This degree offers two specialisation branches: choral conducting and orchestral conducting. Both of these specialisations are professional in character and are aimed at preparing the future conductor for a wide range of situations. The program trains the student in all the different facets of the conducting profession from the choice of repertoire to the final concert presentation and all the intermediate stages of planning and organisation. The program balances broad theoretical knowledge with hands-on practical experience conducting groups in an academic context (for example in the Conducting Practice class) as well as a more professional environment (Artistic Internship class). At the end of the degree, the students will organise and conduct a joint concert for choir or symphony orchestra depending on the specialisation. Capitalising on Esmuc’s unique position as an academic reference in Barcelona, the capital of a region with a long tradition of choral and orchestral music, the student will have access to multiple professional and semi-professional groups to work with on their personal projects. Objectives The main objective of the Master of Advanced Conducting degree is to provide future conductors with the necessary specialised education. Provide the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge to conduct choral or instrumental groups of various configurations, characteristics and proficiency levels. Expose the student to the western repertoire of both choral and orchestral music and the different aesthetic tendencies. Give the student the tools to project and develop herself professionally using traditional channels and resources as well as those particular of new technologies. Student profile The Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya, as a center for specialised higher education, offers this master’s program to students holding an undergraduate degree in music. Student profiles: Undergraduates in performance or composition with some training in conducting that want to broaden their knowledge or even pursue a career in conducting. Undergraduate conducting majors that wish to professionalise themselves with highly specialised training. Undergraduates in a specific branch of conducting (i.e. choral or orchestral) that want to complete their training with another specialisation. Since the assumed knowledge of all students is that of an undergraduate degree in conducting, in the event that a candidate cannot demonstrate the necessary proficiency in a particular area or skill, the faculty can accept him/her under the condition that he/she take one or more remedial courses at the same institution. Introduction This Master’s program was designed and offered for the first time in the school year 2007–2008 as part of the ECMCT (European Course for Musical Composition and Technologies), the Leonardo da Vinci European project. This project aims to define contents and methodologies at a high level for a post-graduate course based on the latest technologies. This project was developed in collaboration with prestigious European institutions specializing in this field: IRCAM (Paris), Technische Universität (Berlin), Universität der Künste (Berlin), Musikhochschule Hanns Eisler (Karlsruhe and Weimar), Sibelius Academy (Helsinki), Muzyka Centrum Art Society (Krakow), Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre (Tallinn). The current Master’s in Musical Composition with technologies draws on the experience and covers many different technical aspects and specialized programs, as well as concepts and techniques inherent in the creation and structuring of a well elaborated musical discourse. This discourse includes both the aspects of the instrumental writing and the technology. The knowledge acquired in this program converges in the elaboration of a mixed work for instrument and electronics in a free format that could be with instrument and tape or a work which interfaces and/or interacts in real time. Objectives The principal objective of the program is to offer a specialized course for composers or music professionals who want to incorporate the latest technology into their productions. This course will provide the necessary tools in order for the students: To know and to understand how to use the main concepts of computer tools and to apply these to musical production and creation.
