Seminar for Senior Executives in the Oil and Gas Industry -- Developing Senior Managers in the New Century

A two-week general management program uniquely tailored to the oil and gas industry and the needs of its top-level managers.

Over the past quarter century, many hundreds of senior industry managers from around the world have gathered together in this SMU course to share ideas and gain a broad-based business education relevant to today's ever-changing oil and gas environment. During the two weeks of this seminar, you will delve into areas of both theory and practice. You will tackle key strategic, financial, leadership, and operational issues in the oil and gas industry context.

The program is an intensive, two-week course of study that begins late afternoon on Sunday and concludes at noon on the second Friday.

Who Should Attend

The seminar is designed for executives in positions of substantial general management responsibility (or those about to move into such positions) who seek to improve their overall managerial effectiveness. It is also appropriate for those managers with significant managerial decision-making responsibilities in a specific industry segment or functional area, such as exploration, production, transportation, refining, marketing, or finance.

You will will meet and share ideas with executives from around the world and will have plenty of opportunities to make acquaintances. Much of your time during the program will be spent discussing industry issues with other program members - in small discussion groups, in living classroom sessions, over meals, and in recreational and social settings. The typical participant will have more than 10 years of management experience. Past participants have generally reached at least the division manager or large department manager level in major firms and somewhat higher in independent firms. The age of attendees has generally ranged from the mid-30s to the early-50s.

During the two-week course of study, you will broaden your knowledge base by probing areas of leadership, corporate strategy, financial planning and control, and corporate finance.

In a series of informative class sessions, you will explore new ideas and skills in each of the following areas:


- Leadership as a sustainable competitive advantage: identifying essential leadership competencies
- Examining organizational complexities and problem-solving strategies
- Personal awareness and effectiveness in facing conflict
- Leading effective organizational change initiatives
- Negotiation strategies for oil and gas managers: managing interorganizational negotiations, partnerships, joint ventures, and mergers

Corporate Strategy

- The global context and its implications for managing in today's oil and gas firms
- Analyzing the competitive environment and defining performance
- Understanding the process of scenario planning
- Sustaining competitive advantage
- Strategy implementation in multinational settings
- Assessing the roles of diversification, divestiture, integration, and retrenchment in the overall restructuring process

Financial Accounting and Managerial Control

- A practical approach to understanding the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement
- Cost behavior and cost-volume-profit relationships
- Analyzing annual reports: a hands-on assessment of financial performance using published energy company financial statements
- Measuring financial performance in energy companies: comparing Full Cost, Successful Efforts, and other accounting methods used around the world
- Using the Balanced Scorecard to assess company performance

Corporate Finance

- Understanding the financial impact of operational decisions
- Estimating the firm's financing needs and determining levels of sustainable growth
- Assessing project economics: discounted cash flow (DCF) techniques, quality of data, measurement used (payback, IRR, NPV), relevant cash flows, appropriate cost of capital
- Funding large projects and managing risk in the energy industry
