Master's in International Security
The Master's in International Security is an interdisciplinary programme intended to educate future professionals in the area of peace and war studies. Its aims are to provide students with a comprehensive set of analytical skills, robust training in research methods, and a deep understanding of international conflicts in the 21st century.
The postgraduate programme in International Security combines theory and practice and provides students with both academic rigour and policy relevance. Over 45 modules in international studies are taught every year by leading academics and an international array of distinguished scholars. In addition, students have access to visiting academics, serving officials, government experts and practitioners who give regular public lectures and research seminars at IBEI.
IBEI’s teaching model is organised around lectures, seminars and small tutorials. Modules are capped and candidates are expected to actively participate in the form of presentations, group work and assignment writing. In addition, students are assigned a personal tutor and their progress is monitored throughout the academic year. IBEI also develops transferable skills that students can apply in their future international careers.
The advanced Master's in International Security programme, taught in English, is tailored for individuals considering a high level career in government, private industry or non-governmental international organisations, or those wishing to pursue an academic career. Applicants should have an undergraduate degree in political sciences, international relations, economics or equivalent.
The IBEI career development service facilitates the access of its graduates to internships and vacancies in both public and private organisations. Previous IBEI graduates have pursued careers in state and international institutions, as well as multinational companies, NGOs and third sector organisations.
The Institute enjoys an unrivalled location in the heart of Barcelona, next to Las Ramblas, and within the historic quarter of El Raval. Students enjoy the proximity of academic, social and cultural opportunities as well as the facilities of the Barcelona university system and IBEI's sister institution, the think tank CIDOB.
The course syllabus presents an innovative structure, stimulating continuous learning, with highly-qualified IBEI teaching staff as well as associate faculty from the three universities that jointly offer the degree, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, the Universitat de Barcelona and the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, as well as to other major international academic institutions.
The programme's syllabus (2012-2013) is made up of a combination of core subjects and a wide range of electives that reflect the students' individual interests, comprising at total of 60 ECTS. The Master’s in International Security includes three different types of courses and a final research project:
- Core courses: 22 ECTS credits
- International Security elective courses: A minimum of 12 ECTS credits and a maximum of 28 ECTS credits
- Other electives: A maximum of 16 ECTS credits
- Final research project: 10 ECTS credits
Furthermore and with regard to these subjects, periodically throughout the year, the institute hosts conferences and seminars which are open to Master's students and lecturers. Specifically, there will be seminars with prominent professionals and politicians in the international sphere, allowing them to transmit their experience. There are also conferences, debates and presentations of recent research from scholars of national and international importance.
The curriculum combines relevant coursework with an optional internship, providing graduates with the knowledge and analytical skills demanded by the market for the international security professional, broadly defined.Internships are designed to familiarize students with the activities and challenges surrounding the daily work of the institutions and professionals of international security.

The Professional Development Service provides the following services:
- Internship programme at companies and institutions. The internship programme has been designed with the aim of enriching the quality of the education we offer. Therefore, it is crucial that this education be supplemented with work experience in an international environment.
- Professional seminars. During the Master's course, seminars are offered that focus on providing knowledge linked to skills: public speaking, time management, negotiation and protocol.
- Professional guidance. All Master's students can arrange interviews in order to be able to receive advice about entering the job market with the aim of sending companies the most appropriate CVs, adapted to a particular job.
Master's in International Security (English)
The tuition fee for the programme is € 9,900.
Candidates admitted onto the programme will have to pay a deposit of € 1,000, which will not be refundable in any case. The deadline for paying the deposit will be stated on the acceptance letter.
The rest of the tuition fee, € 8,900, must be paid before 30 September 2012.
