This two-year program is focused on the exciting research areas of the Earth Atmosphere and the Solar System. The course is given in Kiruna, located well north of the Arctic circle. Kiruna is known for its research infrastructure and provides contact with the various institutions and service providers within atmospheric and space research.During the program's first year, you will gain knowledge of the Earth's atmosphere and the Solar System and observation of these. You will be introduced into the physical processes which are important to describe and understand the atmosphere and the Solar System. Additionally you will be introduced to the technical and mathematical methods used to observe and model these processes.During the second year you will strengthen your knowledge through courses and by participating in various space projects. A large part of the education and work is done as group work in project form. Your master thesis work will be performed at a space technology company, space organization, or an academic department in Kiruna or another part of the world. An unique environment for Atmospheric and Space research has been built up in Kiruna. The Swedish Institute of Space Physics, one of the world's premier space research centers, builds satellite instruments for distant voyages to other planets and celestial bodies. Many international research groups operate instruments for continuous atmospheric observations in Kiruna. Due to the infrastructure, Kiruna often is the base for major international measurement campaigns. From Esrange sounding rockets and giant stratospheric balloons are launched regularly. The experiments are, among other topics related to ozone research as well as studies of the universe's origin. The international organization EISCAT has one of its receiving stations in Kiruna, providing data for studies of meteors and Northern lights.The program utilizes these organizations giving you as a student an opportunity to evaluate satellite measurements, perform balloon flights to the stratosphere and meet active researchers in the field. Guest speakers from the aerospace industry and academia are also common in the education.The lectures are in English.Labour marketThe graduated students have wide and deep competence and are ready to work within various areas, i.e. fundamental space research, atmospheric research, environmental monitoring, space technology and engineering. This course provides the opportunity for an academic career in Atmospheric and Space Science with work opportunities in several Universities and research institutes and organizations all over Europe. Other employers are in the field of environmental monitoring. Some of the major European space players are ESA, EADS/Astrium, and RUAG Space. This two-year program is focused on one of the most exciting and prestigious areas there are: design of spacecraft. This includes integration of complex technical systems that must work in an extreme environment: space. The course is given in Kiruna, located well north of the arctic circle. This “space capital” of Sweden gives you close contact with organizations active in space engineering.A spacecraft, which also is called a satellite if its orbit is bound to a celestial body, is designed around the payload instruments it shall carry and the environment it shall work in. During the first year of the course you acquire knowledge about the space environment, which the spacecraft shall operate in, and also how it travels and orients itself in space. You learn about the various subsystems which make up the spacecraft and how it communicates with the surrounding world. Further, you get an understanding for the specific space electronics that are required and learn how the on-board computers work. You also get an insight into typical payloads that a satellite may carry.The second year you are working with computer design of a spacecraft, fit to carry the instruments that are constructed by you and your colleagues. Here, a large part of the education and work is done in project form and as group work.
