To develop itself as a world-class university, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) has established a comprehensive, strategic partnership with the University of Michigan (UM) in international cooperation. The remarkable result is the UM-SJTU Joint Institute, established in 2006. Two majors are offered: mechanical engineering (ME) and electrical and computer engineering (ECE). In 2009, JI started a graduate school as well.
To educate creative future global leaders, JI adopts an educational system similar to that of UM, including faculty appointment and all–English teaching. It has already made breakthrough in faculty recruitment, innovative talent students training, and administrative system. The JI model has received significant attention within US higher educational institutions and has become a role model in exercising international education cooperation between China and the US.
The class of 2012 has achieved excellent accomplishments. Almost all of the senior students who applied for graduate programs overseas have received master or Ph.D. admission offers from world-class universities, some have won scholarships. The students who chose starting working immediately after graduation have been recruited by national key enterprises and multi-national companies, such as Shanghai Volkswagen, Guangzhou Honda, State Grid, Peugeot Citroen, Schlumberger, Deloitte, KPMG, PwC, etc.
JI’faculty is world-class. All faculty members have Ph.D. degrees from top universities(such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Michigan, Columbia University, Princeton University, Stanford University, University of California, Berkeley, University of Pennsylvania, University of Wisconsin-Madison University of Maryland, University of Tokyo, Purdue University ,Carnegie Mellon University , Drexel University , Georgia Institute of Technology, California Institute of Technology, University Of Southern California , University of Utah , University of Minnesota ), and many have a wealth of experience working in renowned universities( such as University of Michigan, Georgia Institute of Technology , Ohio State University, Stony Brook University, Duke University, University of Iceland, Michigan State University) or international companies. JI is characterized having a multi-cultural and international atmosphere, international students, faculty, and staff work together.
