The Master of Urban Design (MUD) degree program is an applied research and design degree for students who complete a bachelor's degree in architecture, planning, landscape, or another related disciplines. A broad and inclusive admissions policy is used to attract a cross-disciplinary group of students pursuing professional and academic opportunities as well as mid-career enhancement, and to meet a growing demand for expertise in urban design in the global urban society. The program is designed to fit the needs of both full-time and part-time students. The MUD program aims to engage the complex issues faced by contemporary towns and cities, which are being transformed by shifting demographics, global capital, information technology, and environmental sustainability. The MUD program is built on the premise that urban design is a fusion of physical design, policy and implementation strategies. It mediates the professional disciplines of architecture, urban planning, landscape architecture, development, and engineering that together shape our urban environment. Thus it constructs collaborations between these specialists and the citizens affected by urban development and redevelopment. The MUD program takes the Charlotte metropolitan region as a laboratory while simultaneously reexamining issues on the national and global scales through an integrated summer travel-design experience abroad. The program is housed in the University’s Center City Building in uptown Charlotte, which is also home to the UNC Charlotte Urban Institute and the School of Architecture’s own City Building Lab, which provides an important contact for students to engage in funded research projects with the faculty and organizations beyond the campus. Students entering the MUD program with a professional degree in architecture can earn IDP credits towards architectural licensure. Curriculum The MUD program requires 36-credits, which can be completed in twelve months (fall-spring-summer) by full time students. Each of the three semesters includes 6-hours of studio and two 3-hour seminar courses. Applicants with no previous design training are required to enroll in an extra 3-credit hour summer Basics course prior to fall enrollment. To accommodate part-time students, courses can be taken in independent 3 and 6-hr increments, but full-time attendance is required for the final summer semester, including the 5-week travel immersion experience. International Study Experience The MUD program includes an integrated 5-week summer international travel-design immersion experience. In recent years, students have traveled to multiple cities in China to study high-density urbanism, historic regeneration, and new town movements. During the summers of 2015 through 2017, students will travel to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to study hyper-density, verticality, infrastructure, and sustainability in urban design - all issues critical to the revitalization and expansion of urban centers. Dual Degree Options For full-time students with a four-year undergraduate degree in architecture, the MUD program also offers dual degrees with the two-year Master of Architecture (MII-track) professional program at UNC Charlotte. This dual degree can normally be completed in three academic years. Opportunities also exist for additional dual degree options with other UNC Charlotte graduate programs in Geography (Community Planning) and in Business Administration (Real Estate). Students enrolled in the three-year Master of Architecture (MI-track) program may also add the MUD degree to their architecture degree at the end of their program with a separate application submitted during the last year of their architecture studies. The enrollment period for these two degrees comprises 4 calendar years with two summer sessions. Students enrolled in the 5th year of the BArch program at UNC Charlotte may also enroll in the 12-month MUD Program through an expedited application process in the spring semester of their fifth year. This allows students to obtain a professional architecture qualification and a post-professional urban design qualification within a two calendar year period. Program Overview The MArch I program is a NAAB-accredited professional degree designed for those who have completed an undergraduate degree in a discipline other than architecture (such as Business, Engineering, Political Science, etc). Students who pursue this academic program range from those who are seeking a career change to those who wanted to pursue a liberal arts undergraduate academic program prior to embarking upon architectural studies. The M.Arch II program is a NAAB-accredited professional degree designed for students who have already completed a four-year undergraduate BA or BS in Architecture. Curriculum Students admitted to the MArch I program complete a full-time, three-plus-year, 96-credit curriculum that begins in the second session of the summer semester. In the first year of the MArch I program, students acquire the fundamentals of visual and spatial design, conceptualization, problem solving, and material and environmental influences. In addition to design studio, students take introductory coursework in architectural history and theory, building technology, and representation. In the second year students join incoming MArch II students to complete a curriculum consisting of a comprehensive architectural design project, which includes an advanced-design studio coupled with courses in contemporary theory, building technology, computational methods, design methodology, and architectural electives. In the third year, students complete a research-driven graduate design studio, and a research or design-based thesis, along with courses in architectural research, professional practice, and additional architectural electives. Students admitted to the MArch II program complete a two-year 60-credit curriculum that begins in the fall semester. The duration of graduate study for MArch II students may vary according to prior preparation and course work in architecture, including the fundamentals of visual and spatial design, conceptualization and problem solving, as well as introductory coursework in architectural history and theory, building technology and representation. In the first year of the MArch II program, students complete a curriculum consisting of a comprehensive architectural design project, and an advanced-design studio coupled with courses in contemporary theory, building technology, computational methods, design methodology, and architectural electives. In the second year, students complete a research-driven graduate design studio, and a research or design-based thesis, along with courses in architectural research, professional practice, and additional architectural electives. Admissions and Prerequisites Students applying to the MII track have already acquired the fundamentals of visual and spatial design, problem solving, conceptualization and introductory coursework in architectural history and theory, building technology, and visual skills. Expected Entry-Level Competencies for MArch.II Candidates include: A minimum of six semesters of architectural design studios; A minimum of two semesters of architectural history and/or theory courses; A minimum of four semesters of building technology courses equivalent to the following School of Architecture courses (ARCH 5301: Material and Assembly Principles, ARCH 5302: Environmental Systems Principles, ARCH 5303: Structural Principles, and ARCH 5304: Structural Systems). If applicants accepted to the MArch II program are found deficient in entry-level competencies, they will be required to enroll in additional course work beyond the required 60 credit hours to complete their degree. To ensure that incoming students are evaluated appropriately, the School of Architecture may request from applicants to the MArch II program the submission of course descriptions and syllabi of architecture courses passed and completed that satisfy the entry-level competencies. Dual Degree Options In addition to the SoA dual degrees in Architecture / Urban Design and in Architecture / Computer Science-Information Technology, students applying to the MArch II may choose to pursue a dual degree in another discipline within the university. The most frequent examples include dual master's degrees in Architecture / Geography (Community Planning) or in Architecture / Business (Real Estate Development). Dual master degrees can be obtained under the guidelines of the Graduate School and by special arrangement between the School of Architecture and another university unit. Students may also elect to study in our 3-year dual masters program with Tongji University in Shanghai, China. This program is designed for MArch degree seeking students who wish to obtain a professional Chinese architecture degree as well as an NAAB accredited Masters. In addition to the standard MArch I or II degree curriculum, students engage an additional year of study in the College of Architecture and Urban Planning (CAUP) at Tongji University, one of the top ranking architectural programs in China. Students engage fall and spring architecture and planning coursework (taught in English) as well as Chinese language seminars. The program also features a summer internship in Shanghai.
