The Master of Business Analytics is an interdisciplinary graduate program that addresses the challenges of dealing with data analytics and business intelligence in the “Big Data” environment. It was developed to meet the needs of today’s businesses and organizations facing intense global competition and constant technological disruptions. The digital revolution empowered by the Internet and computer networking technology during the last several decades has generated unimaginable amounts of data. The volume, velocity, and variety of this data have produced a new set of problems and challenges facing businesses and organizations. The Master of Business Analytics at Iowa State University is a unique, blended program offering both online and face-to-face education. The program draws from several of Iowa State’s leading educational fields in science and technology including Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Statistics, and Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering. This interdisciplinary program offers businesses the opportunity to develop managers who will master analytics in ways that lead to increased profits for their company. The program provides a foundation in data analytics, project management, statistical and predictive modeling, consumer sentiment analysis, knowledge discovery, analytical reporting, segmentation analysis, and data visualization. The program has a customized, capstone team project which allows for focused training in areas such as fraud detection, risk management, text mining, and process improvement. Students begin the 21 month program in the summer with a one-week, on campus business analytics overview course. Students revisit the campus at the midway point, and at the end of the program. The Master of Finance (MFin) degree at Iowa State is designed to prepare students for careers in corporate finance, financial analysis, investing and wealth management, and risk management. Although not a “quant” program, the Iowa State MFin emphasizes more quantitative methods and skills than either an undergraduate finance degree or MBA program. As the field of Finance has become more quantitative, employers are increasingly asking for and valuing hard analytical skills. Among other core finance topics such as financial analysis and valuation, MFin students will learn advanced regression techniques and programming approaches for data analysis, time series analysis and forecasting, use of probability distributions, optimization techniques, modelling of financial and risk variables, simulation techniques, value at risk measurement, and tools for effective risk management. These tools will equip students to effectively analyze and solve problems encountered in today’s rapidly changing financial environment. This program allows undergraduate accounting majors to complete an advanced degree while pursuing the additional hours needed to meet the 150 hour requirement in most states to become a Certified Public Accountant. The Master of Accounting program is designed to meet the needs of accountants in public or private accounting focusing on interpreting and analyzing accounting information for decision-making. This program allows undergraduate accounting majors to complete an advanced degree while pursuing the additional hours needed to meet the 150 hour requirement in most states to become a Certified Public Accountant. Graduates comply with the Iowa Standards for Certification upon passing the Uniform Certified Public Accounting examination. Applicants to the program should have a strong academic record. Requirements for admission will generally be: GPA above a 3.25 (junior/senior GPA will be considered if better than overall) Grades of no worse than a B in all required accounting courses. Completed at least four upper division accounting courses, including Acct 387 Demonstrate strong professional communication skills through the required essays GMAT score of at least 50th percentile* GMAT writing of at least 4.5* Additional factors that will be considered are: Professional work experience including internships Leadership experience Strong references from professional work experience and faculty Convincing rationale for pursuing the degree Our Master of Accounting faculty are respected nationally and have been making a difference as editors and co-editors of the top journals in their areas of expertise.
