The Master’s programme in Economic Policy helps students to analyse the wide range of problems facing economic policy makers and to understand the background to political decision-making. Biology is a fundamental scientific discipline focusing on formulating and testing hypotheses through observations and experiments in the lab or the field. As a Biology student, you will thus be actively involved in ongoing research in the various internationally oriented research groups of the Department of Biology, whatever the specialisation you choose. Likewise, the teaching in each of these specialisations is supported by the staff and expertise of the research groups. In the specialisation “Biodiversity: Conservation and Restoration”, emphasis lies on the global biodiversity crisis, one of the key elements of global change. You acquire insight into the causes and consequences of the current worldwide loss of plant and animal species, and into the theory and practice of managing endangered species and the conservation and restoration of habitats. Linkages with society, for example, biodiversity policy, legislation and international treaties, will also be highlighted. The Master in Maritime and Air Transport Management prepares its graduates for the challenges faced by the transport sector today. In the programme, students can choose one of three majors: transport research, air transport or maritime transport. Thus, students can tailor their programme to their specific interests and background. The majors air transport and maritime transport allow students to upgrade their knowledge and abilities and prepare them for their next career step in the maritime or air transport sector. Moreover, the main objective of these majors is to help executive staff members from transport related companies and organisations (shipping companies, port authorities, terminal operators,airlines, airports etc.) to become top-notch executives. The major transport research on the other hand offers students a more methodological and quantitative training. In this major, students receive an excellent preparation for a career in for example consulting, policy or research. Moreover, the major transport research can lay the groundwork for further academic pursuits such as a PhD. The Master in Maritime and Air Transport Management is specifically designed with an international audience in mind. It is aimed at individuals with a background in economics or management focusing on transport-related matters and who wish to develop their skills in these areas with a view to career advancement. Furthermore, students become truly submerged in industry practice during the course of the programmes. First, numerous excursions and company visits are organized as part of the various courses. The programme of the Master in English is largely determined by the research specialties of the staff, which means that courses are informed by cutting edge work in a wide variety of fields. The orientation to research means that the best students are encouraged to apply for doctoral positions, e.g. with the Flemish Fund for Scientific Research (FWO). (Note: applicants to FWO positions must hail from the European Economic Area.) Research specialties in English at the University of Antwerp include Genetic Criticism, Narrative Theory, Queer Studies and Urban Studies on the side of literature (with Samuel Beckett, James Joyce, Thomas Pynchon and Wallace Stevens as “special authors”), and language typology, semantics and syllabus design on the side of linguistics....
