The Research Master in Law ranks # 1 in The Netherlands according to the Keuzegids Hoger Onderwijs (Dutch Guide to Higher Education), 2014.
An exceptionally broad curriculum is just one of the ways in which this program offers talented young researchers a superior academic learning environment. Students enjoy a high level of faculty guidance and peer support in writing their research proposal, which serves as the basis for future applications to PhD or other research positions. Students enjoy exceptional flexibility, with the scope to choose their own research topic, supervisor and research group.
The LLM Research Master in Law is your opportunity to immerse yourself in the task of developing new knowledge and first-rate academic research skills in the area that interests you.
The Research Master in Law is designed for talented and motivated students with the ambition to develop a proficiency in legal research via a top-quality degree program.
Developing your skills in academic research
Intellectually challenging and intensive, students acquire a comprehensive understanding of how to conduct independent and critical academic research. Students gain specialized knowledge in one or more legal areas, and develop the social and intellectual skills needed to perform in national and international research groups.
More individual support
Every year, a maximum of 24 national and international students with strong academic records are admitted to the program. Because the group is purposely kept small, students can expect a more one-on-one time with their supervisors. Each student is also assigned a mentor, who can provide program support and guidance when it comes to the student's progress, direction and future ambitions.
A unique opportunity
The Research Master in Law is unique in its generalized nature. Talented young researchers are given the tools to conduct methodically sound legal research within a wide range of different legal fields. Particular attention is given to the fields of comparative law, judicial lawmaking, the principles of law, and the interdisciplinary study of law.
A Research Master's in Law degree represents the successful completion of the first stage of your research career. It can also serve as a powerful launch-pad for a career as a legal practitioner.
Graduates of this program are equipped to conduct research at various organizations from universities to government bodies and international organizations.
While the emphasis in this program is on legal research, it is also excellent preparation for a career in legal practice. Around 50% of the students who have successfully completed this program have gone on to pursue a (PhD) research career within or outside Tilburg University, while 50% have become legal practitioners and found employment at law firms and international organizations worldwide.
