Introduction

The University of South Australia (UniSA) is a globally connected and engaged university, helping solve the problems of industry and the professions. With more than 32,000 students including 6,000 international students, the University is South Australia’s largest. The University is ranked in the top three percent of more than 10,000 universities worldwide in the 2015 QS World University Rankings.

In 2015/16, the QS ‘Top 50 under 50’ ranked us at number 25 in the world for universities less than 50 years old.

The 2015 QS Stars Rankings awarded us with an overall five star rating, as well as five stars in the following eight categories: Research, Employability, Teaching, Facilities, Internationalisation, Social responsibility, Inclusiveness and Specialist Criteria. An overall five star rating typically distinguishes a university as being world class in a broad range of areas, enjoys a high reputation, has cutting edge facilities and an internationally renowned research and teaching faculty.

The 2015 Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) evaluation rated more than 97 per cent of the University’s assessed research as world class or above.

UniSA is ranked in the top 100 (number 57) and in the top 10 in Australia (number 8) in the world for international universities in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2015-2016 ‘top 200 most international universities’.

The University offers more than 400 degree programs across a wide range of subjects including business, law, education, arts and social sciences, health sciences, information technology, engineering and the environment. Programs are designed in consultation with business and the professions and include fieldwork, placements, industry-guided simulations and business projects. This real-world experience provides students with the qualities that employers look for.

Students benefit from the modern facilities and are taught by academics who are experts in their field, with 73 percent of our academic staff holding a PhD. UniSA were ranked second in Australia for student support services in the 2015 International Student Barometer.

We are the only Business School in Adelaide that is EQUIS accredited and one of only nine in Australia.

In the 2015 QS Subject Rankings we were ranked in the top 100 institutions in the world in the QS subject areas of Education and Architecture/Built Environments.

The Master of Architecture comprises the final two years of the five year professionally accredited architecture education offered at UniSA. During this degree, students will refine their technical and communication skills, and solve increasingly complex design problems through the application of skills developed in integrated courses. The program has a core focus on Design Studio as a place of integration for other streams of learning. The Design Studio courses allow students to develop capabilities in areas such as sustainability, construction and documentation, urban design, contemporary design theory and digital exploration. Student-directed learning is an important facet of the program, which offers extensive opportunities for specialisation according to individual preferences. Students can pursue specific areas through the major research components of the course and through advanced electives such as remote construction, urban design, sustainable design, conservation, digital environments and architectural history and theory. The program also offers an excellent Student Design and Construction program, which enables students to engage in real-life projects, such as designing and building pre-fabricated structures for remote communities. Professional accreditation This program is professionally accredited by the Architectural Practice Board of South Australia, endorsing the architecture qualifications of graduates required for registration as an architect. Accreditation demonstrates the achievement of relevant competencies from the AACA National Competency Standards in Architecture. Professional recognition The Australian Institute of Architects recognises the program, endorsing architecture qualifications required for membership of the AIA, including student and graduate membership. Offering two specialisations, the Master of Engineering offers you the opportunity to gain expertise in the area of Autonomous Systems or Engineering Management. This program is also offered in the form of a nested suite of three programs at postgraduate level (graduate certificate, graduate diploma and master). Each qualification extends to the next, allowing you to easily transition to a master level qualification. Autonomous Systems Intelligent autonomous systems represent the next big leap; they are likely to be transformational. These systems are enabled by the fusion of engineering systems, computational intelligence, sensing, communication and software to create intelligent systems capable of interacting with the complexities of the real world. This specialisation blends the disciplines of mechanical, electrical, computing, and systems engineering. It is distinguished by its focus on systems integration, outdoor field and real-world application of the systems. Engineering Management You will gain knowledge and skills in operations management, total quality management, supply chain management, enterprise resource planning, automation, energy and society, and project management. This program aims to closely align learning to professional practice and provides you with opportunities to develop and apply skills whilst integrating knowledge to complete a practical industry project in your own area of interest or a project related to any research institutions affiliated to the School of Engineering. Possible career outcomes Autonomous Systems graduates can undertake various roles such as developing, acquiring, managing or researching intelligent autonomous systems in sectors including defence, aerospace, automotive, construction, energy, water, transportation, consumer electronics, information technology, telecommunications, mining and health care. Engineering Management graduates can pursue opportunities as factory operation managers, engineering department managers, energy managers, project managers and engineering business development managers. Telecommunications You will study advanced topics in wireless and mobile communication systems, information theory and coding, and telecommunication networks. This program is strongly supported by the University of South Australia’s research environment. Electrical Power You will undertake advanced study in the theory and techniques related to electrical power systems including operation and control of modern power systems, renewable and distributed energy generation, and advanced modelling of electrical machines. As a telecommunications graduate, your role will vary from research and development (equipment, solutions), through to network planning and provisioning to operations.
