The master addresses European musical culture, from its creations and compositional techniques to the discourse surrounding music that has developed over the centuries and present-day management of musical heritage. The two-year program aims to provide the methodological fundamentals, the analytical skills and the cultural background for higher level musicological research and, more generally, to allow students to competently participate in current discussions of music. In the academic panorama, musical knowledge appears nowadays to be complex and multifaceted: it includes musical texts and theories, art and popular music, compositional tools and conceptions of performance, the impact of media on musical experience, and the functions of music in different social contexts. The Master prepares students for this composite and interdisciplinary knowledge, which is now a fundamental prerequisite for doctoral programs in Europe and America. The skills acquired also provide access to careers in high-level institutions dedicated to conserving and promoting musical resources, and professions that involve transmitting musical culture or conceiving and managing cultural events with musical content. The Department of musicology and cultural heritage, which hosts the program, is part of the University of Pavia, but it is located in Cremona, Claudio Monteverdi’s native city. In 2013 it ranked first for academic production among all Italian departments comparable for size and sector of research. It is made up of distinguished scholars who represent all fields of musicological research and have gained international recognition. A long history of exchanges involving both students and instructors has consolidated the Department’s position within today’s global academic debate. The teaching staff’s areas of specialisation range from historiography to music theory and philology, ethnomusicology and popular music studies, covering the entire chronological span from classical antiquity to the 21st century. Our wide and finely articulated didactic offer guarantees a complete and competitive training. Music students have access to the large Main Library of the School which holds numerous books, journals and recordings relevant to the study of ethnomusicology and world music, as well as the nearby British Library Sound Archive and other London libraries and museums. The SOAS Library holds copies of standard reference works on music, such as the current edition of the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. The Grove dictionary and the RILM database can also be accessed on line from computer terminals in the Library or elsewhere on the SOAS network. Listening facilities are provided in the Library, and most CDs are available on short loan. Among special items in the Department’s collections are: field recordings, films and slides a large working collection of musical instruments from Asia and Africa extensive staff collections relating to specific research interests Performance The Convenor will communicate by email and through meetings with all students taking Performance or Performance as Research, and must be approached for official approval of your choice of performance tradition and teacher. Such approval is signalled by the Convenor’s signature on the Department’s standard “Performance study application form”, available from the Faculty office and online. No lessons should be taken until this form has been signed. The staff member most closely related to your chosen tradition acts as a Sub-convenor and should be your first point of contact for any matters pertaining to the specific tradition you are studying. Convenor and Sub-convenor will liaise as necessary. The Department will not support training in “Western” vocal or instrumental traditions. Subsidy towards the cost of lessons: The Department will pay for approved external tuition, up to a maximum amount agreed at the start of the session (currently £500 for Performance and £300 for Performance as Research). Please be aware that the cost of regular performance lessons might exceed these amounts; any excess must be paid by the student. Claims for reimbursement must be submitted using the standard Music Performance Lesson Reimbursement Form available from the convenor, accompanied by a signed receipt or invoice from the teacher. Claims cannot be accepted after the examination. The student is also responsible for arranging regular lesson times, negotiating lesson fees, and obtaining access to any necessary instrument. Students are free to choose composers from various eras (including the latest) and nationalities for their final examinations and the final project. Access requirements Bachelor of Music degree and professional qualification of an artist. Applicants to the Performing Arts programme must be graduates of bachelor studies belonging to the same or related field. Proof of English Language: applicant has to present document proving B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (TOEFL 87 iBT / 534, IELTS 5.5 or any other document proving B2 level) if the applicant had not received education in English. After admission all students will be tested for English language level at the Institute of Foreign Languages at Vytautas Magnus University. If English level will be below B2 students have to study English to reach B2 level in first two semesters of Master studies. Students have to self-fund English studies.
