Post Experience Programmes in Public Management

Victoria University of Wellington, Victoria Business School

Post Experience Programmes in Public Management Our Post Experience programmes in Public Management are designed for those aspiring to a career in management in the government and non-government sectors. The programmes allow students to enhance their understanding of the theory and practice of public management, boost their performance as a manager and develop ways of improving practice in their organisations. Governance and public sector reform, managing strategy, finances, planning, service delivery, human resources, monitoring and evaluation and more - all with a focus on the New Zealand sector context - are covered in the programmes. Public Management Programme OptionsThe Public Management programme consists of three options:

  • Postgraduate Certificate in Public Management (60 points)
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Public Management (120 points)
  • Master of Public Management (180 points)

Students may enter into the desired degree directly or progress from a Certificate to a Diploma to a Master's degree by a process called 'staircasing'. A student may complete their Certificate and then return at a later stage to complete their Diploma or Master's degree. If a degree is awarded and the student then progresses through to the next level, the previous award must be relinquished. Postgraduate Certificate in Public Management The Postgraduate Certificate in Public Management (PGCertPM) consists of four courses totalling 60 points. The PGCertPM is generally completed over two consecutive trimesters in one year, with students taking two courses per trimester. Students should complete the PGCertPM within two years of first enrolling in the programme. Postgraduate Diploma in Public Management The Postgraduate Diploma in Public Management (PGDipPM) consists of courses totalling 120 points. The PGDipPM is generally completed in four trimesters over two years, with students taking two courses per trimester. Students should complete the PGDipPM within three years of first enrolling in the programme. Master of Public Management The Master of Public Management (MPM) consists of courses totalling 180 points. The programme is usually completed in six trimesters over three years for part-time candidates, taking two courses per trimester. Full-time candidates usually complete the MPM programme in three to four trimesters over two years, taking four courses per trimester. Students should complete the MPM within four years of first enrolling in the programme.
