At Western Illinois University, graduate study in computer science offers the exciting opportunity to work with faculty in their research in artificial intelligence; architecture, database, graphics, languages, networking, and systems design. You will also be able to access a variety of computer hardware and the best of current software. Our goals for the master’s program in computer science are to offer the knowledge you need to pursue careers in research and commercial environments, and to give you the ability to stay current in our dynamic and rapidly changing discipline. Our graduates have been successful in Ph.D. programs, in industrial research laboratories, in software and hardware design, and in middle and upper-level management for a variety of companies. Requirements If a student requires no remedial computer science coursework, a total of 33 semester hours is required for the master's degree in computer science. There are 18 hours of required core courses in operating systems, databases, artificial intelligence, networks, computer architecture, and computer graphics. The remaining hours are completed by taking depth courses in the same areas, writing a thesis, and/or completing a commercial-oriented project. There are three flexible options for completing your Masters degree in Computer Science at WIU: An all coursework option, a commercial project-oriented option, and a traditional research-based thesis option. In each, you will take courses that stress projects, teamwork, and a fundamental knowledge of computing. Thesis plan The thesis plan requires 27 hours of coursework and six hours of research.
