Mission and goals

This programme is located at the Polo Universitario of La Spezia with the contribution of the University of Genova and the Politecnico di Milano. Part of the activities are carried out also at the University of Genova and others at the Politecnico di Milano.

Students’ formation involves both new design as well as refitting of existing yachts and vessels. Themes of interest are: mega-yachts, regatta boats, ship interiors, nautical accessories and set-ups. The course prepares figures able to manage project complexity both of the craft as well as their components and accessories, from concept development to implementation.

All the main parts of the nautical and shipping sector have been expanding considerably in recent years: pleasure craft, mega-yachts, racing boats, cruise ships, shipping accessories and furnishings. However this expansion is only partly sustained by professionals trained for the purpose, who are able to add value to specifically Italian features and boost the competitivity of the national economy.

The Master Degree in Nautical and Shipping Design was set up as a logical complement to the range of courses in shipping design for years offered by the La Spezia University Campus. Started by the University of Genova and today enjoying the participation of the Politecnico di Milano, the course aims to become a national center for training in this sector. The main objective is the development of a systemic design capability, able to interpret the sector, anticipate tendencies, design and follow the design process through to execution, and assess the impact of choices made.

The training course includes contributions from theoretical and critical disciplines in order to provide a solid methodological base, advanced scientific knowledge and develop the capacity for individual research, lifelong learning, planning and strategically targeted designing. The course uses the skills and knowhow of the faculties participating in the program synergically. Scientific and technical skills proper to the sector (shipping architecture, shipbuilding and systems, fluid dynamics, etc.) are integrated with learning from the areas of representation, communication, history. In the design laboratories students are able to experiment what they have learnt in the various courses.

Professional skills acquired by graduates concern:

  • integrated designing ability in the aesthetic, formal and functional qualities of shipping products,
  • ability to supervise production processes both in series and one off;
  • ability to work in a wide range of operations from shipping accessories to interior settings geared to the end use of the different products.

Professional opportunities

The professional figure graduating from this course can find employment in shipyards and related activities (for example, component manufacturers) as well as in design companies.

The role which Master of Science graduates can typically occupy are those of designer in the technical departments of shipyards, designer in design studios or companies for developing accessories for the sector, ship and boat exterior and interior designer, coordinator of production in shipyards, contract designer for cruise ships, etc.
