist study program.

 

 

Content

 

Master of Music, Rhythmic Choir Direction (KA-RK). The candidate may use the following title: Cand. Musicae / Master of Music.The course structure has a constant focus on the Rhythmic Choir Direction and Rhythmic Choir Methods subjects. The main subject area of the degree course also includes Theory and Method of Musicology on the first semester. In addition, a series of skill-oriented subjects such as Ear Training, Piano, and Singing are taught. All of these contribute to the broad qualifications that a choir director must possess. At the Academy, master’s students follow a 2-year university program in an artistic and research-based study environment. Content and opportunities

 

The MMUS Rhythmic Music Teacher degree course at The Royal Academy of Music, Aarhus, is a 2-year course during which students build upon the knowledge, skills, and qualifications as rhythmic musicians and teachers acquired during the BMus degree course. Taking their musicianship as a starting point, students immerse themselves in two or three supplementary main subjects in addition to the main instrument. Main Instrument Pedagogics may constitute one of these main subjects. The main subjects must correspond to at least 6 semesters of tuition, are selected from the main subject catalogue (q.v.), and incorporate a communicative aspect as well as a pedagogical course. Electives may also be added.The degree course forms the basis for student choices in relation to their future careers as musicians and teachers. The Nordic Master in Jazz (NOMAZZ) is a joint initiative between the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus, the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and the Royal College of Music in Stockholm.The programme leads to the Master of Music Degree (MMus) according to each institution’s specific regulations. When a student is accepted to the programme, he/she will become a student of one of these four institutions, which will be his/her "home institution", and where he/she will also graduate from eventually. The basic structure of the studies will, however, be the same for all the students in the programme and is designed and managed in co-operation with all institutions involved.The programme’s common language is English.You will receive tuition from some of the best known musicians of the Nordic jazz scene. However, the course has no pre-conceived stylistic conventions, and the students on the course have wide-ranging tastes in music, meaning you can focus on your own personal expression.Most importantly, Nomazz is intended for musicians who have reached a high level of performance ability.
