Program Description This master programme is fully lectured in English and its main goal is to provide technological training with a rather strong professional approach. This master programme is designed for the simultaneous attendance of Portuguese and international students, thus encouraging a real international academic environment. The languages used are Portuguese and English. The purpose of this master programme is to qualify graduates for translation in Portuguese, English and the student’s mother tongue. International students are required to have a bachelor diploma and a proficiency level in both English and Portuguese languages. International students can obtain a B2 level in the Portuguese language through the previous attendance of the 1-year long Portuguese Language and Culture course or the 3-years bachelor programme in Portuguese Language and Portuguese Speaking Countries, both also offered by IPB. Profile of the programme The profile of the programme comprises the development of the technical-scientific knowledge and professional specialized skills in the study areas. Key learning outcomes The degree of "mestre" (master) in Translation is awarded to those students that demonstrate, in this field, the ability to: Consolidate linguistic competence in two foreign languages and apply them to diverse linguistic services in general and translation practice in particular; Enhance linguistic knowledge at the level of terminology, editing, revising, text analysis and production; Integrate technological tools as a support for the translator activity, namely in the fields of localization and audiovisual translation; Emphasize the practical component throughout the whole degree; Link practice to theoretical knowledge and the field of research in Translation Studies; Lead the learners to the necessary mastery to conduct an individual research project and to the exercising of different functions in the context of linguistic services. Occupational profiles of graduates The degree of "mestre" (master) in Translation belongs to the education and training area of Education and Teacher Training. Graduates are specialized to develop a professional activity within the profile of the programme. Access to further studies The degree of "mestre" allows to proceed to 3rd cycle studies (PhD), according to the Portuguese Higher Education System. Examination regulations, assessment and grading Examination and assessment are regulated by the IPB regulations. Level of qualification 2nd Cycle of Studies. EQF level 7. ISCED level 5. Recognition of prior learning Following the implementation of the Bologna Process and the consequent legislation regarding the mobility of students among degrees and higher education institutions, prior learning must be recognized and credited. The prior learning concept comprises all the previous learning/training undertaken in other higher education study cycles in national or international institutions (crediting of certified training), as well as previous professional experience and any post-secondary school training or education. As such, the IPB promotes the crediting of the student’s prior learning when arriving at the institution. 
Aiming at a quick and full integration of the student in his/her new education programme, the recognition procedures must be submitted when enrolling at the IPB.  Qualification requirements and regulations 120 ECTS Credits (30 per semester). 4 Semesters (2 years). 40 Weeks of study per year (20 weeks per semester). 1620 total Hours of study per year; 1 credit corresponds to 27 hours. A variable number of Contact (teaching) Hours, depending on the established schedule for each Course Unit. It includes a scientific dissertation, a project work or a professional traineeship which will be concluded with a final report comprising 33 credits.
Holders of this qualification are entitled to apply to the career of high staff in central and local public administration, as well as in private enterprises and institutions or to undertake their own independent qualified activity. Requirements The holders of a “licenciado” degree or legal equivalent, the holders of a foreign bachelor academic degree, and the holders of a relevant academic, scientific or professional curriculum vitae, may apply to the 2nd cycle of studies, as stated in the description of the Portuguese Higher Education System.
