Introduction

Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) is a truly unique institution, jointly founded by Xi'an Jiaotong University and the University of Liverpool. It is the only international collaborative university in China where all undergraduate (Bachelors) students receive two degrees (dual award) from the Chinese Ministry of Education and from the University of Liverpool degree). Masters students will receive a degree from the University of Liverpool.

Founded in 2006 with an initial intake of just 164 students, the University has grown rapidly. We now have over 8,000 students on campus with a further 2,500 studying at Liverpool under a 2+2 articulation agreement. XJTLU undergraduate students may study the entire degree programme in Suzhou, China, or start study in Suzhou and then complete the final two years at the University of Liverpool.

At XJTLU, International students who are native or near-native English Language speakers can be exempt from the XJTLU Year 1 study and complete their degree in three years (subject to qualifications).

XJTLU is independent, but draws for guidance and experience upon its two parent universities, both of which are over one hundred years old and highly respected international pioneers. The University recruits students from China and abroad at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and also receives visiting, exchange and Chinese Language Studies students.

Modern China is an urban and architectural laboratory and the Department of Architecture at XJTLU is at the forefront of this exciting design revolution. Against a backdrop of fast- paced modernization, our students engage with the challenges and contradictions of architecture in China in a courageous and forward-thinking manner. Our department is well-positioned to critically engage with the important issues facing Architecture today, including some of the fundamental challenges of the 21st Century. Innovation and development come from critical observation, discourse, and constructive debate. As academics and architects we involve ourselves in real debates, challenge common perceptions and question traditions. Our students use our unique location in Suzhou to explore the dynamics of urbanity and investigate city formation in order to understand the past, to engage in the present and to speculate about the future as we aim to influence the course of architecture and design in China and the world. RIBA ACCREDITATION XJTLU’s Department of Architecture has attained candidate course status from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) for its Part I undergraduate programme and is seeking international validation at RIBA Part II level. Masters students will receive ‘Graduate member of the RIBA’ status upon graduation, as well as professional accreditation from the Ministry of Construction in China. The MRes in Management programme develops a systematic understanding and critical appreciation of alternative approaches, methodologies and paradigms of research in the field of business and management, to equip students with an understanding of what constitutes quality research, and to acquaint them with the research processes available in business and management research from the point of inception to project completion. The programme is offered at XJTLU by IBSS faculty, and results in a University of Liverpool degree. The overall goal of the programme is to develop fully-trained and competent management researchers who are able to understand and use research techniques appropriate to their subject area and be conversant with approaches used by other management researchers. There is substantial demand for quality academics in China, and this programme is designed to meet that need. The programme has a substantial theoretical and methodological core, which provides an essential basis for students moving on to Doctoral level study.
