Course structure Staff research interests are diverse, and include: Bayesian statistics; bioinformatics; biometry; ecological statistics; epidemic modelling; medical statistics; nonparametric statistics and semi-parametric modelling; risk and queueing theory; shape statistics. Statistics has strong connections with a number of prestigious research universities such as Texas A&M University, the University of Texas, the University of Otago, the University of Sydney and other research institutions at home and abroad. The research interests of the group are in line with the mainstream of statistics, with emphasis on both theoretical and applied subjects. The group regularly receives research grants. The EPSRC has awarded two major grants, which support the National Centre for Statistical Ecology (NCSE), a joint venture between several institutions. A BBSRC grant supports stochastic modelling in bioscience. Research areas Biometry and ecological statistics Specific interests are in biometry, cluster analysis, stochastic population processes, analysis of discrete data, analysis of quantal assay data, overdispersion, and we enjoy good links within the University, including the School of Biosciences and the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology. A recent major joint research project involves modelling the behaviour of yeast prions and builds upon previous work in this area. We also work in collaboration with many external institutions. Bayesian statistics Current work includes non-parametric Bayes, inference robustness, modelling with non-normal distributions, model uncertainty, variable selection and functional data analysis. Bioinformatics, statistical genetics and medical statistics Research covers bioinformatics (eg DNA microarray data), involving collaboration with the School of Biosciences. Other interests include population genetics, clinical trials and survival analysis. Nonparametric statistics Research focuses on empirical likelihood, high-dimensional data analysis, nonlinear dynamic analysis, semi-parametric modelling, survival analysis, risk insurance, functional data analysis, spatial data analysis, longitudinal data analysis, feature selection and wavelets. One of the principles we are bearing in mind when setting up the Distance program is to keep it as close to the On-Campus program as possible, not only its content and teaching methods, but also the way of assessing students. [+]

Distance Learning Option From the academic year 2014-2015 onwards, the Master of Statistics will be gradually offered as Distance Learning (DL) Program, next to and in parallel with the on-campus program. Enrolling for the DL Program means that as a student you will take the program from a distance, i.e. from home, workplace or virtually any place with access to the internet. Program In 2014-2015 we offer a program of 30 credits with an equal spread over the first and second semester. As can be seen in the table below, you can take three courses in the first semester between September 2014 and January 2015, and 3 courses in the second semester between February and June 2015. One unit (P-LFD) is a project that runs over both semesters, i.e. between September 2014 and June 2015. The on- and off-campus program will be offered in parallel, synchronized as far as practically feasible, and with maximal flexibility. It will be possible to switch between the on-campus and off-campus programs. The content and learning outcomes within and across courses are identical. In 2015-2016 we plan to offer the full-time program (60 credits) for the first year of the Master program in Distance Learning, as well as part of the second year. In practice the study load has proven to be too heavy to combine the full-time program (60 credits) with a job. Combining a parttime program of 30 credits with a (parttime) job is expected to be feasible. Assessment and Examination One of the principles we are bearing in mind when setting up the Distance program is to keep it as close to the On-Campus program as possible, not only its content and teaching methods, but also the way of assessing students. Hence, at this stage of the implementation, examinations will be held for all student on campus. On campus means that we have three universities were the exams will be arranged: University of Hasselt, campus Diepenbeek, satellite university Anton De Kom (ADEKUS) in Paramaribo, Suriname and University of Gondar. This implies that students taking the DL program can choose the destination as close to their home country. We are also trying to make it possible in the future to arrange exams in other universities around the world. Travel and accommodation expenses are to be financed by the student himself, but practical assistance is offered by our administrative offices. There are essentially two options. One option is to participate in all exam sessions, after each semester (January and June), and if necessary, in the re-examination period (mid August - first week of September). If not feasible you could opt for the possibility to take all exams in the August-September period. This latter option however does not allow you to retake any exam within one academic year. Registration Students selected for the DL program will be informed by the university. Their pre-registration will be updated to Distance learning program and a payment request for tuition fee and insurance fee will be sent by email. Only after receipt of the payment of both tuition fee and insurance fee (2 months (January and June, € 40/month) the student will be enrolled in the program. If student needs to travel to Hasselt University for re-sit exams in August an additional €40 insurance fee will have to be paid. Tuition fee The tuition fee for the Distance Learning Program depends on your country of origin: students from Belgium pay a fix fee of €61.90 + €9.30 per credit. A limited number of software packages need to be downloaded: R and LaTeX are available online for free; SAS can be downloaded from the UHasselt intranet (but hence a sufficiently fast internet connection is needed) or you can use the SAS Web Editor. Requirements concerning accredited prior learning As is the case for the On-Campus students, you need to hold at least a university diploma or degree certificate or a diploma of higher education equivalent to a bachelor’s degree (180 ECTS credit points).
