Goals: Training entry-level and experienced social work professionals to practice according to the international standards within multi-cultural global environment on micro, mezzo, and macro levels. Emphasizing global agenda, research, collaborative and experiential learning as aspects of the curriculum. Background: The Master of Social Work Program at ULIM was conceptualized by a consortium of four universities from Moldova and six from the United States. The curriculum was designed specifically for social workers who address needs and problems within the post-Soviet world but with a generalist global applicability. The program has been designed considering the latest pedagogical knowledge and technology combined with experience of an international team of faculty. Launched in 2013, the new program spans two years (four semesters) of basic and advanced graduate-level courses from two concentrations: 1) Social Economic Development, and 2) Disaster, Violence, and Trauma. Students earn the title of “Social Work Expert”, a social worker of the highest ranking who is able to thrive within positions of high responsibility in Moldova and beyond. As an integral part of that training, students conduct internships within established social, governmental, and non-governmental agencies that work within some of the most challenging social environments in the world, addressing poverty, substance abuse, trafficking, pre- and post-Communist values, and much more. Other aspects of the program include an innovative scheduling system that breaks classes into bi-weekly modules; international faculty exchange; co-teaching dyads of Moldovan and American faculty members; Romanian and sometimes English as a language of pedagogy; publications and conference presentations by students and faculty as a pedagogical outcome; and training in grant writing.
