This Master’s specialization focuses on the question how basic social-psychological theories can be applied to solve societal problems, for instance in the context of health, the environment, communication, aggression, and charity. The programme specifically seeks to increase student’s knowledge of social psychology, and train them in (a) translating theory to a thorough analysis of social problems, and (b) developing scientifically grounded interventions. STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAMME In the first semester, students take the following five mandatory courses: Advanced Structural Models [6 EC] Applying Theories to Societal Issues [6 EC] Negotiation [6 EC] Social processes in organisations [6 EC] Applied social psychology [6 EC] In the second semester, students will write their Master thesis (16 EC) and conduct an internship (14 EC). YOUR FUTURE CAREER Students with a Master degree, specialization in social psychology are versatile at the job market. They for instance find employment as coach, mediator, manager, or consultant. In addition, they often work as a policy advisor for a municipality or the government, or they find jobs in professional fields such as communication, education, or journalism. Become the best scientist and scholar that you can be! Our Master programme in Social Psychology takes a multidisciplinary approach to understanding fundamental social psychological processes. The underlying idea is that new insights regarding human behaviour can be understood more completely by incorporating evolutionary, cognitive, and social structural perspectives into the study of diverse social and psychological phenomena. Including self processes, interpersonal relations, and intra- and inter-group phenomena. Social psychology is therefore an important factor in countless situations and settings. STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAMME During the first year, courses focus on basic principles and advanced skills, including methods, statistics, and writing; you will also complete a group-based research project. The second year integrates this knowledge and places it in a broader, multidisciplinary context; you will complete two research projects and write a thesis as the culmination of your Master’s degree. Teaching takes place on a small scale in seminars, workshops, and individual mentorships. Our lecturers are internationally recognized in diverse fields. The programme features special facilities, including a dedicated research laboratory and a workstudy room, and has a truly international character: all teaching is in English, and more than half of our students come from outside the Netherlands. YOUR FUTURE CAREER As a social psychology graduate, you can work in college or university settings, in the private sector as a consultant, researcher, or manager, or in government and non-profit organizations, designing and evaluating policies and programmes in education, conflict resolution, environmental protection, etc. You can also pursue your studies to PhD level. SPECIFIC ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology or a related field and have an appreciable interest in research. You must complete an assignment as part of the admission procedure, which needs to be graded with at least “sufficient” to be admitted to the programme.
